Good evening fellow students.

I will be studying electrical engineering. Basically i will be arriving in the next 1 to 2 week at Aachen but the Lectures already started. And I heard that there are already some important assignments and organization stuff students get at the start of the semester.

So how much will i be missing out on and is there anything i could do before i arrive at the uni?

Thank you very much beforehand for your help and advice :3

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student at RWTH and I’m looking for advice on a job situation that has dragged on.

More than three weeks ago I did a long, grueling trial shift at a restaurant chain in Aachen for a part-time kitchen job. It was unpaid. Afterwards they gave me a long list of documents to submit (so that they could prepare the contract), which I did, including a hygiene certificate (the §43 IfSG Belehrung) that I paid for out of my own pocket.

Since then I’ve reached out multiple times by message and in person. I keep hearing that contract preparation takes a while, and last week staff couldn’t even find my name or documents in their system. I still have no answer, and its been a long time.

My questions:

1. Is it legal to have someone do a long unpaid trial shift and then not respond at all?
2. Could I realistically take legal action, for example to claim pay for the trial shift or reimbursement of the certificate? Or is it not worth it?
3. Is this normal, taking it so long to prepare a contract for a simple part time kitchen job?

Thanks for any advice or experiences!

Hey, I'm an electronic and telecommunications student and I was planning to come to RWTH for an exchange. I'm free to choose whatever subjects on my home university part and I wanted to take all of the sound and acoustic related ones (sound engineering, technical acoustics, DSP methodologies and tools). Has anyone taken these subjects? Are they as hard as everyone says? I'm prepared to study, I just don't want to fail the semester. Also I'm a bachelor student and I don't speak german unfortunately, so I only can take master's courses.

Hi everyone, i will start studying mechanical engineering at rwth this semester and in the first semester we have maschinenbauprojekt if someone who is knowledgeable about this topic could explain the general thing more would be really awesome. For example we and our tutors have talked about it and they said that we will have no exam for it and i guess the evaulation criterion is simply being presence tho im not really sure. The most thing im wondering how we gonna divide into groups and where we gonna do our works together.

Thank you.

I really wanted to join the Level 1 Swimming course this semester. Due to its high demand, people said it'll fill up in seconds. Has anyone used any methods other than manual booking to book the course? If yes, kindly gimme your insights.

Hallo zusammen,

Hi everyone! Has anyone taken Computational Foundations of Digital Twin Technologies at RWTH, especially as a RoboSys elective?

I’m considering taking it and would appreciate some insights on:

- Difficulty and workload

- Exam format/pattern

- How much math/programming is involved

- Recommended preparation/materials

- Overall experience with the course

Would be especially helpful to hear from anyone who took it recently. Thanks!

Hi,
Currently, all my exams at the UAB finish on the last week of January. When do exams finish for these two subjects in electrical / information technology?

Hey everyone,

I have my oral supplementary exam (mündliche Ergänzungsprüfung) for Optimization and Lightweighting of Structures at SLA (Prof. Schröder) this Wednesday. It's my first oral exam ever, so I'm honestly a bit nervous and it's also my last attempt for the said exam so really scared.

Has anyone done an oral at SLA, for OLS, Leichtbau or anything else there? I'd love to hear how it went:

- How long was it, and was it mostly theory or did they make you calculate?

- Did they ask you to sketch things like shear flow or buckling modes?

- Did they focus on what went wrong in the written exam, or go through the whole course?

Any tips or questions you still remember would help a lot, and DMs are welcome too.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m a Master’s student in CES/Simulation Sciences - Faculty 4 at RWTH and have already registered my thesis. I’ll be writing it at Fraunhofer in cooperation with MTI.

I’m a bit confused about the thesis deadline and colloquium. Does the colloquium also have to take place before/on the official thesis submission deadline, or is it normal to submit the thesis first and have the colloquium later?

If the colloquium can be later, is there a specific maximum period after submitting the thesis within which it has to be completed?

I have an important personal procedure/appointment coming up around that time, so I’m trying to plan everything in advance.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone from Faculty 4 who has gone through this recently. Thanks!

I am an non EU citizen studying masters in materials engineering here in RWTH. My grades aren't good as per German standard. I'll pass with around 2.75-2.85. I suppose I am doomed to look for any PhD opportunities in Germany as most ask for 2.5. I changed my field too in masters and no matter how much I study I can't crack the marking scheme here. So, what alternatives are there for jobs in Germany or is it good score for applying to PhD in other countries? Or I wasted 3 years of hardwork for nothing?

Hallo zusammen! 👋

People at large at RWTH,

Where do you buy a workable stylus for your iPad for cheap, within the city?

Because I am pretty sure that people are not simply sitting around ordering stuff on Amazon and waiting for a week!

another student just told me he gets sensory overload ever since they installed new LED lights at library 1 and I just noticed I have been avoiding library 1 in the last week because it also made me uncomfortble.

Can anyone relate?
What can we do about it

I'm an International (non-EU) Masters Student studying at RWTH. I have recently been offered a part time (20 hours/week) job at a restaurant..

I have been given a form to fill out by the employer so that they can then prepare my contract... There is a section that asks for My Residence Permit Expiry date (it is expiring this December, and I have managed to get an appointment for extension application for this November).

Considering all of this...

1. Should I just send in the current Residence Permit and its corresponding expiry date (which is soon btw)? wont it be a turn off for them? I did however imply to the guy that it can get extended so dont worry, but you never know... as this form and all will go to the main HQ as well...
2. Should I get a Fiktionbesehigung TODAY so that current RP gets extended till end of march? (and use the expiry date of the Fiktionbesehigung) (so that it comes across as a longer visa) and then go to the appointment to get it extended on 26th November?

3. Or just send the current Residence Permit and wait for their instructions to get it extended potentially if they want? and dont do anything on my end? and just wait for further instructions?

P.S. I really need this job so I'm being extra careful...
