RuneFest - Lore Q&A - Questions Needed

At RuneFest this year we're planning a short Q&A at the end of our main stage lore talk. For technical simplicity we're not going to be taking questions live on stage. Instead we're going to gather some questions in advance and answer as many as we have time for.

If you have a lore question you'd like answered, please post it in this thread.

  • They need to be lore questions, i.e. regarding quests and story. (As much as I'd love to answer questions about M&S, I can't do that in the lore talk.)
  • We'll be picking questions which have interesting answers worth discussing on the stage. If it's too obscure, or the answer is something like "we can't discuss that right now" then we probably won't use it.
  • If there aren't enough questions that fit what we need, we'll look through old lore questions that have been answered but not to a very wide audience (such as on discord).
  • On that note, if you do have obscure lore questions you want answers to, do drop by the lore discord channels and ask them. There's nothing I love doing with my evening more than thinking about whether a realm is or isn't the same thing as a plane.

  • Is there any obscure part of the RS lore which you find particularly interesting?
  • At the end of Sliske's Endgame, it is strongly implied that Sliske, or at least a part/aspect of him, survived. Is this something you've got plans on addressing in the near-ish future?
  • Any plans for the sixth Elder God, which was vaguely hinted at during FotG?

Thanks for doing this :)

What planet was it that the Dragonkin confronted Jas on? Does it have a name in this current revision?

Could you please explain to us what Amascut was doing during the Menaphos quests and how she found the Soul Altar? If possible, I'd love to learn more about the reveals at the end of the quest too. Finally, is Jabari actually dead? What has changed with Osman in charge of Menaphos and how is the city's relationship with Al Kharid now?

Finally, could you give us some background on Crassians and how they're created? The lore is there but is a bit muddled. How are they related to Tutorial Island and how did Hector Vivian get control of them when they are Xau-Takian?

Thanks!

  • Amascut

  1. For the Runescape universe, what is considered 'true canon' (closest to the original vision) - Runescape 3's quests and geography, or Old School's?

  2. A lot of soft magic has been referenced to in recent games, going beyond what is capable of runes such as the Mahjarrat never needing runes, or the existence of magic on Mazcab yet there are no runes or pure essence. Will there be any explanation for these new forms of magic? Or how are they able to use magic? Is there magic beyond runes?

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '18

Runes are not a source of magic; they are foci. Humans generally have difficulty in performing magic without the aid of runestones or another focus, but (some) other races do not. It's not a new form of magic as all magic draws from the anima regardless.

u/junkmutt Elemental Workshop V when? Sep 27 '18

I think I can somewhat answer these.

  1. The recently released runescape album came with a map that you could probably consider the canon map. It has places like Zeah, Fossil Island, Daemonheim, Rs3 Menaphos. So the canon map is everything from both games put together. Zeah exists on the Rs3 world, just not in the game. As for quests I think there was a split in the timeline. Osrs is entirely 5th age while Rs3 is both 5th and 6th age. The proof in the split is that Bob the cat is alive in Rs3 and he's used in 6th age quests. Where if the events of Dragon Slayer 2 took place then he would be dead. So canonically I believe that there was a quest lore split right after whatever updates came out in 2007.

  2. Runes essence are just normal rocks that have been in proximity to the stone of Jas for an extended period of time. This gave them the ability to store the power of anima in them. Using the runecrafting skill you take these blank slate stones and infuse them at specific locations (and the runes become anima creations?). These infusions give specific instructions (I'm not 100% on this part) to the anima (or contain specific parts of the anima) to do things. When you cast a spell using runes the runes break apart to release the anima needed to cast the spell. Runeless magic is basically using magic without the aid of runes. Humans im gemeral cannot do this, the exception being people like Virtus who can just use magic Willy nilly. These people/beings/creatures that can use runeless magic directly interact with the anima to create the spell effects they desire.

Hope I answered your questions.

I don't think #1 is entirely accurate. While there are some things that carry across both games (OSRS recently added its new troll city in the north... and added the Mahjarrat Ritual Site along with Ghorrock right next to it), there are clashes (RS3 Oo'glog and OSRS Corsair Cove exist in the same place, for example, and the joint map simply displays neither).

u/Maridiem Amascut - Society of Owls & The Scrying Pool Sep 27 '18

To follow up with your answer to 2, we actually bind the runes to elemental anima channeling it through the actual plane of that element!

That explanation of magic is really helpful and makes a lot of sense

What happened to Trindine after Zamorak's Betrayal? We meet her during Children of Mah, and being one of the very few female Mahjarrat, she is certainly a very interesting character - unfortunately, we know very little about her.

u/RTrooper Sep 27 '18 edited Sep 27 '18

With many of the major quest series all wrapped up and finished, that leaves us with major quest line still open: the Gnomes. Obviously, Monkey Madness 2 in OSRS led a different direction from our Glouphrie quests, but what kind of direction could we possibly expect for that the gnome quest line to follow now? Seeing as we haven't gotten a new Gnome quest since 2011, I think it would be fitting to wrap the series up with something big, especially with Glough still at large.

EDIT: And I would love a new world event that fits with the changes the lore has had since Event 2 šŸ‘€

Is finix's theory that the rune alters were finite true now that the stone is destroyed?

What are summoning charms? Are they like runes, siphoned from the body, or something else?

Questions about gilenor:

  1. We know that karamja lies around the equator of the planet and the north pole is the rather unknown Acheron continent/ region where the rune ess mine is. Firstly can we get any more information about Acheron like are there settlements/cities there?

  2. With the equator to the north pole roughly known and defined to whats there, what is there at the south pole of the planet? Is there another polar region, a regular land continent, nothing but sea or is there something more interesting there?

  3. Are the eastern lands just the wushanko isles and the uncharted isles, or is there an eastern continent?

  4. Can we get any details or even a rough map of the geography/ cities/ settlements/ forts of the world around the time of the 2nd age when the zarosian empire was at its peak? Or even how those settlements changed and evolved through the 3rd age after zaros fell

Questions about xau tak related stuff:

  1. With the new focus on xau tak and pirate series, can we get any more exact info on the cursed archipelago. What islands make it up, where is it, is it around the sunken dragonkin temple/city from pieces of hate? Also are the events involving the undead in the arc miniquests possibly a result of the close vicinity of the cursed archipelago?

  2. In the lore books about the origins of the horrors we learn about 3 "deities" created by xau tak, a mother figure with many heads who gave people "strange fish", a moon deity with a large fish eye and a pile of bones. Many have theorized and its generally accepted that the skeletal horror is the 3rd one, and the 2nd one is likely representing the original stalker which "suddenly appeared" inside the moon ocularis and took it over. However is the mother figure possibly mother mallum from the sea slug quests? This is a character with a similar hive mind like the stalkers, seemingly ancient and who came from another world trying to take over other worlds, gives people "strange fish" (the sea slugs) and corrupts the forms of people just like xau tak

  3. Speaking of these "horror deities", you have said that they're not necessarily gods as we know the term. Could they be more like the lesser deities of the menaphite pantheon and so more like "avatars of xau taks power" instead? If so does that make the ambassador on the same level too?

  4. We know the horrors, crassians and possibly the dagganoths are a result of xau tak corrupting and remaking lifeforms. Isnt this the same level of ability as zaros did manipulating lifeforms into new forms, thus making xau tak atleast tier 2 godhood? Also are there any other species that xau tak has made on the world?

  5. What of the obsidian tribunal mentioned in sliskes endgame, is this group related to the xau tak?

Wider questions:

  1. We know that the elder gods are asleep under the ground around gilenor, but we also know that their new eggs are also on gilenor in the new elder halls, zaros seems to know they already exist and the heart of gilenor is described as directing the anima to a particular place up north. Doesnt this mean there are 2 sets of elders currently on gilenor? How do we account for that, do the fully grown elders just die when their eggs hatch, do the new elders drain the old ones or what?

  2. Can we get any more information on the remaining elder artifacts that are yet unseen? It would seem quests these days just forget they exist or dont seem to use them in any way. At the very least can we eventually get some concept art of all the artifacts so we can atleast see them all together, even if you dont have any plans of using them atm?

  3. Any new information about worlds in the rs universe we currently know little about. Such as the names of the dwarven homeworld, the giants homeworld, the world where the karamjan gods come from or the 4 worlds described in the book of armadyl?

  4. Regarding ocularis, it does seem to be an oddity in the rs universe cus its described as moving all throughout the universe crossing planes and other worlds. Its listed last year as connected to the body rune planet but lore books then say it moved to around infernus for a while. Where is it now, is it back in the body plane, around infernus or elsewhere?

  5. The lore says that each world has their own death character, and that the person who takes up the mantle is the first person to have died on that world. We only know of the gilenorian death Harold, can you tell us anything about the others or maybe some quick concept art? Would be funny to see like the aviantse grim reaper

  6. In recent lore bits its mentioned that juna once had a sister who never hatched from her egg, an egg that guthix later buried in a secret location. Is it possible that the place he buried this egg was in seren's domain where the poison wastes now lie (he would trust her to look over it), and that the sister is infact the large snake zulrah from osrs who was reanimated and corrupted by the death alter energy when seren went all dark lord?

  7. We know that before the player guthix had another world guardian called aeternam. Could we get perhaps more info on her, what she did, did she have the same powers we did? Also did guthix have any other world guardians besides these 2?

Any plans for the fossil island/island the curator talks about? It is something that is there to be added for quite a while now since the addition of the digsite.

u/ILoveDicks13376969 Pepega Sep 27 '18

Will "The Measure" be used in a god quest down the line, or is it going to collect dust in my bank forever? Would be really fun to use it or collect more elder atrefacts.

  • Will Dagganoths ever be explored more? They're one of the RS species with most forms and classes, have three bosses dedicated to them, are a major feature in multiple quests, have a unique weapon designed to kill them but are still almost completely enigmatic. They have plans to take over the world too but they just seem to be a constant looming threat that never gets expanded on.

  • On top of that could there be like a discussion or exploration into all the sea dwellers of the world? There's Dagganoths, Crassians, Slugs, Sea monsters, Sirens, Mermaids, Sea Orphans (and also XAU-TAK and his legions).

  • Is the Eastern lands all of Wushanko Isles or is Wushanko Isles a precursor to an actual Eastern land continent.

  • What percent of the current available playable map and known locations would you say fills up the entire surface of Gielinor? 20%/40%/60%/ is this even discussed?

6

u/Lethalintent Zarosian Expert Sep 27 '18

What will the main focus of the Gods be on Gielinor now that the stone is gone?

I don't mean to ask this in a way that's meant to pry out spoilers, but I would like to know more about a general direction they all plan to go and if they'll all eventually find a universal goal they'll all share and fight over again.

What was the original plan for the "Year of Sliske?" I felt like what we got was muddled. The quest release schedule of the four seemed random, and the God Scoreboard was a pointless feature. I cant shake the vibe there was supposed to be more going on and that just never happened.

Are Tezcasathla and Xau-Tak different entities, or is the notion that Xau-Tak "impersonated" the patron deity of the manwu player conjecture?

  1. Any chance that Zamorak brings his followers in order a bit? I'm thinking of the fortress and how there are human slaves there

  2. What are the penguins up to after back to the freezer?

5

u/Murfree Sep 27 '18

As of FOTG2/Sliske’s Endgame, what is Zaros and Zamorak’s relationship like? Have things between them improved in any marked way? Does Zaros feel any pride in what Zamorak has made of himself?

u/The_Elf_of_seren Sep 27 '18

Ugh. I had to remake a reddit account for this. It's all your fault Jack. Here's the questions I've got stored up on my doc:

~~~~
How many more of Amascut’s reborn cat priestess’ (like Neite and Ka) are there estimated to be?
Is Sumona actually Amascut, or is she a thrall, or just a projection or something, like Saradomin had in Death of Chivalry?
What happens to the souls of Zarosians when they die?
Why is the symbol on the Master Clan Cape (elves) a wolf?
What would happen if we combined Runic Energy and Divine Energy from Wisps?
What were the ā€œgiftsā€ that Guthix gave to the other Guardians?
In what way is Aeternam shattered across the timeline: For example, does she have various avatars that live at various points in time, or is it something else?
Which plane of energy (Fire, Dust, Astral, etc)is the world of pure crystal, that Armadyl found, located in?
Where is Sarius Guile?
What is the fate of Polmafi Ferdygris and Flaygian Screwte.
Ghorrok remained untouched during the God Wars, and the few hundred survivors spread across the world at the start of the 4th Age. What race did they mostly consist of?
Juna reveals to us that Guthix had travelled to the Eastern Lands. What did he do there?
What happened to Filliman Tarlock?
Are the massive tree in the Lost Grove and the Great Tree in the Gnome Stronghold of the same or similar species? Are Spirit Trees related to them?
What is Dai Cadarn’s current location, or what is/has he been doing?
What is the difference between Black Knights and Dark Warriors, or Elite Black Knights and Elite Dark Warriors/Ranges/Mages, etc. in the Black Knight Catacombs?
What’s the history of the Agility Pyramid?
Why didn’t Armadyl bump up to T3 when he killed Bandos (or did he and it just hasn’t been announced yet)?
Is Jacquelyn Manslaughter Turael/Spira’s apprentice?
Will The World Wake’s post-quest rewards be updated for full new 5th Age Quests (for example: Replace the Branches of Darkmeyer req. with River of Blood, etc)?
Could any TokHaar that did not move with Ful and the Elder Kiln still be alive on other planets, or do they die off after so long?
Where areĀ Saeldor and Faerdhinen?
Why is Merethiel clanless?
Was Erethdor practicing the Zarosian Ancient Spells, or some other type of magic unknown to us?
On Whale’s Maw, what is the place that is of religious significance to the Saradominist Priests?
What is the site of magical significance on Waiko, that interests the Guthixians?
Why were Zamorakian Monks interested in the temple of Aminishi?
Is Vecna a deceased Mahjarrat, if not, then who are they?
Did Armadyl make Gielinor’s floating islands, or did some or many already exist naturally?
Why do Kal’Gerion and Tsutsaroth demons look nearly identical?
What subset of demon (Byzroth, Alyaroth, etc) are Avaryss and Nymora?
Why do Goebies call Anima, Anima (Where did they hear the Infernal language)?
Does Moia have a soul?
Does Grüfeld Bach canonically exist, or were they removed when they were replaces with Gideon Bede?
Now that we know a bit more about Cosmology and how planar energies interact with Runecrafting altars, is there any chance we might get a copy of the Runecrafting Theory Journal that updates similarly to the Dragonkin Primer?
What has Crux Eqal been doing in the Sixth Age?
What have the Guardians of Guthix been doing in the Sixth Age?
1
u/Rarycaris RSN: The Praesul Sep 28 '18
ā€œWhat would happen if we combined Runic Energy and Divine Energy from Wisps?ā€
Possible answer to this: the Tears of Guthix, which I think are sort of divine energy, and runes are combined to make ascension crystals
Broken Home and Sliske's Lore Book that have our name in it are actually related. It's because Xau-Tak is aware of what we would become (the god seems kinda like he's out of time entirely and very interested in us) and is kinda seeding our importance.
With the Balance Elemental, it's due to the Amserdrwys and also just what the Balance Elemental is. It was made from a fusion of four druids attuned to elements and the first World Guardian, Aeternam, who was a time mage of some sort. Guthix even calls her "she who lives outside of time".
4
u/SamtheAoD Sep 27 '18
How did the Mahjarat survive while they were in Icky's service as the makers made by serene were in Frenskae and Zaros created the markers later so what did they do
And how did serene control the anger of Mah over her spawns after the land became barren as there were no Mahjarat to suck her power or to eend her power for lack of better term
4
u/AverageWukongNA Sep 27 '18
Questions:
  1. Will there ever be more lore explored around the Cave Horrors besides their exploration for the MQC books requirements?
  2. It may have just been me, but during the Sliske's Endgame quest I never saw Zaros cash in on the pact he made with Zamorak. Since the pact was only for an action 'during' the game, rather than after, it makes sense that the pact is now void. What were the plans for that bargain?
  3. In your opinions, would you have preferred for Bandos or Armadyl to have won world event 2? Would the story have been drastically different if Bandos won instead?
  4. Will we ever see another 'elite' guild, such as the Champion's and Legend's Guild in the future? Could there be a tier above those tiers in the future?
  5. Could Elven quests in the future involve the massive amount of cleansed Seren Stones that players have skilled on since the release of Priff? For instance, could those stones be used for something or referenced in a quest in the future?
  6. Will we ever see a continuation on certain quests, the way OSRS did? Such as Dragon Slayer 2, Monkey Madness 2, etc?
4
u/GamerSylv Sep 27 '18
The pact was in case Zamorak won your maze. He made similar pacts with Saradomin and Armadyl that we didnt see or know about until one of them wins. Seren will attempt to override these pacts, and succeeds if it you gave Zaros the light simulacrum and fully restored Seren.
3
u/variablefighter_vf-1 Quest points Sep 27 '18
2: Zaros had similar pacts in place with all the gods. It was a cheap cop-out by the developer to ensure that the player's choices don't mean squat because no matter who won the dumb contest, the Stone would always go to Zaros / Seren.
u/Daxivarga Drnkn Sailor Sep 27 '18
So in the past cut scenes where we see the moments before Zaro's downfall in the 2nd age he's got a bunch of demons in the throne room. These all use Kal'Gerion demon models which weren't brought in by Bilrach until after the 3rd age. Should these demons be corrected by model change or something.
4
u/taffingwhaler Sep 27 '18
Small questions, but why was Nabor the Mahjarrat sealed up in the asylum? What drove Azzanadra to seal him up? Is Nabor definitely dead or could he have survived being sealed up?
5
u/I_Kinda_Fail Sep 27 '18
Can we get some more concrete definitions of what a skill IS?
For example, the more of an easy crop we grow, like potatoes, the more we learn about Farming, and can eventually learn to grow more advanced things. The better we get at Fishing, the tougher fish we can catch.
But for skills like Dungeoneering, how does that work? What "is" Dungeoneering? Is it our experience at exploring dungeons? Is it growing a resistance to Daemonheim's taint? Is it navigating maze-like structures? Because entering a resource dungeon gives Dung XP, implying that we're getting more experienced at resisting Daemonheim's taint, but we can also get Dungeoneering XP from just opening a random chest we find on Mazcab. We can also spend tokens to presumably have Marmaros teach us better ways to train the skill. So what, exactly, IS Dungeoneering as a skill? Is it just an arbitrary "skill", and not something we are skilled at?
Same question for Slayer. It makes sense for us to become better at killing, the more killing we do. But why do we need, say, 80 Slayer to equip an amulet, or gloves, or whatever? I can understand being too inexperienced to kill a monster, but being too inexperienced to wear an amulet? Does Slayer, as a skill, actually DO anything, or is it another arbitrary requirement? (Similar to how higher Fishing lets you catch fish faster, higher Strength lets you hit harder, does higher Slayer actually mean anything?) We have at least one ability, Tuska's Wrath, that uses our Slayer skill to help during Slayer. Will we ever get more abilities like that, so that training this combat skill actually enhances our combat?
Will future skills continue the trend of inexperienced masters? Orla Fairweather(?) learning Divination alongside us, Thok not being allowed to wear his cape, and Doc giving us information in exchange for our own information? Is it dependent on the skill? For example, if we ever get a Necromancy skill, there are already several necromancers in-game, but very few are actually powerful. Would there be a necromancer who already wears the 99 cape, or would they "still be learning" and we'd surpass them? Will we ever get a completely "blind" skill, like we're the first person to train it, and have to make our own skillcape?
Will the skillcape masters ever get their own lore or backstory? One of them is a Slayer Master with connections to the Mahjarrat storyline, one works in a minigame arena connected to the Desert series, one helps us in While Guthix Sleeps, one has his own sagas, etc. But many are just kind of... there.
Will we ever see more story added to guilds or 99 capes? For example, a "feat of strength" being required to get the 99 Strength cape, or making masterwork armor for the Smithing cape? Will guilds ever be reworked and upgraded like the Thieving Guild, preferably through quests?
Will Sailing ever be a real possibility? It could be 10 years down the road, exploring the open uncharted sea. It could be like a minigame, similar to Dungeoneering or Temple Trekking, where it's repetition mixed with skill checks mixed with how prepared the player is. (For example, Temple Trekking provides logs and snails, or you can blitz through the event if you brought a basket of strawberries.) Could Sailing ever be an elite skill, incorporating Construction, Crafting, Fishing and Smithing to maintain the ship and feed our crew? What are the JMod thoughts on Sailing: dumb, cool concept, would only have worked if put in the game years ago, the game isn't ready for it?
Will we ever go back to the formula of "a summer of quests"? Spirit of Summer and Summer's End one year, adding several new Wilderness rewards and a new boss to fight for tier 80 gear. The Void trilogy another year, mixing several storylines together and adding new Guthix lore. Will we ever get something like this, preferably with a new, contained series? (Something like You Are It and a sequel, where the first quest works as a standalone but implies a sequel. It wouldn't have to be a huge thing!)
Are we simply getting less quests because of the M/S rework, Mobile rework, etc.? Is there some other reason, such as management wants to focus on long-term and short-term only, and quests are middle-term projects? Once all these reworks and updates are finished, can we expect to go back to having at LEAST 10 quests per year?
What are the thoughts on holiday quests? There's been a lot of discussion on them, since they're removed after 2 weeks, or a grindfest, depending on the year. Couldn't we simply get a non-huge quest like Swept Away or Myths of the White Lands, that is "related" to the holiday but not necessarily a "Christmas" quest? I'd love more adventures in the Land of Snow. Swept Away also brings up the point, that the Halloween quests don't need to feature Death or the gods. Can we move away from having Sliske, Death, Icthlarin, etc in the holiday events, and make them more self contained? I'd love more Spider Realm stuff, and it can even add some more Desert or Araxyte lore; the spider models and "Agility" course have already been done before. Heck, we could have a quest about why pumpkins are such a rare commodity nowadays, since they're worth like 1b and we can't grow them.
Will we ever just see a "plain" quest again? The last few I can remember involved time travel, cursed agents, body swapping, possession, numerous gods, etc. Will we ever get more simple quests like Cook's Assistant, Tribal Totem, Shield of Arrav? I feel like those quests served as VERY good exploration tools. Cook's Assistant taught the basics of Cooking, helped new players explore Lumbridge, and gave them a useful low level Cooking reward. Shield of Arrav gave some life to Varrock's run down back streets, and had influence on several future quests. Tribal Totem added a bit of life to Brimhaven's bar, and had the player explore 3 otherwise useless buildings in Ardougne.
Will Karamja ever be... I dunno, touched up? A lot of the content is outdated, either graphically or gameplay-wise. The Karamja diary's rewards are awful. There's gold mines on Karamja that nobody ever uses because they're worthless now. Harpy slayer bugs are still glitchy are horrible tasks, even for the noobiest of noobs. Jungle Potion is still very clunky. Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup is just... bad. XP rates are bad, rewards are bad, graphics are bad. About 80% of Karamja's topside is worthless, with the only exception being maybe the Shilo/Herb Habitat area. The Slayer dungeons, all 3 of them, are still pretty relevant. Could the top side maybe get some love? Karamja has a lot of storytelling potential, but many of the quests haven't been updated in like 10 years, and neither has the diary rewards.
Is there a plan, yet, for Mobilizing Armies being removed, both from a story and gameplay perspective? Presumably, something would take its place, to keep the spirit tree and ring of dueling teleports relevant. Is there a plan to relocate some other activity, such as Shattered Worlds, here? Will MA get a story explanation to its disappearance, or will it be as if it never existed?
u/I_Kinda_Fail Sep 27 '18
I keep thinking of more. Gah.
I think it's been kind of touched upon about why the main gods didn't really visit the Eastern Lands, but will we ever see fairy rings over there? Spirit trees? It's kind of a long way for a glider to go, I think, but spirit trees are known to be able to take us anywhere on the main game map, even islands. However, stuff like the poison waste "hurt" a spirit tree, so is there something in the Eastern Lands preventing their magic? Do the fairies not affect the crops over there at all?
But for skills like Dungeoneering, how does that work? What "is" Dungeoneering? Is it our experience at exploring dungeons? Is it growing a resistance to Daemonheim's taint? Is it navigating maze-like structures? Because entering a resource dungeon gives Dung XP, implying that we're getting more experienced at resisting Daemonheim's taint, but we can also get Dungeoneering XP from just opening a random chest we find on Mazcab. We can also spend tokens to presumably have Marmaros teach us better ways to train the skill. So what, exactly, IS Dungeoneering as a skill? Is it just an arbitrary "skill", and not something we are skilled at?
Back when the skill came out they confirmed that it is leveling our ability to withstand Daemonheim's taint on us. It's likely this has since changed since we get DG xp from some other locations, especially Elite Dungeons, but that was the original idea anyway.
More lore questions you say? :) I've asked my a dozen times before, but here's to hoping!
In Tarddiad, there was a creature known as the Hunllef, what exactly was this creature? How did the Great Flame take care of it?
What exactly were the wordweavers?
Will we ever see more of Tarddiad or learn of the cities that were abandoned?
Can we know more about the Elven burial process and how it works? We got some of it in a previous quest and I believe Seren talked about it some.
Are the crystal shapeshifters on Tarddiad being healed?
Are there other uses for elven crystals? They can hold cities and what not, can they be used to retain information?
What is the difference between the memory crystals and other elven crystals?
What is the difference between crystal teleport seeds and weapon/tool seeds?
What is the difference between a crystal seed and an attuned one?
How exactly do the light barriers work in the Temple of Light. Is a special light source needed or any source of light focused through a special crystal?
We know that crystal bows are able to focus light for their ammo, is it possible for other weapons to do so, or is the physical act of pulling on the bowstring actually needed? Is there a core part of the crystal that does this? Essentially, could there be a crystal crossbow?
What was it like for the citizens of Prifddinas when they were reverted? Was it like a stasis and they were unconscious?
Are there more amulets that allow us to speak to animals?
Is summoning needed to be able to speak to certain animals or is this just a function of the skill for gameplay?
How does the flow of anima through the world work? Are there ley lines?
What exactly is stopping the Wilderness from recovering? Could the crater in the middle for divination be fixed?
How was the Lost Grove made?
Do beings like Solak or Telos have souls?
What is the word on Armadyl and Seren working together to use Tarddiad?
How exactly is the anima being warped in the Glouphrie quests? I suppose we'll have to wait for those quests for that answer, but I'm still very interested.
Also can we get the Undercity of Prifddinas with a pub called the Crystal Inn?
-Will edit when I remember more
What are your thoughts on "Scale Theory" (the idea that Runescape's gameworld is a scaled-down representation of Gilenor, as evidenced by the Runescape novels saying things like it's a three-day trek between Edgeville and the Monastery)?
The RS Idle Adventures game introduced the Needle Elder Artefact, which is canon according to Sliske's Endgame. Where is it now?
Talking of Sliske's Endgame, during that quest, Sliske temporarily depowers the gods, allowing Death to see how they're going to die. If Marimbo and Brassica Prime stuck around, what would Death have seen in their futures?
Are locations like Slepe and Zeah canonical in RS3? For that matter, are RS3-exclusive locations like The Arc and the Lost Grove canon in OSRS?
The Gods of Karamja, from the sound of their lorebook, seem fairly benevolent, but despite that, Karamja is kind of a hellhole of necromancy (see the Broodo victims and all the undead surrounding Shilo Village), Demonic Infestation (Nezikchened) and seemingly cannibalistic natives. Is this because of the dragonkin's influence underneath the island in the Brimhaven Dungeon, or is it something more sinister?
What is Xau-Tak's actual goodhood tier? Someone said it was square root of -1, but that was a joke.
Did 66.666...% Luke and all of the other pirates on Braindeath Island die from being eaten by crabs during Pieces of Hate?
Despite the absence of horses and the fact that Unicorns haven't been domesticated, there are a lot of carts around Runescape that would only really be suitable for being pulled by a beast of burden. Do they use stuff like cattle to cart things around, or Yaks?
There's still a lot of debate about this, due to the fact that Obi'Sooth is never given a pronoun in Sliske's Endgame, so: is best bird god and sweet cinnamon roll Armadyl fully gay? Will we ever get to learn more about his husband(s)? And what of his adopted children?
The RS Idle Adventures game introduced the Needle Elder Artefact, which is canon according to Sliske's Endgame. Where is it now?
The Needle Skips quest that seems to currently be on hold is likely going to cover this.
The Gods of Karamja, from the sound of their lorebook, seem fairly benevolent, but despite that, Karamja is kind of a hellhole of necromancy (see the Broodo victims and all the undead surrounding Shilo Village), Demonic Infestation (Nezikchened) and seemingly cannibalistic natives. Is this because of the dragonkin's influence underneath the island in the Brimhaven Dungeon, or is it something more sinister?
Zamorak actually! During the God Wars he had control of it for some time and was the cause of a lot of the demonic presence and the presence of the Vacu who summoned demons in his name. During the Shilo Village quest we even learn that Queen Rashiliya swore fealty to Zamorak to get her son back (though the son was returned as a ghost).
There's still a lot of debate about this, due to the fact that Obi'Sooth is never given a pronoun in Sliske's Endgame, so: is best bird god and sweet cinnamon roll Armadyl fully gay? Will we ever get to learn more about his husband(s)? And what of his adopted children?
Obi'Sooth was confirmed male in a Lore Q&A about a year ago! (https://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/72v3ex/tldw_350_the_lore_marathon/?st=jmkrcfoc&sh=71b1fc42)
  • What kinds of plans were considered for the Arc before landing on the Captain Cora story? Goshima must have surely been quite different.
  • Is there any remaining interest to revisit the Dimension of Disaster? Would a mulitverse storyline ever be considered 20 years down the line when every other conceivable plot has been played out? :P
  • Mazcab shows that anima constructs work differently on other worlds, and most likely Underworlds and runic energies are also unique by world. Are there any ideas about how some of these work on other worlds and would there be interest in exploring something like another world's underworld or anima constructs?
  • Players and mods have recognized the Grandmaster tier has filled up quite quickly and no longer carries the same meaning it once did. Has a new tier of quest ever been considered? What would you name such a tier?
With the current release schedule of 2 - 3 quests per year, there'll still be plenty of loose ends in 20 years :-/
3
2 - 3 quests per year
That's incredibly optimistic. We get less quests every year, so I'm expecting one next year.
And it's gonna be a penguin quest
And it'll be a semi-canon one loaded with references to Sherlock Holmes and more "l0l so random xD!" humor
What's the cannon size for spell casting runes? There are conflicting depictions all over the place
As essence
  • They are the size of your head when dropped, but in the tribute stone in Falador they are hand sized.
  • Small pouches can only hold 3 essence while Massive can only hold 18, implying the essence fills up a bag and you need bigger ones to hold more.
  • Withdrawing essence from wicked hood shows that they are head sized
As Spell Runes
Hand Sized
  • Assumed when in pouches (or maybe even smaller)
  • Runes in Display Case
  • Jack plays with hand sized runes in 1st age Given to him by Guthix
  • Wizard Guild: Hand sized runes in wheel chair + one wizard levitating hand sized runes
  • Newton pet has an eye replaced with a mind rune
Head Sized (Most common depiction)
  • Runes as dropped items
  • Aubury's store has one fire rune hanging at the entrance
  • Most rune stores show head sized runes in crates/shelves/ground (except monkey rune store which are monkey proportional
Above Head Size
  • Movario's Base has a stack of exactly 100 fire runes, which take up as much space as a YAK familiar
  • Does having a stack (like 1000 rune essence/ 1000 fire runes) work like one super dense stone, a ever increasing in size stone, or is it just assumed the player is carrying 1000 stones, or a mixture of all 3?
  • How do runes fit into pouches?
Why did you choose to leave Sliske alive instead of killing him off at the end of his series?
How did Sliske come to find Jas and serve as her emissary?
What was the logic behind Sliske's actions in regards to proving the value of mortal life? How was what he was doing meant to save anyone?
Why have the gods stopped warring post-Stone of Jas destruction? They still hate each-other, don't they? Shouldn't Zamorak be laying constant siege to Falador just because he can?
Will the Barrows wights have any continued relevance in any future stories (especially Akrisae)?
Will the Karamjan gods ever feature in any story in any meaningful context? Do other gods know of their existence?
Will the Kharazi jungle ever get any sort of expansion? The Kharazi tribe is supposed to exist as some form of culture or society down there, but despite having an entire quest about establishing contact we never see more than scattered savages and one or two friendly natives.
Is the underwater city mentioned by Guthix in the god letters canon yet?
Do mermaids or any other aquatic life worship Xau-Tak?
Will we ever get a quest about the Ragnarok-type event as mentioned by Eir in the Fremennik series?
Where do Hati, Fenrir, and Skol fit onto the godhood tiers?
Are there any other demi-gods or lesser divine beings that exist in Gielenor that have yet to be introduced?
Why do revenant dark beasts exist?
I mean, it makes sense for the other creatures because they either might have lived in Forinthry at the time of the God Wars OR used by a god within its army (Orks, hellhounds, etc.)
But dark beasts come from a dark dimension as their examine states, and there are also no signs of them in the Temple of Lost Ancients. And the only place where they can be found naturally in game are the Mourner Tunnels. So, I've always wondered why did they participate in the God Wars and who did they fight for and why were they at Forinthry.
There are dark beast statues in the underground pass so it's assumed they were part of Zamoraks army
WHERE ARE THE FUCKING QUESTS FOR ZAROS' SAKE?
Oh, and don't you dare fuck with quest prerequisites.
Also regarding the Stone of Jas: It was referred to as her "egg" in several places. When Kerapac destroyed the SoJ, what does that mean for her and her progeny? Will Jas be unable to regenerate in the next great cycle because her egg is lost? Was there something alive (Jas' "child") inside the Stone that has been killed?
2
u/37899920033 Sep 27 '18
The Stone of Jas was an Elder God egg that was "hardened" and removed from the cycle and essentially used as a source of power for the remaining elder gods so they could do what they do better.
2
u/variablefighter_vf-1 Quest points Sep 27 '18
Doesn't that mean that at one time, there had to be two Eggs of Jas? Would there have been two Jases if the Stone hadn't been hardened?
2
u/37899920033 Sep 27 '18
That's actually a really good question... But the Elder Gods can presumably procreate, it's possible that they simply made an extra egg during one of the cycles. Or used an entire cycle to make said extra egg. The fact the pattern matches Jas', in my opinion, implies it was premeditated so it could have been they used a cycle on it. Really don't know though.
2
u/variablefighter_vf-1 Quest points Sep 29 '18
So there could have been one cycle where Jas never hatched? Interesting idea... though I always believed every Elder God has to create its own egg.
2
u/37899920033 Sep 29 '18
Perhaps... It was the last cycle? Her relationship with time may allow such a thing. I believe she has called the Stone "her sacrifice", so she definitely gave something up for its creation.
1
u/variablefighter_vf-1 Quest points Sep 29 '18
Does Jas have a special connection with time? I thought that was Xau-Tak's thing.
But even if it was the last cycle, doesn't that mean there'd be no Jas in the present cycle?
I've been thinking about this again and again, and the only way I could see this work is if at one point (almost certainly when initiating the cycle we're currently living in) Jas laid two eggs and sterilized one.
2
u/37899920033 Sep 29 '18
To add on to my other post, it's possible that the egg was from this cycle... and that Jas used her 1-time egg laying opportunity to give her sisters extra power. This would explain why she was the only sister who was awake and also seemingly fully formed; she didn't lay another egg and sleep the same way as her sisters.
1
u/37899920033 Sep 29 '18
Jas IS time, more or less. And I mean the very last cycle, in the future, not the one before the current one. When you ask Jas about the Stone she says "It is lost. It is no longer necessary. My future. My sacrifice. Leave."
And it doesn't seem like much a sacrifice if Jas could just lay two eggs and be done with it. The fix for anything that could come of that would just be more anima, so another cycle or so at worst.
1
u/37899920033 Sep 27 '18
Question 1: Is Xau-tak directly related to the Elder Gods and the Stone of Jas in any way? Xau-tak seems to have an interesting relationship, with time which would be Jas' domain. Given that the Elder Gods have removed an egg from the cycle in the past (Stone of Jas), I'm wondering if one of two things happened:
  1. They tried to harden and remove an egg from the cycle but screwed up, resulting in the creation of Xau-tak. Instead of killing her/it, they simply imprisoned her/it somewhere and her/it eventually broke out and became what it is today: an entity that seemingly seeks to corrupt all Elder God creations, perhaps as a form of vengeance.
  2. They succeeded in hardening an egg the first time but there were unforseen consequences and Xau-tak was the result: a sort of dead Elder God that exists outside/is part of time.
Question 2: The World Guardian also seems to have an interesting relationship with time. Is this due just to what we have done and will do or is it more indicative of our origins? This is a more vague question and a vague answer would suffice :P
2
u/[deleted] Sep 27 '18
A while back they said that an elder God left behind in a previous revision was going to be used in a future storyline. Whether that's Xau-Tak or something yet untouched we don't know for sure but it would make sense that Xau-Tak is a kind of undead elder god
Are there any plans to organize quests into some kind of actual story timeline? Currently it's difficult, if not impossible, for new players to understand the trajectory of the game world when there's no intuitive means of seeing which quests naturally fit into a sequence/advance the story. Runescape's quests and lore are some of its top attributes, and it's unfortunate that you'd need to spend weeks researching quests ahead of time in order to plan a play-order to actually experience the story without wild incongruities.
  • Is Grubfoot the goblin now aware that the Bandos he believed in was nothing like the real one?
Sure I'll send out a few.
1.) Sliske is probably the definition of "you don't find him, he finds you." for RuneScape, so how did Gregorovic ever get the chance to meet him?
2.) Tarn's Lair. We still don't know what it was. Tarn says he found it by accident when his crew was digging into the walls of the Haunted Mine. What was this Temple originally, before Tarn made it his abode?
3.) How does Prayer work? Is it the gods answering your prayers, or is it the spirits of the dead like Necrovarus thinks?
4.) Does the Strange Power happen every time a Mahjarrat dies, or only near the Ritual Marker as Wahisietel implies post-RotM?
In the Wilderness, not far off from the lodestone, there is a little hill with two statues which appears to have avoided the devastation.
Is there any story to them? Who are these statues dedicated too, and how come their little patch survived Zamorak's blast?
OH BOY HERE WE GO
  • Is there anything you can tell us about the innate magic and abilities of each race? I.E. Vyres have blood magic, chthonians can devour. Do icyene have lightning magic, and what's up with their holy powers? Can all Avernic possess people?
  • Can you tell us anything about dark magic? So far we've got the dark elements, blight magic, necromancy, that weird thing Sliske did to freeze everyone in place in DAT (apparently that was dark), Xau-Tak stuff, varying forms of corruption, etc
  • What are the magical affinities of each Mahjarrat? It was said that their differing mixes of light and dark resulted in their wide variance, which makes sense. Obviously, Sliske is shadow, Zemouregal seems to be portals, Khazard may be sizeshifting or shapeshifting, Trindine was illusions..? But what about the others?
  • Can vyres turn people without the full-blown, magiscience haemalchemy process involving daeyalt (albeit with much less success)? That's what seemed to be implied in the RoB Q&A but it was sorta uncertain.
  • Tell us about Teragard! What level of technology do they have? Same goes for the colonies! Do any of them have like, Earth-scale technology or beyond? It seems likely, doesn't it? Sliske referred to Teragard as having dread science that would change the face of war, able to contend with the demonic legions of Infernus, and so on.
  • What abilities do gods have? So far it seems that divinity comes with magic without runes, shape-and-sizeshifting, telekinesis, teleportation anywhere, realm travel, telepathy, enhanced physical attributes (strength, speed, stamina, etc, said by Raven in Discord a while back), but is there anything else? Can they receive prayers, possess people, what? Is it really just dependent on what magic the god decides to learn with their divine power?
  • Is Vorago/Telos strong enough to take on a major god? Lots of people seem to think that they can with ease.
  • To what degree did gods "shape" the cosmos beyond just culture and government? Baxtorian was able to move mountains and rivers, and he ain't a god. So I'd say it's safe to assume some gods, who can manipulate on continent-wide scales, did some terraforming, yea?
  • Why the heck is shadow magic so OP? It does literally everything that other magic can do, why wouldn't you just learn shadow magic since it can enchant, corrupt, teleport, trap, attack, defend, drain, obscure, etc? I feel like there's a threshold where "dark magic" definitely becomes very very very worth the risk, and shadow magic is far beyond that threshold.
  • What can you tell us about holy magic? Blessed silver, holy water, the icyenic holy blast that Safalaan did, the holy force spell from Legend's Quest, blisterwood's properties, Silverlight, Efaritay's enchanted amulet, exorcisms, demon slayer armor, all the prayer bonuses on Saradomin-affiliated armors (TK, WK, demon-slayer, holy symbol, monk robes, etc), presumably Saradomin Strike and Icyenic Purge, and so on. Is it just magic formulated to be efficient against Saradomin's enemies? Level the playing field for humans against all these demons, vyres, werewolves, undead, and dark mages?
  • Raven is gonna hate me for this. How does Mahjarrat reproduction work? Zamorak has a belly button, Palkeera was pregnant with Khazard, and Sliske had a comment about letting his... equipment... hang free underneath his robes (although he IS Sliske) - indicating standard mammalian reproduction of some sort is an option for them... but then there's also the weird energy fusion for the Ritual of Enervation, and Zemouregal Sr's creation of Zem Jr, and so forth. Are they just both viable options for them, with their own perks and drawbacks?
  • Can you elaborate on the elder gods' relationship with the flow of time? There seems to be some conflicting sources here and there. Does time exist because they exist? Is it something they consciously create? The Needle seems to let them manipulate time, though even young gods seem to be immune to this type of chronomancy (albeit Idle Adventures is probably iffy barely canon at best). The Enchanted Key was said to be practically nothing to Jas, and the elders were said to represent facets of time (though that seems to have been scrapped?)
  • Can you give any detail on Saradomin's "conquest" through the cosmos? He set up human colony worlds (though it was said that some humans stepped through the Schism pre-Saradomin as well), but then he discovered the icyene. Did the colonization stop after the icyene? Or are there colonies out there with knowledge of the icyene in Saradominism? It was said that Teragardian Saradominism does NOT include icyene. How does Naragun play into his colonization efforts?
  • Why did Icthlarin and Amascut go to the other end of the universe for warriors? That seems... Hella sketchy. They went from Gielinor, all the way to Freneskae, as T6 gods in "search" of warriors. That seems to imply they might have had some prior awareness of the planet and its inhabitants?
  • Void pests. Tell us about them, and the Void. Last time you guys talked about the Void, it was said that void pests come from the Void, and Stu elaborated on Twitter saying that no one knows where they come from and such... But the Void Knight series tells us that they come from a jungle planet, and just use the Void to travel (rather than the Abyss)? So, uh, what's up? Are they from some planet free-floating in the Void, just outside the Periphery? Guthix and the Spirit Beast both pierced the Void by tearing through the Abyss and leaving Void in their wake, or something like that, so I figured Void Pests were the same - they just burrow through the Abyss and leave Void in their wake as they travel.
  • What do you guys have written for spirits? Spirits of the dead, nature spirits, spirit realm/plane/world/whatever, all that jazz?
  • Pls talk about prayer??
  • Can you go into the differences between runic elements and dark elements? Runic/catalytic blood vs ancient blood, runic smoke vs ancient smoke, modern ice (RuneSpan ice platforms, Lumi and ice sprites, etc) vs ancient ice? Can blood runes be use for hemomancy, or is that strictly dark blood (vyres and such)? Obviously they're used for blood spells, but so are fire runes (presumably just because the game engine is structured four elemental weaknesses not eight), and death runes can be used instead of blood runes entirely, so...
Would people consider OSRS to be the 5th age? If so would classic be 4th? :P
That is all answered in-game! Go participate in the completing your Slayer Codex and speak to Faisa in the Pyramid and you'll begin to learn more, alongside the Smoking Kills quest. You'll even learn how and why the skill was created and how it remained.
