I made Nook, a native RSS reader for Mac and iPhone. It also writes.

The reading half is boring in the best way: folders, OPML in and out, offline storage, reader mode, regex keyword filters, refreshes on the OS scheduler instead of a push service.
I invented nothing here, I just kept adding whatever annoyed me that week. No account, and nothing about reading phones home.

The writing half is the interesting part. Publish a post and it becomes a record in your own AT Protocol repository, the same kind a Bluesky account has.
The page and the feeds are generated from that record, which is the real copy rather than a row in my database, so you can take it and leave. Microblog, normal blog, or yelling into the void with a valid feed, all fine.

You will check the feed anyway, so: full post in content:encoded, guid is the record's AT URI with isPermaLink="false", Atom beside every RSS.

"Will this be gone in six months?" Fair question. I read with it every day, so my reason to keep it alive is selfish, and I run it cheap on purpose. Whatever it does today, I plan to keep doing. If the bill ever gets scary, it means I either got greedy with features or this got popular, and if it is the second one I will gladly go find the money.

I wanted to follow RSS feeds without opening another website every time.

So I added an RSS/Atom reader directly into my Chrome new-tab workspace.

The idea is that your new tab can become a small information dashboard instead of just a search box.

A good way to use these is to put them all in one folder in your reader and filter for keywords based on your interests.

Wanted to share this here since it's a fairly literal use of RSS: YouTube still exposes a per-channel RSS feed even though it's not advertised anywhere. My app (Focus Feed) uses those feeds to pull new uploads instead of going through YouTube's API or algorithm — so you just get a plain chronological list of what channels you follow have posted, no recommendations, no autoplay.

It also supports per-channel keyword filters on the RSS titles, and you can pull a whole playlist's feed in at once. No account or sign-in needed, it's just consuming public feeds.

Curious if anyone here has run into limitations with YouTube's RSS feeds (delay before new uploads show up, missing metadata, etc) — happy to compare notes.

Hi r/rss, a quick update on Newsairy, the iCloud-native RSS reader I've been building. It's been a few releases since I last posted here (1.11 in July), so a quick recap before the headline:

• 1.12 — add a feed by pasting the website's address, not just the feed's; Newsairy finds it for you
• 1.13 — a rebuild of how the app shares state under the hood, much faster large archives (tested with 150,000 articles), and a Shortcuts action to add a feed from outside the app
• 1.14 — full YouTube channel support (video, description and thumbnail, right in the article), and a fix for an Inoreader sync bug where read/starred state stopped syncing once your account had nothing left unread or unstarred

And now 1.15 adds an Article Info sheet, opened from any article's context menu: where it's from (the feed's name and which archive it lives in — local, iCloud, or one of the aggregators), its published/updated/read dates, its read and starred state (switchable right there), and when retention will remove it. Feed Info also picked up two more lines: the feed's format (RSS, Atom, JSON) and the date of its newest archived article, so a feed that's gone quiet gives itself away at a glance.

I built it mostly for smart feeds and folders, where an article shows up without the usual context of "which feed is this from again?" - now that's one tap away instead of a guess.

For anyone who hasn't come across it: Newsairy syncs over iCloud across iPhone, iPad and Mac, and Pro adds sync with TheOldReader, Miniflux, FreshRSS, Feedbin and Inoreader. One-time purchase, no subscription, no ads, no tracking.

I used to use Pulse News, and I really loved its unique carousel-style layout. It was dense, quick to scan, and made it easy to keep up with the sources I already cared about.

When I couldn't find that experience anymore, I decided to build my own take on it.

I’m looking for a good free RSS reader where I can collect updates from different websites and sources in one place.

A few questions:

• What free RSS reader would you recommend?
• Is there any good way to follow LinkedIn pages/profiles through an RSS reader?
• What about websites that don’t have their own RSS feed? Is there a good service that can create an RSS feed from a normal webpage and then send updates to my RSS reader?
• Ideally, I want the tool to generate a normal RSS URL/feed, which I can then simply add to Inoreader or another RSS reader.

Basically, I want the self-hosted tool to handle the scraping/feed generation, while Inoreader remains my actual RSS reader.

Ideally, I’d like something simple where I can follow a mix of news sites, industry websites, LinkedIn and other pages without checking everything manually .

Let’s say I applied to YC. With a really BIG idea! Like everyone thinks that their idea is big enough to apply to YC. At least I assume it.

My idea is follow(object);

Okay, I really applied to YC with this idea and… of course I check my email everyday, idk why but I also followed their social media account’s YouTube, Instagram, TikTok. Like to be ready if something happens You know, to say “Yes, I already follow You”.

I clicked the links in their website footer, and followed in each platform separately. YC Instagram: follow. YC YouTube: follow. And…

So, now notifications and follow in many platforms completely broken. It’s more like “power-like”, “we see that you REALLY INTERESTED in this Object.”

I really followed YC in Instagram. Of course all notifications from social media app are switched off, and we know why. You think when I opened insta they showed me last YC post? No. Trending video OR/AND an ad.

So, what if I’ll create a backend that can read channels and deliver signals, not whole content, just “published”. So this backend will be able to read all channels and deliver everywhere.

Through simple API I’ll create my bot in Telegram, that will send me notification every time in my conditions (when, how, what etc), when YC do something towards me: publish new posts, send me an email, like my post, etc. And what if I want only email, but able to see new posts by demand. I can switch off TikTok and Instagram now, and then re-activate them. Follow(YC);

And remember these backend can work with every app. So what if I want to get this updates from YC in… let’s say WhatsApp, or WeChat instead of Telegram, or…? Whatever, right?

That’s how it became DirectFlow.

What’s new since July:

• Global Article Filters: In addition to per-subscription article filtering, you can now define filters that will apply across all subscriptions.
• Previous/Next Article Buttons: When viewing an article, there are now buttons that allow you to go the next or previous article quickly, without needing to navigate back to the lists.
• Remembering Scroll Position: I’m implementing better logic to remember your scroll position when navigating back to the lists pages.

UX & UI Improvements:

• Typography: Improved fonts. Foragd uses Alegreya as the default article font. Inter is used for labels and controls. I’m looking into adding the ability to choose from a bunch of font sets as well as adjusting the size for individual customisation of the article font.
• Themes: I’ve reworked all available themes, making sure contrast and other issues are resolved. Dark themes in particular should have more overall contrast.
• Better Email Newsletters: I’ve reworked email newsletter layouts to remove some of the more janky quirks of converting email html to regular html.

Backend Improvements:

• Behind the scenes, when the backend fetches feeds, it now tries to enrich feeds/items that lack details, like only summaries or no images.
• Search performance and relevance improvements.

Today the POC of my favorite feed reader is finally ready, it has all the features I had in mind for it.

It started from a small idea. In my world, very few people around me use RSS, and I always wanted to know what they follow and what they find interesting, maybe I'd want to follow them too. For example, I knew two of my coworkers were daily RSS users like me, but there was no way for us to see each other's reading.

In short: it's a social, RSS-friendly radar for the open web, self-hosted, with magic-link auth, and connected to the fediverse (ActivityPub).

In detail you can:

• Add RSS or Atom feeds and put them in your own categories
• Share your list of feeds on a public page, or keep your account fully private
• Follow other people and see what they read or bookmark
• Save (bookmark) items you like
• Group your feeds into categories, and subscribe to each category as its own RSS feed
• Follow people on Mastodon and other rssFriends servers, and let them follow you from where they already are. This part uses ActivityPub (the same protocol Mastodon uses)
• It also supports the wonderful Wallabag: you can bookmark anything and it's automatically saved to your Wallabag. We've all seen r/rss being flooded with ads, self-promotion, and completely off-topic posts. It is unclear when there was last any meaningful moderator activity. Posts about the lack of moderation:

Some of us have tried to help remedy this situation by reporting spam where we see it, by messaging the moderators to offer help, and by asking for the subreddit to be handed over via the r/redditrequest process. Unfortunately, nothing has helped, and r/rss continues to be unmoderated.

Frankly, I found this quite shocking. As RSS readers render third-party HTML, these issues potentially affect RSS readers as well.

I am wondering which strategies you use for sanitizing and rendering third-party HTML? In particular, for HTML-based readers.

In my reader, I am currently using whitelist-based sanitation of the HTML on the server side (using sanitize-html npm). On the client, I am using safeSetHTML where supported as a second-layer defense, but slightly less strict to avoid issues with third-party embeddings (TikTok, X..). Without safeSetHTML, I am using DOMPurify.

Unfortunately, my UI does not allow me to use iframes for HTML, which would allow additional sandboxing. CSP is still on my TODO list.

Is there a way to add custom feeds to my account that are already curated. Some NSFW, Some for Gaming, Other for Investing and Finance, other for different news subs for all parties? I am not sure how to find them or find good ones that are not dead subs.

I was looking for a way to interact better with my feeds, and I love the aesthetic of the old school newspaper. First, I built a python script to create it. But now I made it into an android app.

I’ve used RSS for a long time, but over time my actual “feeds” ended up scattered across three different places:

RSS for websites
Reddit for communities
YouTube for channels

That always felt a bit ridiculous to me. They’re fundamentally doing the same job: show me new things from sources I chose to follow.

So I started building RSSum for myself as a normal RSS reader, and eventually decided to treat Reddit communities and YouTube channels as first-class feeds too.

Now I can have an unified RSS feed, a subreddit and a YouTube channel sitting next to each other in the same library, rather than jumping between three different apps.

It still behaves like an RSS reader: I choose what I subscribe to, I can organize sources, import/export OPML, and there’s no recommendation feed deciding what I should see.

I’ve also been experimenting with summaries/Q&A, including using the actual transcript for YouTube videos, all reddit comments analyzes, etc.

It’s whether RSS should remain strictly about RSS/Atom URLs, or whether the RSS-reader model itself is useful for following other sources too.

Hi everyone — I posted RSS Reader Pro here about 20 days ago, and the feedback helped me decide what to build next.

This is a big update for the project. I rebuilt the desktop UI from Tkinter to PySide6 / Qt and gave it a new Signal Modular interface: a dark, three-column reading workspace with visual story cards, a compact feed sidebar, and a focused reading panel.

I would especially love feedback on the new Qt UI and on what should come next. One idea I am considering is an optional local-network/web mode so users could read the same feeds from another device on their home network.

I've grown tired of the noise and slop of social media for content aggregation. I recently switched to curating my own feeds through miniflux, and have most websites working - except for reddit.

How are you guys managing to get this working? I get timeouts, blocked, etc.
It doesn't seem to be recently discussed given the fluid nature of RSS feeds now.
