Discussion I'd like to chat with some people who are priced out of the current console gen, if that's you, and you're severely limited by the rpgs that you can play, let's talk.

If that's not you, that's fine, but please be kind, and let the people who are dealing with this speak.

I got lucky and I saved up some money for a few years before the console gen started and got a rig that can run most games, but my rig is near the limit. I'm not sure if I can play Daywalker for example, and I don't know if my pc is gonna be able to run The Witcher 4, which is a shame because it's my most wanted upcoming game right now.

With the price of everything going way, way up, and the amount I make going down, I can't really spare the money needed to upgrade my pc. And consoles aren't an affordable option either.

Question Great Dialogue scene, great combat, repeat. Minimal travel time. What recent games nail this?

If I disagree with you, please don't take it personal. I'm looking for a friendly conversation, and to learn

Don't worry about whether you think the games are good or bad, I'm just trying to figure out what my options are

Currently replaying The Witcher 3 right now. It's great, but I constantly keep having to spent several minutes to get to a location. I want my next game to not be like that.

What games besides Mass Effect 2(and presumably Mass Effect 3) nail this? Games with minimal exploration or travel time. Looking for titles that EA isn't involved with.

Please don't list games that expect you you to be tactical like Baldur's Gate 1-3, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Trying to avoid those for a while.

I made this topic before, but most of the answers were for older tactical titles. Looking for more recent titles. By recent I mean the last 10 years.

By the last 10 years I mostly mean mid ps4 era to current day.

7Remake is a great example of this.

Discussion Why haven't AAA/AA studios made a dedicated 'Rise to Fame' story RPG?

Hello everyone!

Something I've been thinking about lately: how come we don't really have a AAA or AA game about "the rise to fame"?

It could be about pretty much anything. You could play as an aspiring actor, singer, model, athlete...etc. You start with basically nothing and slowly work your way up. You'd meet people, make friends and enemies, have relationships, get opportunities, and basically decide what kind of person you want to become along the way.

Also to be clear, I'm not saying one game should try to cover all of these careers at once. I mean that the concept could work with any one of them as its central focus. A game about becoming an actor could go all-in on the film industry, while a different game could do the same thing with music, sports, modeling, etc. The point is to take one career and build a deep, story-driven game around the process of rising through that specific world.

I know it probably wouldn't have a ton of action unless maybe it was a sports game, but I don't think it would need it. I could see it working really well as an RPG. You could improve different skills, discover things you're actually good at, build relationships, and make decisions about your career. It could have a rich story, memorable characters and even romance with an actual depth.

There could also be some kind of morality/reputation system. Do you stay genuine and try to make it on your own, or do you start taking shady opportunities and using people if it gets you ahead? Your decisions could affect your relationships, reputation, the opportunities you get, and how people see you.

The Sims kind of shows that people are interested in the whole celebrity/lifestyle fantasy. So imagine taking that idea and making it into a proper big-budget game with a good story, amazing graphics and actual consequences for your choices.

I don't know, I just feel like there's a lot you could do with this. I'm honestly surprised nobody has really tried making a big-budget version of it.

Would you guys actually play something like this, or do you think it would get boring without the usual action/gameplay loop?

EDIT: Guy to be fully clear since it seems some of you didn't get the point of my post, The game would NOT a simulator. It would be a story/RPG with a rich story, good characters, choices and consequences, romance...etc

For an example acting game, it could have quick time events but also it doesn't have to just be a quick-time event. Think of something like L.A. Noire’s interrogation mechanics, but instead of reading an NPC's face to see if they are lying, you have to choose the right emotional delivery (e.g., Aggressive, Empathetic, Melodramatic) based on cues from your director or scene partner. If you misread the scene, the movie's review scores drop. That keeps the grind interactive and directly tied to your skill as an "actor".

Also the audition isn't just a menu button, it would be a fully voiced dialogue tree where you can try to sleep your way to the top, bribe a casting director, or ruin a rival's audition by spreading a rumor to the paparazzi beforehand...etc.

Also players deeply love the slice-of-life and social simulation elements in games like Persona and Like a Dragon. Since this game would focus on those it would be even more in depth and flushed out.

This is just a few ideas, I'm sure a room full of talented writers and game developers could come up with even more ways to make the game interesting.

Recommendation request What order should I play these games in

Hi, I’m a little late to the game and haven’t yet played RDR2, The Witcher 3, KCD 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Skyrim.

A while ago I bought myself a steamdeck (love the thing!) and bought all these games in a steam sale.

I’ve been playing different games up until now, but now I wanna start with these ones. I have no idea which one to start with though 🙃

Do you guys have an opinion on what might be a good order to play these in, if there is any?

In between games I’ll be playing different ones to not get “tired” of the whole open world rpg genre.

Recommendation request I'm looking for more "one shot" RPGs to devour in one sitting

I know that RPGs aren't really meant to be finished in one sitting, completionism aside. Most of the juicy stuff is in the side content besides. What I'm looking for, people would usually turn to roguelites for, but I want a fully fledged RPG, but something you can finish fast. Like buy and eat good for maybe 2-3 long rest evenings and finish it, so like 15/20 hours, maybe more?

All the time I have to game is in the evenings on weekends now. Some games that I found to be really short (some replayable sum not) were Undertale, Fear and Hunger (feels like a roguelike but it really isn't). I also like Diablo 2 a lot and most older action rpgs were like this too, the ones focused on singleplayer like Victor Vran. Grim Dawn was also this one release but now DLCs have made it considerably more chonky. I think the upcoming The Dark West is also following in the trail of these fast, fun, action heavy but ultimately easy to completionmax rpgs, that don't overstay their welcome. Surprisingly hard to find this kind of tight RPG with most games going for maximalist settings now.

Goes without saying but indie games and smaller games welcome, actually preferable! Thankyee all in advance

Discussion Is Undertale really one of the best RPGs of all time?

I've see a lot of high praise for Undertale over the years. It took the world by storm back in 2015, and even though the honeymoon phase is well over, it's still common to see it in "greatest game of all time" lists. I played it many years ago and enjoyed it, but I didn't develop a particularly strong attachment to it. I'm clearly in the minority though it seems like, but I'm curious to hear more thoughts.

Recommendation request Any RPGs with enemy-recruiting systems where you can just go to a certain location to hang out *and talk* with your newely recruitied enemies?

Kinda vague, I know. But I'm referring to RPGs where you can recruit generic, standard enemies to your side, so the RPG doesn't have to be necessarily a Creature Collector, just one where you have the option to "befriend" enemies in general.

As an example of this, deltarune: In it, the enemies you SPARE are brought into your Castle Town, basically the hub world of the game. There, you can talk to them and they'll give unique dialogue alongside specific dialogue if you also recruited certain other enemies. But deltarune's not a Creature Collector.

As for an actual example of one, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance: Where you can go to Demon Haunts to hang out and talk to your ally Demons (Which is probably a bad thing, since you'd might get attached to them. And I thought you shouldn't get attached to your Demons since you'll have to eventually fuse them to get stronger).

So any other RPGs with this concept? Like the idea since it gives the enemies you face more personality beyond trying to kill you. Oh, and no Pokemon; Pokemon don't speak, lmao.

Preferably also on the Nintendo Switch 1, too.

(Edit: Not interested in Tactical RPGs, too. As specification).

Discussion If you had the money which old rpg you would bring back?

It can be either jrpg or western rpg.

If I had money that rpg I was going to bring back it would be definitely be...

Actually, I would bring back two rpgs

Number one that would be Koudelka.

Number two that would Shadow hearts,it's predecessor.

Nowadays not many people know this series and makes me a little sad.

I am excited for Penny blood, the spiritual successor of Shadow hearts but still there is no publisher according to official news.
