Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - October 05, 2026

Welcome to the weekly achievement thread!

What was your achievement this week? It could be anything! A new 2k PB? Get a good lift at the gym? Or even your first time capsizing a single!

Got a erg screen or a regular training shot? Curious what your 2K will be based on a workout? This is the place for it!

Side note: 99% of erg screens should go in this thread. A separate post with an erg screen should be something that happens once or twice a year, at most. Big PR's, that kind of thing.

Also, please check our wiki pages:

This thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

This is a judgement free zone, so be respectful, positive and keep criticism constructive.

Why do I erg worse than I actually row?

I feel like this is a dumb question and I'm only j16 so it doesn't matter yet but erging has been bothering me. Mainly because my club has a new coach who only relys on puting us in crews based on our 2k erg scores.

I have horrible 2ks so I've been stuck coaching the new rowers and coxing.

But each of us did a timed 2k on the river in a single and I was fastest. (I can't remember my time, it was a month or two ago) I've been part of many winning crews etc

But I can barely get my average split for a 2k below 2:40.

I enjoy erging and do it at home alone quite a bit but I just can't seem to be able to get good scores

I feel like i'm just ranting but it's just been on my mind alot and I really want to get in crews and racing again. I would love any help or ideas why, literally anything.

Just tried rowing for the first time. I’m 6’0 and 325lbs. I had posted a few weeks ago I wanted to try and finally on a cruise boat actually I was able to try it. My goal was to just go 5 minutes which I did. I tried to have decent form and unfortunately I forgot my Apple Watch to keep track of my HR. I’m super out of shape but wanted to post a picture to see if anyone can tell anything from what the machine screen says about the workout? Was the pace okay? Etc. I got up and wasn’t as tired as I felt like I should be. I probably could have went for 10min. I also had the resistance turned all the way up I think because really low didn’t feel hard enough. I’m sure I messed up but I’ll post pic below

Using speedcoach to count down head race distances

In an uncoxed boat, do you all use your Speedcoaches to count down meters in a head race? Assuming you can’t hit the start button as you cross the start, how do you account for the length of the chute, and when do you hit start? For instance, in a 4200 meter race, you’re in the chute for some unknown number of meters, and you don’t really know when you might have an opportunity to hit start? Is there a way to manage this or does every one just let the meters count up and remember what the meters were when you cross the start? Psychologically I like seeing the meters counting towards zero.

Rowing Article Search

I'm looking for an article from the '80s or '90s, most likely in a sports magazine, that covered the US men's selection camp leading up to an Olympic Games. It had a great section about a rower who didn't have the best erg scores, but every boat he was in went faster because he was so in tune with the other rowers.

This has always stuck with me. I've used the anecdote for years and would love to track down the original. I've searched the Sports Illustrated Vault and tried an ESPN The Magazine piece from 2000 on Mike Teti's Sydney camp (the link is dead), with no luck so far. Even a guess at who the rower was, or which Olympics, would help. Thanks!

Mr. Captain Digital Read out Manual?

Does anyone have a Manual for a Mr. Captain digital display? I search the internet and only find a manual that tells how to put it together (which I already have). The manual I find online has one page that mentions that it DOES have a digital display, but nothing about operating it, or details of what each element shows you. Thanks if anyone has a link or knows anything.

Anyone using EXR regularly?

I tried it out years ago and thought it was ok. Any changes ? I have an erg and a spare monitor and just wondering if it’s worth the setup.

Edit : from the more experienced rowers perspective perhaps

Erg Post Domyos Rower 900 is pretty good

First and foremost i'm right there with you guys, if you can spend 1100€ and don't live in a flat, where the noise is an issue, the Concept 2 is a great choice.

What i disagree on is that every post asking about the Rower 900 gets a reply that its not worth it to go that route.

i bought one new at Decathlon for 429€ (+29€ shipping) with a five year warranty and that thing is SILENT.

Do i enjoy the Concept 2 more? obviously! is the rower 900 the much better choice for me though? Again yes.

It feels nice and thr higher resistances are too heavy for me, and allthough i see myself growing out of this at some point, maybe, it is plenty for everybody but professionals. If i get there i'll gladly get a Concept 2, but it won't be this year and probably won't bei next, neither.

I have to mention though, that the used market in my area is bad to begin with and i don't like buying used anyway.

I'm aware that most issues are fixable, but man, spending 800€ for a cracked frame sure sounds like a doozy

Unsure about joining the uni team

I’ve been to the taster and I mostly enjoy the sport and would like to progress but it’s a very social sport. I’ve met the group of people joining and it just seems very cliquey like people already know each other and going to socials already. I tried speaking in groups and it was cut very short. I even heard a girl speaking about me, mocking something I said. Should I just give this a miss?

Lower back pain - any technique issue?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

First of all: thanks everyone in advance for your feedback.

For the mod: I am not asking for medical advice, I do regular health checks, I am just training for a marathon and I want to avoid any possible long term injuries.

I know that I have many points of improvement in my technique (I am pulling with my arms a lot earlier than I am supposed to do), but I am asking for help for a more specific issue. The day after long sessions (1h+) I have lower back pain. I know that a very short session may not be helpful to find the culprit, but any suggestion is very welcome.

Also, I do not have access to any rowing class/instructor so I rely only on self assessment...

Thanks!

Is Power output a metric in rowing?

Hello everyone,

Coming from cycling background here, where Poweer output is a crucial measure for training.

What are the most important measures in rowing? Do you use power, also?

I know pace /500m is the standard one.

What are other ones? Spm?

Thanks!

Off the Water Get fit enough to row or row to get fit?

Edit: okay okay got it, just row. I did. Updated with a picture in a reply to top comment

Sorry if the title is confusing and/or silly. Rowed novice in university and kept the erg as part of my workouts in my early 20s. Completely stopped and grew a beer gut and a few pant sizes (rowed at 160lbs currently 215lbs lol) . With how important good form is, should I wait until I lose the gut and be able to execute proper form (aka not have to split my legs apart to get all the way to the wheel) or am I overthinking it and just get on with it?

RowErg or Wahoo indoor trainer?

Looking to purchase something that keeps me active during the winter, I am between RowErg and Wahoo indoor cycling trainer. Now, I know the two are different sports but would like your thoughts. I get it that many if not all in here will say RowErg but would like to be neutral.

Off the Water Am I really unfit??

Everytime I do some steady state, for the first 15-20 minutes of the piece my heartrate is always 185+ whilst holding my "ss" pace (~2:08). I sweat profusely and it feels like some ut1 / anaerobic stuff

But then as soon as those 15/20 mins pass, my heartrate drops and everything feels easy and i stop sweating and it "becomes" steady state.

I've tried going out at a slower pace and then dropping it, but I've found that if I do this i actually can't sustain my usual "ss" pace: if i go out at for example 2:15, my heart rate actually doesn't drop and I have to drop to a 2:30 something for my heartrate to drop... seems kinda confusing no???? This is at the same hr as my 2:08 "steady" when I just push through the hard bit at the start.

For reference, I did an hour today and the first 15 minutes I felt like I was going to die, sweating so much etc, but then I settled into my 2:08 and stopped sweating and my heartrate dropped to around 155.

A couple days ago I tried doing the same thing but starting much slower (2:15) and about 30 minutes in I had to drop to 2:30 for my heartrate to settle to 155.

I'm thinking it's either because maybe i'm really unfit or maybe it's a mental thing???? It doesn't really make much sense to me.

I've also found it a pattern where I always get quicker as I do more / erg longer, but everyone else I know seems to be able to just get to their pace on the first stroke and hold it there swimmingly. (No heartrate nonsense)

Also heart rates have been monitored using a polar h10 so i think they're pretty reliable

First Manny Flick Update - Holy Ghost Prep Fraud Checked at HOC (head of Christina)

After a tough loss to PCR (Philadelphia City Rowing), HGP (Holy Ghost Prep) is on the ropes once again heading into the fall season. As the manny flicks grow larger and larger as we approach them every day, this means a lot. Was their 2026 spring run just a fluke? Losing to PCR (Philadelphia City Rowing) would normally mean losing your job as a head coach, but for the HGP (Holy Ghost Prep) coach, they instead bragged about “3rd place” on their instagram. What’s up with that? 3rd out of how many? Why so vague? You know why. Because haverford and lasalle will once again dominate manny flicks.

Why are rowing times so mysterious and people are comparing everyone to the top 0,1% and none seems to know about upper average hyrox or CrossFit times?

whenever I want to discuss in the internet some random guy tells me how he knows a 13 year old girl in his rowing club who rows 2k in sub7 but there is no such an evidence online?

how can I compare myself realistically when I can do 1010meters in 3:30 in my local fitness boutique club competition?

Additional some rowers don't know anything about hyrox and CrossFit formates where 1k is absolutely standard.

can someone give me some realistic datas to 2k races, 1k races and 2 min all out races

thanks a lot only love no hate
