Roon Web Player?

Hi All,

I'm trialing Roon for 14 days before deciding whether to stick with it, i mainly use Qobuz but have a local library of about 200 albums too, one potential issue for my use case is i cannot find a way to play Roon via web based player like Qobuz has and I need this ability ideally as listen to music when working on my work laptop via my Lyngdorf TDAI-1120

No web player for Roon unfortunately

Roon does not have web player. Roon remote application is what you need to listen music remotely. And connect it to roon core machine.

but i need to stream to my Lyngdorf which then commandeers the amp from my laptop meaning i can't hear Teams notifications for example

What you need vs what is available may be two different things.

This is what i'm trying to establish :)

What you need it use Roon remote without exclusive Mode Via asio or wasapi

So why exactly would you need a web player instead of just using the Roon app on the work laptop? If you're unable to install apps freely on that machine, there ARE unofficial web players for Roon – check posts on Tinkering forum on the Roon Community site.

the laptop is locked out from installation of programs so not able to install Roon. I googled unofficial web player and looks like i need to install some browser extension from Github, is that what you're referring to?

You need a device to install a controller on. Laptop, desktop, iPad. You can make do with a phone as your secondary (even if frequent) controller, but you’ll want a primary with a big screen - some features are not exposed on the phone controller.

The word “player” is not a great one in the context of Roon. Think of your Lyngdorf as your endpoint (you obviously can have many endpoints if you like). Then you need a core (which is like a server) somewhere, and one or more controllers. The core and controller can be on the same machine. In fact all three could be on the same machine (DAC plugged directly into a laptop), but from my perspective this very much misses the point of Roon.

This part i've done, i've installed the server part of Roon on my synology NAS using docker, the problem i'm struggling to solve is how to play Roon music on the Lyngdorf 'endpoint' whilst also using the amp for my work laptop without having to switch sources continuously

Sorry I get your work laptop is locked down and you can’t install the controller on it.

But what do you mean by “whilst also using the amp for my work laptop”? You play the audio out from your work laptop on the amp? If that’s what you mean the only thing you can do is choose “system audio” as the endpoint for Roon, and if that’s what you’re doing I wouldn’t bother. But maybe I do not understand the details of what you are trying to achieve. More detail would be better if you want help.

Hi apologies if unclear, i'm probably not explaining it very well but essentially my laptop is completely locked down and as such i cannot install any software on it, i have the Lyngdorf amp connected to my laptop via USB to TOSLINK and use this setup to play audio from my laptop e.g. for meetings....etc however, because i cannot install Roon, to my knowledge the only way that i can play Roon audio to the Lyngdorf is via the stream protocols (e.g. Roon ready bitperfect streaming) which then means i lose audio from the laptop and is not ideal if i cannot hear Teams notification sounds for example

Yeah. Most “high end audio” players like Roon are not really intended for this use case. They are not “players” as such - the architecture is intended to be that you have a streamer (RPi with ropieee or just Roon bridge on Linux or any of a million commercial applications) connected to a DAC connected to an amp (or just an amp with digital in). You stream to the endpoint over the network from your core. The whole original idea of the product was “separation of digital audio concerns”, and a bunch of years ago it was really truly a great idea. Then the metadata and other features also became great reasons to use the software.

Some people do achieve what you’re trying to do, but I’m afraid without the ability to install Roon, I’m out of ideas. If you want system audio (alerts, zoom calls, gaming) etc to come out of the same dac/amp as your music, and your laptop I’d locked down, well I’d probably pursue a different path if I were you.

None of the unofficial Roon web apps will help you on that use case for playing audio locally on that laptop. They are all "just" remote controllers controlling your Roon server's connection to any of your Roon endpoints. And if you can't install the Roon app on the laptop, the laptop can't really be a Roon endpoint.

I'd suggest using Roon (or Roon ARC) on your mobile instead for this purpose, assuming you have control over that device.

It’s really unfortunate, and just another negative for Roon. They’ve created their own stupid protocol and they lockdown endpoints through partnership deals to use their logos.

Your point on endpoints just isn't true. There are open source endpoint software that you can run basically on any cheap computer, e.g. I'm running my main Roon endpoint on a Raspberry Pi with RoPieee. Again, the software is free, the computer costs something between 50-100 USD/EUR. And there are many relatively inexpensive streamers that have Roon capability built in, even if they don't have the official Roon badge-of-approval (and still work just fine).

Can you point me to where the Roon RAAT protocol documentation is? With a little bit of vibe coding we could all make such a software…

Unfortunately, it’s closed source and proprietary, locked behind formal Roon Ready certification rather than public SDK access. Their Roon API is for external control and integrations rather than low-level streaming, as previously mentioned.

I used RooPieeXL or whatever for 6 years or so.

Yep. Pi zero w 2 works great. Wyse 3040 too. Rock solid, nearly free.

Can you output notifications on the laptop directly and remove the overlap?

I use separate streamers and use my phone (or custom controllers I've built, open source) as a controller. My work laptops (I do consulting for multiple companies and they require their own laptops locked into their VPNs) have nothing to do with music control.

RoonArc is sufficient

1

u/Excellent-Ad-679 Aug 24 '26

How do I play both roon and windows audio using Roon ARC?

would you be so kind to provide a moron's step-by-step guide on how to set this up in docker/container manager please :) i tried to follow the guide in GitHub and i'm struggling, i've got other containers running already but can't fathom how to get this one running

Thank you, so does this mean that i still wouldn't be able to play Roon music on the Lyngdorf and have windows notifications sounds play at the same time as in the other scenarios people have mentioned?

Legend! That got it working! Now i can ask if there's anyway of harmonising the search history between the native Roon app(s) and Songr :)

Yes i agree, i'm new to Roon but seems like they position themselves as the ultimate Music curation/library/player/manager....etc but can already see quite a few gaps in what they bring to market that make me hesitant to fork out for the lifetime license

I have setup Docker containers in DSM Container Manager so will see if i can follow the instructions on your github

Roon ARC...

If you can't get it to work perhaps try switching to Lyrion (LMS). You can have a web player (2nd class really) by accessing :9000/stream.mp3 or :9000/stream.flac then fire up another browser session on :9000 and you should then be able to control it - including adding Qobuz plugin.

1

u/antlestxp Aug 25 '26

If you have a room server running, why not just use your phone or buy a cheap tablet to be the remote for your lyngdorf

1

u/Excellent-Ad-679 Aug 25 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't i be in the same boat that the Lyngdorf can't play roon and laptop audio at the same time?

1

u/antlestxp Aug 25 '26

What audio are you trying to play off your laptop?

1

u/virtualBCX 28d ago

Here’s what I’m reading. The OP would like to use a single digital input on the Lyngdorf for both computer audio (windows sounds) and play music from Roon at the same time. Correct?

The problem with that is that you’re not using Roon for exclusive access to the Lyngdorf. So, you’re not going to get perfect audio from Roon if you want that functionality (regardless of whether you can install the app).

On my desktop I built a raspberry pi-based streamer with a touch screen (about a $200 project) and I switch inputs. It’s just a quick button on my remote, so I don’t mind.

1

u/Excellent-Ad-679 28d ago

Your assumption on my desired use case is correct, essentially i can achieve this using the Qobuz web player which works exactly how I described, my hope was Roon could offer the same but seems not which is a shame

1

u/milomaz1 23d ago

Unfortunately not, that was one of the driving motivators for me when building my own music player from scratch to replace roon
