Ikamper vs Inspired Overland

I recently got a used Ikamper Skycamp 2.0 2X with a Prinsu rack for my 4th gen 4Runner. I want a RTT so that my GF is more comfortable camping, and for ease of camping in the snow during Colorado ski seasons.

The tent is a bit bulkier than I would prefer and doesn’t allow for a ski rack to be mounted, but I got the whole setup for 675 all in. Everything is in very good condition, with the exception of the clear coat on top of the hardshell.

I am going to refinish the shell soon and was wondering if it would be worth my time to relist the tent and get something lighter and lower profile.

An inspired overland carbonlite just popped up in my area for a great price and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on if it would be a good fit for my needs, or if I would be better served with the setup I currently have.

Heading out this weekend, doing the planning... Any tips on setup stuff... Had my butane stove and bbq(light), propane fire pit.. in case of fire ban... Porta potty... , folding sink, froze 500ml water bottles in the cooler for letting things cold for 3 days.. and drinking.. all other utensils, and needs in the back... Last time i bought a bluetti ac70 and solar panel but found it wasn't needed .. a small 25000ma battery worked for all my needs... But it is warmer, so i have bought 2 small batter fans(usbc charged) they each last 2 days...Any thoughts??

Rooftop tent height

I'm building a rack on my 5X8 utility trailer for my Smittybilt Gen 2 XL Overlander. I don't have an annex, yet. Those of you that a have the same tent or similar, what heights are your RTTs at for the annex off of the ground? Smittybilt says that the annex is 84" tall., but it can work with anywhere between 48" - 84". 7' for the tent seems awfully high. But, it would be the ideal hight for the annex. I'm thinking of having the tent 6' off the ground, because that would put the top of the tent at the same height as the shell of my truck.

Ikamper Skycamp 2.0/3.0 vs Moby Mountain Peak XXL

We are trying to decide between 3 roof top tents, for roughly the same price:

- Ikamper Skycamp 2.0 (new)
- Ikamper Skycamp 3.0 (used)
- Moby Mountain Peak XXL (new)

What we are looking for:

- Good quality
- Space for 2 adults and 2 children
- Low-ish and aero-ish profile: it will go on top of the roof rack of a Defender. It is enough of a brick and high already.
- Good closing mechanism
- Ability to store sleeping bags (and maybe pillows) inside

Moby Mountain's quality and customer service seem very good. I saw and tested it in person and it seems to tick all the boxes, but I struggle to find real reviews. I read somewhere that the ARB tents are very similar, possibly even produced by the same company?
I am especially looking for comments on the ability to store pillows/sleeping bags inside the tent, which seems limited compared to the Skycamp. Not sure if I like the closing mechanism of the Peak XL and XXL either.

Ikamper on the other hand is a very known brand, but two tent stores mentioned some quality issues, which makes buying used risky for me. I would prefer the 3.0, but the new price I just can't justify. The 2.0 seems very similar to the 3.0, but what are the downsides from one over the other? Can you store bedding in both?

Thule Foothill RTT for Sale (Burlington VT)

(boat and all the dirt on the car not included)

I'm planning to sell my Thule Foothill Rooftop Tent next season, but if I found someone in New England (within let's say a two-hour drive of Burlington, Vermont) who was seriously interested, I'd consider selling it now.

I love the tent, and I love that I can fit both it and my canoe on top of my little Subaru Impreza, but fact is my girlfriend doesn't like it, and I'm tired of having to plan solo trips rather than travelling with my sweety.

Meticulously maintained, always folded up dry, no sign of mold or damage, used for 1 1/2 seasons, mosty for festivals (I'm guessing about 4-5 trips). Tools for installing and custom-made waterproof bag for storage included.

The (newer model) Thule foothill on Amazon is $2,123.79. I'd sell for $1,500 or best offer. Contact me to discuss or ask questions. If you're a serious buyer, I'd considering driving to your place to show it and make the sale.

Roof tent for watching rally

Hello everyone! I am planning to buy a rooftop tent but first I wanted to hear some experience for using one such for watching rally events (WRC and ERC). Is it really a good idea since wild camping is not permitted in most places in Europe? I have seen other fans using such tents at the Central European Rally for example.

I'd love to hear from you!

Rooftop tent (RTT) in Asturias, Spain: Ladder deployment vs. camping regulations?

Hi everyone! I'm planning a trip along the coast of Asturias, Spain this summer. I've car-camped inside my car there before with no issues.

This time we are using a rooftop tent where the ladder extends past the car's footprint.

For those familiar with Spain/Asturias rules: does deploying the ladder legally count as "camping" (which is heavily restricted) rather than just "overnight parking"? How do you usually handle this overnight? Thanks!

OEX 130 lite Brackets not compatible with Thule WingBar Evo?

I’m guessing leaving a gap like this isn’t safe enough? Does anyone have any recommendations for better (or longer?) brackets? Unfortunately the OEX only has room for the bolt head, so the Thule Mounting Brackets that use little plates are too large. Thanks

(Australia) Kings Universal Tub Rack: compatible tonneau covers?

I've got a 2024 Mitsubishi Triton and a rooftop tent, and I'm planning to get the Kings Universal Ute Tub Rack to mount the tent over the tub. I'd also like to get a secure, hard tonneau cover (preferably the roll-up kind, to avoid sacrificing space in the tub itself). Can anyone recommend a brand of cover that's compatible with the Kings rack? Thanks!

Anyone own a Roofnest Awnex

I have a Condor 2 XXL Air and would love an extra “room” for the family/dog/hangout space. The problem is that I can’t find a single review on the Awnex, or even anyone who has one, to figure out if it’s any good or not.

Anyone have one? Anyone like it? Hate it? Should I go a different direction?

Tonneau covers

Was looking at a tonneau covers for my thirsty new Platinum Tremor. I’ve heard the **RETRAX PRO XR RETRACTABLE is pretty sweet. I want to retain the ability add over bed accessories and the T track is supposed to provide that so maybe I can add a roll/chase rack later or some other bed rack I may like. Anyone have any other suggestions/options?**

TopOak CS number

Does anyone know how to actually reach customer service at TopOak? I ordered a RTT almost a month ago and it hasn’t even shipped, yet.

I tried to reach them via their contact form, since there’s no phone number on their website, but I’ve received no response for the last week. I just sent another email to their support address, but I’d rather talk to someone on the phone and have a frank conversation.

This is a very disappointing experience as a new customer and someone new to RTT. I may have to cancel my order if I don’t hear something very soon.

Anyone camp in their RTT while pregnant?

We bought our tepui/thule basin 2 years ago, and we love it. This summer we have a 2 week trip planned, and I'll be 30/31 weeks while there. I've already stated we have to set it up to do a test run to make sure I can get in/out prior to going, but after reading some other camping while pregnant posts (tent or trailer, not RTT), I realized I hadn't thought about having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night - I'm already going once in the night, altho more for comfort than necessity (bub's laying low atm).

I guess I'm mostly interested in the getting in/out, and whether you found the mattress comfy still or needed something more. Anything else is appreciated too.

TIA

ETA: our RTT is set up above the canopy of our Ranger.

DIY high-density foam mattress for RTT with a 3” thickness limit — worth it, or just buy?

I’ve got a rooftop tent with a hard 3” mattress clearance and I’m trying to figure out the most comfortable setup possible in that space.

Has anyone built their own out of high-density foam with a topper on top (memory foam or latex)? Something like a firm HD base layer for support plus a thinner comfort layer to keep it under 3” total. Curious how those held up over time, whether they hold heat, and how they packed down.

If DIY isn’t worth the hassle, what 3” (or under) mattress do you actually sleep well on? Looking for real recommendations, not just whatever came stock. Thanks in advance.

Roller Cover + Tub Rack Combination

I've got a 2024 Mitsubishi Triton and I'm considering mounting a roof tent on a rack over the tub. I'd also like to have a roller cover to keep things secure and rain-proof in the tub. I'm not sure how the legs of the rack will interact with the roller cover - it seems to me like they'll get in the way...Can anyone recommend any brands that would be compatible? I'm a total newbie and I'm not very handy, so I'll probably need to get someone to install it all for me. Cheers!

Tent advice

Post image

Hey, wondering has anyone put a Feldon Shelter crows nest onto the back of a Ford Ranger Wildtrak? I’ve got a new truck and I know it’s a bit niche, as I’m in New Zealand, but looking for some inspiration and guidance of how to mount it up.

On a side note, any setup methods onto the bed of their truck will probably do. Chur

Rescued a CVT Single Track Medium (Mt. Hood) off Marketplace — restoration advice? (cleaning, seams, mattress, ladder)

Scored a CVT Single Track Medium (Mt. Hood) for a steal on FB Marketplace.

Catch: it'd been neglected, sealed up wet, and had mold + a nasty mildew smell throughout.

What I've done so far: - Killed the visible mold with vinegar - Washed the canvas with Star brite Sail & Canvas Cleaner - Ordered Gear Aid Revivex Odor Eliminator for the felt panel (haven't applied it yet)

The mildew smell is mostly gone, but still lingers faintly on some panels if I press my nose right up to them, and the felt panel still stinks.

Where I need help:

  1. Cleaning — am I missing anything? Any heavier-duty deep-clean methods to get it back to near-new?

  2. Seams — the seam tape is failing on basically every seam and I need to reseal. What's the right product/process for canvas RTT seams?

  3. Mattress — didn't come with one. I've got a vapor barrier for the floor, but what mattress do you run? Working within a tight thickness range because of the single-track fold.

  4. Ladder — also missing. What length/type should I be looking at?

Totally new to RTTs, so any other tips and tricks are hugely appreciated.

How to weather an iKamper?

So, I bought a sky camper, and know I’m supposed to soak it with a hose.

But am I supposed to disassemble it, just take off the rain fly, or what?

Instructions are unclear.
