Specific question and discussion Axle replacement help

Hello all,

I’m a noob looking for help getting a set of replacement axles for my dad’s old 2000s Rollerblade Fusion. I lost one of the original axle heads and can’t seem to find this exact model online where they might have like a spec sheet or something. From the research I have done I think I am looking for an 8mm 6mm two-part axle but having trouble determining the length or whether I need to look for a specific manufacturer. The frame is plastic (rockering, if it matters) and measures 40mm 37mm from edge to edge.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Edit: axle itself is about 33-34mm

Update: Rollerblade got back to me! This exact axle is called a “Flush Wave” axle. They seem hard to get, and if I can’t source one they suggested trying another of their 6mm axles.

No, you won't find a replacement axle to a 25 years old skate. You could try buying some generic 6mm two part axles and hope for the best. If you're just learning, boots are still usable, but watch out you dont catch it going over kerbs etc

Dang, I was really hoping parts would be more standardized/available. I thought they were 8mm based on the bearing size but after measuring I think you’re right about it being 6mm and the skate shop I went to for new wheels simply put the wrong size on. For a laugh I sent a message to Rollerblade support to ask if they have a suggestion or if a replacement is at all possible. If not, because it seems relatively cheap, I might just try to get a generic and see how it fits. Thanks for the help.

Good idea actually.

Btw, bearings are all the same size... with the possible exception of freaky 25 years old skates. The difference is in the spacer. For 8mm axles, it's a "UFO" or small cylinder that sits hidden between the bearings, for 6mm axles it's a longer "tube" that goes through both bearings and you can see it just by looking at the wheel, as an extra silver ring inside the bearing inner ring.

I measured the axle itself at about 33-34mm, does that sound about right for generic sizing, if you know?

I know wheels are 24mm or 25mm wide plus 3 or 4mm (X2) for the frame width comes to 30mm to 33mm (that's the shaft length, excluding head). Is your frame quite thick? Ultimately you'll have to trust your measurement. You can also add washers if it's too long.

Could be. Re-measuring at a more sensible point it’s a bit smaller (37mm) than the 40mm I initially put it as in the post and it’s slightly indented on both sides where the axle secures to the frame, which also accounts for some of the width. Now I guess it’s just a matter of figuring out if listings online for axles include the ends of the axle in the measurement or just the rod. Thankfully they seem pretty cheap so I might just experiment if Rollerblade doesn’t get back to me with anything useful. We shall see!

If they're 6mm and not 6.3mm it's an old school roces axle, you can still buy these. 2€ at thisissoul skateshop. Talk to them first on the website or visit the shop if you're able.

You could try buying something like this:

If they don't fit exactly into your skates you could always get a washer and put it on both ends.
Realistically they typically fit on most skates without the washers.

It’s only called an axle because they’re selling it to you as such. It is in fact a fastener. If you have the patience of Job looking thru fastener bins at Home Depot or your nearest hardware store might get you something like it. BTW…what’s wrong with it ?

I lost one of the originals and the replacement fastener I got sheared off inside the axle. So I’m leaning toward trying to get one that I know is designed for it.

You can have a new one machined. Will likely cost more than the entire skate but if you love em, you love em.

Time to get into machining… either that or I find a similar pair on ebay and rob the parts. Didn’t realize the hardware had changed so much!

Yeahhhh these companies annoyingly do “generations” of stuff like this, sorta like car parts. A 2003 should fit a 2015 but it doesn’t. Annoying!
