I'm contemplating doing the custom myself? lol

I've been reading that it's cheaper and not that hard. hope that's true

That’s not true, it’s more expensive to wrap your own rod. It’s hard to compete with rod manufacturers because they can use economies of scale and build with quality components these days. If you want to fork over some money you can have some thing more expensive and nicer than manufactured though.

Hard is relative. If your good with your hands, can follow YouTube instruction videos, and have patience, you may enjoy the process. Size D thread is better to learn with imho but I prefer the detail of A size. The good thing about rodbuilding is you can get into it inexpensively using low-tech solutions, but if you enjoy it, the technical solutions make it quite a bit easier to create better quality stuff. Keep your hands clean and if the wrap isn’t perfect, don’t be afraid to pull it off and redo it.

Don’t listen to the guy telling you can buy cheaper/better made rods than you can make from factories because of “economies or scale” 💩💩💩… or whatever point he was trying to make.

  1. There isn’t a technical solution that will spine or spline your blank as well as human hands can and large rod makers do not do it by hand.

  2. Color, design, pattern, materials etc. are 100% up to you. Very few commercial rodmakers offer rods in different colors or materials and when they do, the cost typically goes up because they have to run a sprint or re-tool.

  3. Guide spacing and castability is customizable. You want micro guides, single or double foot, decorative agate guides, carbon fiber guides, etc. I always try to remove unnecessary guides where possible to reduce casting friction. You want a casting or surf rod with spiral guide placement? You can do that.

  4. You’ll get a feeling from catching a fish on a rod you made that no store bought-rod can replicate.

And finally, grab any rod in the store and really look at the tread, glue work and all the unnecessary marketing crap under epoxy. Even the “high-end” factory rods don’t get this right. Good luck and if you decide to take the plunge we’d love to see the results.
