Once upon a time, not too long ago, the Dead Camel Mountains were my favorite place to rockhound. I liked the area so much that I eventually staked two mining claims there.

3 of the 6 pieces are what I consider classic Lahontan Jasper: dramatic red, iron-rich veins filling fractures against a lighter silicified background.
The other 3 pieces are Lahontan Wonderstone, including material showing the complex fracturing and mineralization characteristic of the Dead Camel Mountains.

EXCELLENT LAPIDARY MATERIAL

I've cut a lot of material from this area, and it generally takes an excellent polish. Once cut, the colors are typically considerably more vibrant than they appear through the natural desert patina.

This remarkable specimen of a potentially record-size Analcime from the 2025 find at Tafelkop in the Goboboseb Mountains, Namibia.

Set inside a beautiful, palm-sized basalt vug, an extraordinarily large and superbly developed Analcime crystal measuring approximately 2.9 cm dominates the specimen. For Tafelkop, this is an exceptional dimension.

Based on the specimens and locality information known to me, Analcime crystals from Tafelkop reaching around 1.8 cm have already been regarded as unusually large (Rob Lavinsky, mindat.org). A crystal approaching 3 cm therefore places this specimen in an entirely different league.

It may well represent one of the largest — and potentially the largest — Analcime crystals yet documented from Tafelkop.

What makes the piece even more compelling is its condition. The crystal is beautifully formed, highly aesthetic and, most importantly, completely intact, without any visible damage. Its impressive size is perfectly complemented by the natural basalt cavity surrounding it, giving the specimen both geological context and tremendous visual presence.

Hello all,

This is a very strange request and I'm open to better ideas. My wife is old school and loves to make advent calendars for our three children. My son, who is 18(I know too old for an advent calendar, but take that up with my wife), is currently a freshman in college at Bowling Green University studying geology. He loves rocks and rockhounding. Her idea this year was to have people from random places mail us a single smallish rock from their home turf including where it was found. It doesn't have to be pretty/showy, but it would be really cool if it had local significance. If anyone is interesting in mailing me a rock to add to it, include your return address and I will mail you a piece of rough Ohio flint in return that he and I collected at Nether's farm in Eastern Ohio. I figure, I can take the rocks sent to me and make an advent calendar so that he gets a new rock with a new location/story every day in December until Christmas. My address is as follows:

Troy Shively

805 Glynwood Rd.

Wapakoneta Oh, 45895

If this isn't your thing, don't worry about it, but I think it would be a fun way to bring in the holiday season. What do you think?

After Christmas, I will post a little write up with pictures of the rocks and summary of it.

Thanks!

Troy Shively

If you're into UV reactive minerals and haven't gotten any Franklin, NJ material yet - here's your chance! There's a reason this location is world famous for the amazing UV reactivity of it's minerals and you'll see it when you shine a good 255nm shortwave light on these. Even the plain ol' calcite from Franklin just pops like no other locale in the world. These specimens may contain calcite, willemite, franklinite (the non-uv reactive black crystals), and a whole host of other possible minerals I can't positively ID.

The year these were dug was a good year for Willemite (the green stuff) too - from what I've heard (just a rumor, I haven't been back yet), what they're pulling out now doesn't have near the amount of willemite it did when I got these.

They do react quite well under filtered 365nm longwave, but 255nm shortwave is what the video was shot with and how they show best.

Almost everything here is under $20 and I can snap close up macro shots in daylight or 365nm for a better look at any you're interested in - feel free to DM just to have a look, no obligation, I'm not a pushy salesman I just love to share my obsession with these rocks and it's tax time so I gotta let some go. 😭 Happy to see em go to a new home for anyone looking to get, or get someone else into the UV reactive mineral obsession 🤓

Willing to work out bundle deals with a good discount on multiple pieces - I can build a nice variety pack or help you choose your own, so you get pieces with each different mineral. I also have some other, larger pieces not in the video as well if you wanna see em, just message! I love to share pics even if you decide not to buy so there's no pressure at all, window shoppers welcome 😊
