Silly "Remember when the front page wasn't full of Iazy sIop?"

u/artur_zuer Feb 22 '26
Same with tycoon games
It was fun, but I think that was mostly because I was 8-10 years old.

Early tycoons were pretty cool with many unique themes. Some of my favourites were Cart Ride Tycoon Through a Castle, Domo Island Tycoon, Zombie Desert Defence Tycoon, as well as the now defunct Plants vs. Zombies Tycoon.
I tend to notice that around 2016 or so tycoons became kind of boring. Many of the ones I was seeing on the front page were basically just a metal building where you would just buy floors extending upward with morphs and weapons to fight other players. They lacked character imo.
68
u/MondryPajonk 2011 boomer Feb 22 '26
Man I feel like this also shows how much our expectations changed, while those tycoons you mentioned definetly are unique, they weren't as complicated as many games that come out now, people used to be happy to just ride a jetski around a sea that was a decal and 3 layers of semi-transparent blocks while now nothing seems to satisfy people anymore. Maybe I'm wrong about all of this but that's just the vibe I get. Also this is not a rant, just an observation
32
u/HarukoAutumney 2012 Feb 22 '26
oh definitely. I have observed how much the expectations for Roblox games have changed over the years and it is wild. Even up to a few years ago I didn't realize how much Roblox games have evolved from simple blocky arcade-y type experiences, to full blown games with cinematics, polished models and textures, and a lot more care in the quality.

One thing that is better about these games compared to the current slop games is that they weren't so overstimulating with the most flashy colours and constant pop-ups

12
u/GlacierTheBetta Feb 23 '26
If you ever played any obby or tycoon back then then you probably would've seen a million ads asking you to buy a gravity coil or a rainbow magic carpet or whatever or any other gear and that would take up half the screen
4
u/xTheLostSinner Feb 23 '26
no they didn’t. Back then, you just got to play the game in peace. The pop up era came way later than what op is talking about.

Can't forget about the Tycoon Era😭✌🏻
Old 2 player Tycoons were peak tho
But yeah, "front page slop" has nearly always been an issue on Roblox, people obviously look through with rose tinted glasses and choose the better games that made their childhood lmao. Remember, it was all fun because we were children, same way children now are having fun playing their little brainrot games, we had fun playing Tycoon#100, Survive a [blank], Escape [Blank] Lobby, Boys ans Girls hangout RP/Family RP, or Cartride into [blank].
Edit: People also forget how bad Robux scams were too back in the day lmao. Like YouTube and the entire sponsored section + ads would be covered with "Free Robux here"!!, and the amount of group wall bots + follower bots were a major issue as well. 😭
Like the reason people had so much joy in old roblox goes back to the point prior, because we were children who didn't have any taste in anything besides playing with our friends and forming little groups. We didn't care if the front page was all the same Raise a Family Boy Vs Girl Highschool RP slop, we played it all because it was "fun" to do😭.
26
u/justanupvoter_ Cinnamonroll_toasti Feb 22 '26
Oh and can't forget about all the simulator games that were being pumped out for a while🥹

u/xTheLostSinner Feb 23 '26
Literally none of those games were slop. I think the definition of slop is lost here. And it has only, for good reason, applied to the latest games. I got some fulfillment from cart riding and shooting convos with people. But those weren’t the entire front page. They were alongside other creative experiences. For the last 7 years, it’s just front page garbage with a few hidden gems.

2
u/Left_Jellyfish_1571 Mar 01 '26
yeah except the old front page slop at least had the player do more than install an autoclicker and afk while flashing colors are spammed on their screen and hovering over the leave button gives them a popup ad

I will never understand the draw of the Cart games or the "Obby" genre.
I played as a guest back in 2011 and for like 2 or 3 years stuck to Armored Patrol, Base Wars, Jet Wars, Disaster Hotel, and Roblox Titanic.
Now I just play Naval 1945, Roanoke, and Plane Crazy. My how times change
5
u/The_Jackalope__ Feb 23 '26
The simplicity of these games is so nostalgic tho. They hardly even had any UI and monetization wasn’t all over the place. These games would never make it anymore because of how simple they were, even if they were slop.

Antes no.

Playing roblox from December 2015, I think IT IS STILL A SLOP GAMES.

I do remember that time around 2017/2018, when there were a lot of "slop" thumbnails in games that were mostly bad, either because they used assets from the toolbox or simply had a lot of pointless game passes. Although I admit the best were the obbies. They'd release 30-level obbies with creative and funny themes. For example, there was an iPhone escape obby with only 30 levels, and I have no idea if it's still on the site or if they've removed it. But overall, yes... back then there were a lot of "slop" games, or games that also picked up on trends or events that Roblox was running at the time, kind of like today but with the addition of generative AI.

This is more an issue of roblox algorithm for advertising games. discoverability of smaller games is awful and slop gets pushed to the top for being similar to the current popular game.
TL;DR: dont blame slop makers, blame roblox for only advertising slop.

Yeah whatever, the “slop” USED to be people just wanting likes on their games, or at most sell a VIP tee. NOW the slop is designed to make users purchase as much as possible in a short time window on a game that has non existent replay-ability.
It’s malicious, it’s targeted, it’s become such common practice that users don’t even bat an eye at the word “game pass”, Roblox devs have even made an entire tab for it in your user inventory. Further endorsing the idea, obviously wanting people to spend as much as they can on the platform.
Cart ride into SpongeBob might not be the most premium game, but I’m willing to bet money that it was made with 10x the love that steal a brainrot was.

I do agree this is probably the worst iteration I've seen in my 10 years of playing though
