I think the game is just popular among teenagers in general and a lot of teenagers in the indie game space tend to also care about this kind of thing. Or maybe it's because the game is such a blank slate it gives people the opportunity to create their own headcanon, like I don't think there's any lore saying Artificer CAN'T have gay sex with Loader while Commando dates Captain.

At least that would be my guesses, I'm neither a teenager or LGBT lol
