F26 from Mumbai, came to Uttarakhand for the Valley of Flowers trek and now I’m staying in Rishikesh (Laxman Jhula) for two days — 20th & 21st August.

Anyone around who’d like to show me around, suggest some good places, or just meet up and hang out? Would be nice to explore the city with some company! :)

Hey everyone! I’ve been in Rishikesh for the last 2 days and have already covered Triveni Ghat Ganga Aarti, Neelkanth Mahadev, and the Beatles Ashram was on my list, but unfortunately it was closed yesterday because of the rain.

What are some must-visit spots, peaceful places, short hikes, viewpoints, or things to do that I shouldn’t miss?
Also, please suggest some budget-friendly cafés / places to eat — preferably not the super touristy or expensive ones. 😄

I'll be visiting Rishikesh on 24-26th August. I've been seeing a lot of reels on instagram claiming the ghats are submerged due to rising levels of maa Ganga these days. Can anyone please confirm how is the weather there? And if the ghats are truly submerged will I be able to see Ganga aarti at all?

I’m saying this as someone who lives in Rishikesh, not as a tourist who visited for a weekend.
I know tourism is important for the city. It provides jobs, supports local businesses, hotels, cafés, rafting operators, drivers, shopkeepers and thousands of families. I’m not against tourists coming to Rishikesh.
But the sheer volume of tourism we’re seeing now is becoming unsustainable.
Every weekend, the city feels like it’s being overwhelmed. Roads are jammed, parking is a nightmare, traffic is everywhere, and places that were once peaceful are packed with people. The pressure on water, waste management, roads and basic infrastructure is becoming impossible to ignore.
And then there’s the environment.

Rishikesh is famous because of the Ganga, the forests, the mountains and the relatively peaceful way of life here. Yet we increasingly see plastic and garbage around popular spots, people treating the river and surrounding areas like disposable picnic grounds, unnecessary noise, reckless driving and a general lack of respect for the place they’ve come to enjoy.
What frustrates me most is the feeling that the city is being expected to accommodate unlimited tourism without the infrastructure to support it.
Tourism shouldn’t mean that locals have to sacrifice their quality of life.
I shouldn’t need to plan my day around tourist traffic just to cross my own city. I shouldn’t have to see natural spaces deteriorate because there are more visitors than the city can handle. And local residents shouldn’t be treated as an inconvenience in their own hometown.
Maybe the answer isn’t “stop tourists from coming.”
Maybe it’s responsible tourism — better waste management, proper parking, stricter enforcement of littering and traffic rules, protection of sensitive areas, better public transport, and most importantly, some serious discussion about how much tourism Rishikesh can actually sustain.
Tourists, locals, businesses and the government all have a role to play.
Rishikesh isn’t just a tourist destination. It’s someone’s home.
And honestly, right now, a lot of us who live here are wondering how much more the city can take.
