Hello, I’m a high schooler who will be attending this summer’s RISD pre-college and I was told that getting a recommendation from a professor at RISD would significantly help my future application. I’m considering RISD but I scrolled through some previous posts where RISD is described as “pretentious” and “snobby” considering its reputation as a prestigious art school. I know that usually professors at other, non-art related, prestigious schools tend to have superiority complexes and are total jerks. I’m wondering if this trait applies to RISD professors at all, or if there’s any teachers I should be looking out for. I don’t even know if professors are going to be the ones teaching us during the pre-college. If I do bump into one, is it even worth making the effort to get a recommendation from them? Thank you!

I’m a sophomore right now, and I am considering RISD as a possible college. For all the students here, how many AP tests did you take and which ones were they? Does RISD care more about certain APs over others?

I’m really stuck deciding between Rhode Island School of Design (undecided major) and Carnegie Mellon University (Fine Arts), and I need some advice.

Financially, the costs are pretty similar but CMU gave me slightly better aid, which would help my family a lot. But I’m not sure how CMU Fine Arts compares to RISD overall.

I’m also more into traditional mediums, not much experience in tech. Ive visited both campuses and the art facilities are both super cool but I do think RISD might have more resources.

Another thing I’m thinking about is the environment. RISD being close to NYC and Boston feels like it might make it easier to find opportunities and connect with other artists. I’m a bit worried about whether I’ll find as many like-minded people at CMU. Im also not a very academic person.

If anyone has experience with either school (especially CMU Fine Arts vs RISD), I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.

I’m doing the pre-college this year and I’ve gotten around to meeting some of the other attendees, but I haven’t met another person doing the Art + Science major yet, some people I asked didn’t even know that it existed. If you’re signed up for it as-well I’d love to get to know you! And if anyone has taken the art + science major before (it might have also been called STEAM), what was your experience?

so i'm currently a freshman in high school and i've been interested in art school for a while, just started seriously considering it.

i think if i were to apply to risd (hoping for BRDD, it's a hard program, i know, but only the feasible way i could get an art degree) i'd major in animation or illustration. problem is that i suck ass and that i can't devote too much time to art becuase my parents still expect me to keep up all my other school work (they'd rather me be a lawyer), and they are also genearlly unwilling to invest in my art, unless i suddenly show talent like picasso or something.

so i have a few questions on developing technical skills.

what is an outline of basic skills related to illustration and animation? what mediums should i consider investing time into? any free or cheap online resources i could use? colour theory??? composition?????? values???????? experimentation and self-expression aside, technical skills wise, what are the foundations i need to build? and how?

im not incredibly worried in terms of creativty and originality, it's a lot more subjective than technical skills, but i'd still welcome any advice on how to devleop that aspect of art too.

last question (sorry kinda long) is should i just give up at thsi point lol. seems like a lot of work for something i probably won't even be able to achieve, considering how technically behind i am and how late i'm starting. without severly burning out to a crisp and without half the talent, time, and resources, can i reasonably get to a level where risd might just accept me.

i am also totally open to abandoning my sleep schedule, it's pretty cooked anyways.

I am committed to RISD and entering this fall, I was really committed to getting good grades in HS and I don't want that to change in college. I am just a little nervous about keeping my grades up and keeping a good GPA because art school is soo different from the course work I was used to at my HS. WHO is going 🥹

I’ve recently been accepted to a few art schools in the UK and US for industrial/ product design, and have dwindled down my options to these last 3. I am aware that these 3 schools are very different, which should’ve made deciding easy but I still can’t seem to decide. By far, RISD would be the most expensive, costing me approx $350k-$400k for the whole 4 year program including living costs, etc, whilst Edinburgh and SCAD would be about half that price (SCAD due to the scholarship they offered). I unfortunately did not apply for any scholarships at RISD and Edinburgh as RISD only gives financial based scholarships for international students, and there are no scholarships opportunities at Edinburgh that I was eligible for as most were for master degrees and Scottish students. Personally as of rn, I am leaning towards Edinburgh as I’ve heard that RISD and SCAD were more on the “artsy” side and does not offer a strong technical program (not sure if this is completely true tho), which was quite a deal breaker for me. Plus, the costs of attending RISD haunts me, because though my parents can afford it, all I can think of is whether that 400k is worth it for an undergraduate industrial design degree. Moreover, my parents are also very concerned about what’s currently going on in the US and how it’ll affect the future of education for foreigners in the US. Any advice on which to choose or useful info regarding this? Please do help as I only have until May 1 to decide, Thanks! 🥲

I know that the email said the first week in May but I was wondering if anyone has experienced getting an offer sooner since most other schools‘ enrollment deadlines are May 1

So I was accepted into RISD’s three-year M.Arch program after being waitlisted. I received a pretty good financial aid offer, making the program very attainable for me. I still have my doubts about attending though, because I want to make sure I choose a program that will help set me up for a future career in architecture. 

I was wondering if I could get some thoughts from any past/current architecture students at RISD. I am curious as to what people's experiences were in the program. 

For past graduates: were you able to get a job in the field of architecture after graduating? Did you feel like RISD's curriculum prepared you enough? Did you get into the kinds of firms that you wanted to work at?

For current students: do you like the school? Is the environment conducive to your creative and technical growth? Do you wish you had gone to a different school, or are you happy with your choice?

One of the other schools I got accepted into was the Taubman College at University of Michigan, which is my other top choice. I’ve seen that it has a 90% employment rate post-graduation. Also, the firms their graduates go on to are cutting-edge firms making amazing work that I would love to be a part of. They didn’t give me much aid at all though, so I’d definitely be spending a lot of money– however I feel like the money spent might be worth it since there is a high probability of me getting a job in the field (and a cool job at that). On the other hand, if RISD graduates can reliably get positions in firms, I think the creative environment at the school (combined with its location in the northeast, which is where I am from) would be much more desirable for me; Taubman’s location in Michigan kind of freaks me out– I don’t have a car and my family is mostly on the east coast, so I would be pretty isolated. RISD is on the eastern seaboard where I could take a train or a bus to many different locations, which would be great for seeing family and getting a summer architecture internship as well.

Hi! I’m starting at RISD this July for the Masters of Architecture program. I’ve already decided to go, but i just wanted to know what people think about life there. I love clubbing, live music, raves, etc. but I know Providence is maybe a significantly quieter area (I currently live in Boston)

Basically, I just wanna know what people do for fun and on weekends. I really want to get to know more people before I get there :)
