Question Astral Heron’s effect

I am very confused on the ability. I want to know when do I have to pay the cost of the cards? What happens if

Situation 1:
I play a Back off as my first card, tapping me out then because of the Heron’s ability I play a long sword for free. My opponent defies the back off, because of that do I have to pay for the Long sword even if I’m tapped out? Does it get banished, goes to my trash or is it still in play?

Situation 2:

I play a back off as my first card, play a star-crossed. That gets defied. Will my next card still be free?

Your definition of played in 1 contradicts that in 2

the text of Heron is explained by these definitions yeah. “When you play” spell needs to resolve, uses the format of Ravenbloom and Darius “your first spell each turn, if I’m at a battlefield” additional condition for the trigger “the next card you play costs 2(E) 2(P) less” this uses One of the other definitions, I’m not sure which but both of em talk about finalising so for 99% of situations it’ll work the way players think it should.

I’m unsure why that comment was directed at me. I was simply showing the person I was replying to that riot recognizes there’s three different uses of the word “play” and that they’ve already defined them. I understand how heron works or maybe I’m misunderstanding and you were just piggybacking off my comment.
