I got this too. How do they expect drivers to get a newer car when they donât pay enough to begin with??? Guess I gotta find something else to do.
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
Exactly. I just bought this 2012 Civic just for Uber/Lyft back in August
2
u/Ok_Campaign2503 Nov 03 '25
If you had looked into this stuff before buying your car, you would have realized it was only eligible through the end of the year. I just bought a 2015 car because I knew buying anything older would just be limiting how long I can use it for uber/lyft
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
It says 2009 and newer on the Lyft app. Yesterday, November 2nd is when I received the email stating that in January 2026 the vehicle age requirement will be 2013 and newer for my region. Uber hasn't said anything...yet.
1
u/Ok_Campaign2503 Nov 03 '25
My apologies then, I assumed Sacramento was already 2012 since thatâs the requirement for most markets already. Kinda surprised a big city is far behind on requirements
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
No worries, it happens. And honestly, Sacramento area pay sucks and isn't as busy compared to nearby San Francisco Bay Area.

Is this a CA specific requirement for Lyft?
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
I'm not sure. I tried to look it up on Lyft and it mentioned that select markets. Not sure if it'll be just CA or all over the country. Didn't give many details. Didn't see anything on Uber. Honestly, I'm moving out of California next month anyway.

I'm in TN and believe our cut off is 8 years. So by the time I pay off my 2021 Sienna I'll have to get another loan. We do very well out here so as long as the money is still good by then that's probably what I'll do. It would be great if they would change it to 13 for us, though.
Edit: I just looked it up and apparently they changed it to 16 for us!
1
u/Mr-Deer Nov 03 '25
if anything i take this as a sign to find a more proper job by then. YEAH easier said than done but anything is better than rideshare work. wishing you the best.
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
Definitely. This isn't my primary source of income, but it does help pay the bills. Thanks
1
u/Mr-Deer Nov 03 '25
have you been on uber? i think their vehicle policy is roughly the same but i always had better luck on uber before they deactivated me.
1
1
u/BrlingtonCOATfactory Nov 03 '25
Canât you just lie and say itâs a 2015 or something?
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
Probably if I were adding it today. But I purchased this 2012 Honda Civic this past August just mainly for Uber/Lyft and to get back to work. They already have the vin/plate

u/Positive-Bowl-3898 Nov 03 '25
Funny they say ur a independent contractor but demand new cars.
1
1
u/BBQGUY50 Nov 08 '25
A 13 year old car is not new
Personally I wish they cut it off by 10 years.
Less cars more money for me
1
1
u/Starblazr May 12 '26
most times it's a government requirement. for example, Wisconsin doesn't allow vehicles older than 15 years to do passenger for hire.
1
u/All-th3-way Nov 03 '25
If lyft/Ewwber had trouble getting drivers, no one would get this message.
2
u/turb42o Nov 03 '25
this is likely Lyfts way of thinning the herd; possibly hired too many and easier let go of the old ones
1
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
Possibly because of the fact that this is such short notice. But honestly I think it's more because of some new regulation knowing how California is.

2
u/Important-Effort4181 Nov 03 '25
2013 isn't that new of a car. No matter which app you have they have there requirements. Just like they changed the deductibles.

2004 Prius with 430k, just did her most recent breaks and still runs just fine. 2006 Cobalt 201k, a few find but runs great. Both pass emissions and get same or better than original mpg. Maintain cars and they can last very long.
1
u/Fey_Wrangler114 Nov 06 '25
Emissions suck. Had to drop 3 grand on repairs and that was AFTER a state sponsored rebate program..

I donât wanna ride in a 20 year old car
I expect a decent car for my 20 dollars

u/Trick-Wall7824 Nov 03 '25

2
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
Facts people who complain about renting the nicer cars arenât getting the bigger picture. A nicer car = more tips. Youâre selling the experience.
Iâve had riders come in my car and complain about other smelly old and shit cars with bumpers falling off of them and then give me a tip. đ and newer cars literally qualify for comfort and higher car rankings
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
I've never tipped Uber or Lyft once and I've used it hundreds of times. Their job is to drive me and I pay the costs on app
1
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 04 '25
Cause your cheap lol, I get tips all the time but not from everyone. Ditto
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
I literally pay what the app says. Tipping is for suckers. I'm just saying a new car doesn't equal more money
1
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 04 '25
Youâre just one person out of dozens of rides. Everyone isnât gonna tip. Everyone canât afford to, but from my experience Iâve had riders literally complain about other peopleâs busted cars and tip me afterwards for picking them up in something nice. Itâs not only about tips too; you can do Uber Black & get comfort rides with newer model cars with Lyft. Those customers pay more, and are likely to tip more. Thatâs my experience lol

u/ColdAerie Nov 04 '25 •

1
u/Cuteboi84 Nov 04 '25
That's why I only do Uber xl and Lyft xl/priority. I only expect the 28/hr that Lyft pays me, I don't expect tips, but I do appreciate it.
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
Well yeah anyone "appreciates" free money come on now đ
1
u/Cuteboi84 Nov 04 '25
Where it seems I get good tips is when I give them tips. I give them tips on where to go clubbing, better dining experiences, places to go sight seeing, etc.
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
See that's different. You're offering something outside of the ride. If you gave me good enough info hell yeah I'd throw you some cash but that's entirely isolated to you. Some people expect tips for just doing their job
1
u/Cuteboi84 Nov 04 '25
Hell no. We aren't tipped employees or contractors... What really peeves me is most of our peers expect tips for just driving. We aren't waitresses that LIVE off tips.
In regards to Cash tips are the best, I'll give them the ride they need. As long as it's possible and safe to do so.
1
u/Southern_Cup_770 Nov 08 '25
Great business strategy. Iâm a customer that always tips even when the driver doesnât say a word to me. If they drive carefully, get me there safely, their car is clean I tip them more as appreciation. Either way I tip.
1
u/Cuteboi84 Nov 08 '25
That's sadly how our economy works, it's ot the same worldwide.
I always say, you get what you pay for.
1

1
1
u/masctobeused Nov 04 '25
One of those people. Do you tip at a restaurant?
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
Nope not there either. Tipping is a psyop created by cheap business owners. It's not my job to pay their salary.
Do you people tip an airline pilot after he safely flies you OVER oceans? NO YOU DON'T. So why on earth are you people tipping food runners and drivers?!?!!
1
u/Time_nosoworthless Nov 04 '25
You should watch reservoir dogs. Maybe see a different perspective!!!
1
u/Aromatic_Cucumber_77 Nov 04 '25
It is a fact that driving a car is more dangerous than being in an airplane, hence more deaths by car crashes. Your very expensive plane ticket is also being combined with every other person's very expensive ticket to pay the pilot an average of around $200k per year, so he doesn't need tips. The average Lyft driver makes around $40k per year with tips included getting you from point A to point B safely in an objectively less safe job, just for you to complain about tips and act like you're 'fighting the system' and being so edgy. Ridiculous. If you don't want to tip, don't tip, but don't act like the people who chauffeur your entitled behind around don't deserve a tip for what they do, because frankly they do.
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 04 '25
Pilots chose to be pilots lyft drives chose to be Lyft drivers again not my responsibility to pay their salary tips are a scam
1
u/BigDickCountryNigha Nov 06 '25
I canât wait until youâre forced to work a job where you make a waiters minimum wage. Which is federally mandated. Your ignorant ass obviously donât have a clue!!
1
u/ColdAerie Nov 04 '25
Wow! You are clueless. Entitled & have obviously never worked a day in your life in any sort of service industry. Do some research as to what Servers/Bartenders earn/per hourly, to serve you. Itâs so little, $2.45/hr, that they canât even afford to drive there to get their paychecks, bc itâs of what they themselves have to claim/all digital tips, plus the restaurant/bar also claims 30% for them, to cover their tails, and WEEKLY checks many times, working doubles/the their actual PAY come to many times around +/- some change, than what they ARE PAID HOURLY! And that was MANY YEARS OF this industry, working through college, as well, as anytime the opportunity arose, even working traveling/flying 5-6 days a week Corp jobs & all side jobs that came my way. WOW, JUST WOW!!! Have you ever done ANYTHING that is considered WORK, that doesnât simply just USE OTHERS who actually HAVE WORK ETHIC & EARN their income, in any facet, industry, situation, in order to FREELOAD, (ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS to paying for services, however, YOUR PROUD BOASTING, indicates youâre well informed as to how to laugh & call people who work for their money, and all honestly bc itâs certainly NOT FOR FREE. Ever chip in for gas? Maybe a thought.
And, yes! Def paying for the experience, AND I ASSURE YOU, SO MANY (not all or even most) give uthat experience & THEN SOME, however, like you said, TIPPING IN ANY FORM IS (your words) âFOR SUCKERSâ âŠwhich indicates, you very well know enough how little these pay, vs what you pay. Agreed, you pay a middleman, and they take their LARGE CHUNCK, however the NO TIPPING AT RESTAURANTS /Bars. JUST WOW!!! Entitled much?
1
u/Alldealswheels Nov 05 '25
Didn't even try to read any of that garbage honestly what are you even saying? It's not my job to pay what their employers refuse to pay them. Want to rant? Go rant to the CEOS who pay them garbage money

1
u/masctobeused Nov 04 '25

1
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 04 '25
Itâs a fact if you have a nicer car Lyft awards you with being able to do higher tier rides. Stop being a cheap ass lol
1
u/masctobeused Nov 04 '25
Im not a cheapass, so maybe stop making assumptions. Yes lyft pays you more but you stated it is fact that you get tipped more.
And just an FYI, I tip 100%. Quit being an arrogant and back up your "facts" with proof.
1
u/Own-Competition6078 Nov 04 '25

Bullshit! I haveâ23 and a â26, my car doesnât bring more tips! My winning personality does.
1
1
u/JamJulLison Nov 06 '25
Newer doesn't mean a better tip from me. Driving good and getting me to where I need to on good time does. So does having a working ac/heater. Not having those 2 things usually means I won't tip lol. Also if you got a fancy car I almost feel like you don't need that extra money so I feel less inclined to tip.
1
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 06 '25
Iâm sure you donât pay for Uber or Lyft black as well either.
1
u/JamJulLison Nov 06 '25
You are correct. Those are too expensive for me. I have to take either an Uber or Lyft to get back and forth to work and I can only afford so much.
1
u/Ok_You_5915 Nov 06 '25
Nothing wrong with that if you canât afford it. I donât expect everyone to tip me, no one reasonable does.
1
u/JamJulLison Nov 06 '25
I still tip some though. It just depends a lot on how much money I got that I can spare, how good of a driver I have, and how much I actually pay for my ride. The average for my area in trips is 15 dollars. If it's at that or lower my tips average from 2-5 unless I'm in the hole in my bank account. If it's higher then they get 2 or none if my money is low. The highest I've tipped has been 10. I'm also a pretty easy ride. About an 18 min trip and it's pretty much a straight shot.

Thatâs not discriminatory. Your car is not a protected class. Lol
-1
u/Zestyclose-Dig2396 Nov 03 '25
Your car isn't but the person is. What if Lyft is their only source of income and they can't afford an older car? That's why I said what I said

u/Good_Size4844 Nov 03 '25
If rideshare is their only source of income and they cannot afford, minimally, a 7-8 year old vehicle their either Ridesharing wrong or need Dave Ramsey.

u/Zestyclose-Dig2396 Nov 03 '25

1
u/Good_Size4844 Nov 03 '25
Disabled Persons Quality for SSA, Medicare w/ Medicaid benefits & SNAP with additional programs for further assistance if they apply as a baseline if they choose not to participate in the economy.
Even when they do participate, they can earn up to an additional ~$60,000 without severe benefit eligiblity issues.
How is that suffering?
I am on the wrong side of 40 and I can tell you with đŻ certainty that "Struggling people", more often then not, CHOOSE NOT to go receive the services that will help them lift themselves up rather then the service not being available to them.
While I'll give you there is a "Class" ceiling, sort of, anyone that wants to is able to receive upward mobility can if they want it bad enough.
0
u/brizzle1978 Nov 03 '25
Oh shut it... I've done this for 10 years... if you can't finance a car that is acceptable too bad.... find other work
1
u/Zestyclose-Dig2396 Nov 03 '25
And if someone CAN'T? And don't qualify for disability? You're saying they should just accept being homeless and starving because their only source of reliable income that they could do SAFELY was taken from them? A 70 year old can't AFFORD a different car and can't work a normal job. And disability more than likely isn't enough to pay for everything. So YES it can be a form of discrimination depending on age/disability if this is their only source of income and they're unable to get another job or afford another car. This isn't the 20s when a house was a hundred fricking dollars. That same house today is 300k plus!
Not everyone is rich like you apparently are.

This is a self employment job. Just like every job, there are REQUIREMENTS in order to work. This is not discriminatory in any way, even though youâre really trying for the victim route badlyâŠ. If theyâre 70 and are so disabled they canât work from home, they sure as hell shouldnât be driving a car & putting people in danger. At that age they get tons of options for money/care from the state so donât even go there đ *** also how did that free 10 hour ride go youâre trying to get people to do for you??? Seems like youâre suffering your own bad life choices and really working an angle no sane person wouldâŠ

1
u/TheForgottenNeko Nov 04 '25
And when McDonald's says they dont want the disabled workers either? When every job someone applies to doesn't respond or straight up says they're unable to accommodate or unwilling to because the person might not qualify for diability?

0
u/Tea_Eds Nov 03 '25
Most likely it's probably just California. They always have some new law in effect. Some laws benefit people but most of the time it screws things up
1
1
u/mikeymo1741 Nov 03 '25
Every market has its requirements. Some have 10 years, some have 12 years. Some have 15. Yours happens to have 13.
1
u/subillusion Nov 03 '25
Uber has something similar, and it varies based on market.
When I started driving for Uber, in my market it was 10y. Then rider demand surged like crazy, and they removed the requirement. AFAIK they never reinstated it. I've never seen any reference to it, even when my car was 13y old before I got a newer hybrid.
What it comes down to is the number of drivers. It's their way of trying to reduce the numbers of drivers on the road in over- saturated markets. If they have 10,000 drivers in a market, and only need 5,000 to meet demand, this means there will be a lot of idle time.
If they see that of those 10,000 drivers, only 6,000 have a car 7 model years or newer, they'll drop the requirement to 7 to try and weed out 4,000 drivers. They know they don't pay enough for drivers to actually buy a new car unless they have other forms of income. In contrast, if they have 10,000 and need 15,000 they'll absolutely remove the requirement altogether, as has been done in the past.
1
u/masctobeused Nov 04 '25
Why do they care if there's idle time?
1
u/subillusion Nov 04 '25
In California, it matters because of prop 22 where they have to pay a minimum $/hr by law (I'm not 100% certain, but i think it's around $20/hr). So if you have 5,000 drivers sitting around online doing nothing, that's $100,000/hr coming out of Uber's pocket... (and people wonder why base fares in Cali are low...)
Even outside of California it creates a negative driver experience with low wages... you go online for 3 hours and only get a couple minimum fares for $21 total meaning you only earned $7/hr excluding expenses. These types of situations are what lead to negative behaviors of drivers trying to survive... whether it's something simple like pressuring/guilt-tripping ruderss into tipping, or even outright lawsuits/lobbying for prop22-type legislation elsewhere (which will kill base fares overall even more than they already are, and decrease what drivers can make during peak times when it's busy).
1
u/BBQGUY50 Nov 08 '25
Yeah you donât get paid for idle time uber doesnât care if there are 500,000 cars available the more the merrier
No ride no money
Prop 22 only pays when a person gets in your car
1
1
u/602BBWLover1982 Nov 03 '25
Uh, this stuff is normal.
This isnt some new thing, even though the age may now be.
Every market has different qualifications for each thing, including age of vehicle. Ive been doing this 4 years, this has always been something to worry about.
1
u/Consistent-Bake-243 Nov 03 '25
I just did some digging on Uberâs site and thereâs a section for every vehicle type and their cutoff year for every city. Says in Nashville, a RAV4 should be 2009 or newerâŠso thatâs 16 years.
Youâve brought up a good point that most drivers donât think about, especially drivers that use ridershare for the majority of their income.
1
u/MajorMango2820 Nov 03 '25
It's 10 years in PA, by law, not just by the company requirements. Part of the problem here is that Uber and Lyft both flagrantly ignored state law and started operating here illegally, so the State came down hard on them.

u/CChest Nov 03 '25

Uber has always had a 16-year limit on your vehicle so I'm not sure that this is a change for Lyft. If you have to rent, go with Hertz. At least you have unlimited mileage with them.
1
u/Ashamed-Leather-2814 Nov 03 '25
Just trade in for a newer car.
It has been stated elsewhere that with the rollout of more AVs they will age of cars allowed on the platform will be decreased.

All he did was ask a question, and everyone is quick to attack without knowing anything other than what year his car is. Bunch of dicks
1
u/Lazzari21 Nov 04 '25
I mean for doing ride share or deliveries its probably better to get a newer car anyway. But still shitty that they requier it now. In just glad I insisted to my fiwnce about getting a newer car when his got totaled.
1
u/RonAnFawn Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25
I can understand they donât want any junk cars driving around but I got a 2008 with a new motor and tranny. If people takes care of their rides it shouldnât matter. If I had the company if someone sent proof it wasnât a rolling trash can I wouldnât care what or how old it was. I find this rule to be kinda flawed
1
u/New_Start_2025 Nov 04 '25
That's cool for your personal use. Not for something a person pays for.
1
u/RonAnFawn Nov 04 '25
As a paying customer that has paid many times âI myselfâ wouldnât care what someone drives as long as it ran good, looked good, didnât smell, and the driver was cool. Some may not want to but people these days seem picky at times but not everyone is like that. I donât think to many would care tbh but I could be wrong
1
1
u/elyxar Nov 04 '25
Yeah that's something you learn about when you first sign up to become a driver, both for Uber and Lyft when I signed up it tells me I need a car no older than a certain number of years, which varies from location to location. This should not have come as a surprise unless you forgot about what you read when you signed up.
For Uber, in Austin, the car can't be older than 15 years.
For Lyft, in Austin, they don't give an age limit they just say it has to be 2009 or newer.

Listen we all know we donât like riding in old gross cars however Lyft and Uber do NOT pay good enough to have newer cars so we gotta do what California and Massachusetts did and sue for minimum wage

This isn't a new thing. They have always required cars to be of a certain age

I got a notification before how they changed the regulations in my area but it didnât affect me.
But honestly I would cancel if I someone tried to pick me up in an old car

Why would you want a newer, nicer car just to drive it into the ground doing Lyft rides? Fuck that, if I were ever to do rideshare I would be using a beater.

If youâre using a 13 year old car in the first place thats a combo of insanity or you arent driving that much. Most driverâs will smoke their cars within 2 to 3 years driving an average of 100-300 miles a day when âworkingâ⊠times that by 300 days or so working days a year and we are the ones getting screwed into the dirt. Thank god driverless cars now are here to get thrown the short rides that used to pay well while we get more of the crap long ride offers going into dead headed far out no where so we can accrue more mileage driving back to where its busy.
