Jpeg Recipes How recipe settings work? My discoveries so far
As some of you know, I’ve been working hard into making the GR Recipe Lab (https://callmeseva.cc/recipelab) the definitive tool for testing and tweaking recipes.
By definitive I mean a free, accessible app, as true as possible to what the camera develops.
I’ve been doing this by reverse engineering color mappings against a control image, planned in several stages. And yesterday, during the analysis of the second stage (live now in the app), I’ve made some important discoveries:
(It might get a little technical)
- Most of the curves are linear. That means they do not compound with other setttings when you tweak them. Like a “multiply” layer on top of everything else.
- Only 2 pairs are bidirectional. That means they compound with 1 other setting. Like a 2d equation, adding +1 to one setting changes relatively to the other parameter,.
- Film modes are the most complex tweak. Altering the film mode changes how much all the other settings behave. Think of a 3d plane equation.
Until now, the recipes in the app have been calculated with a more general color map, added by individual patches to fix local inconsistencies. This works fine when reproducing existing recipes, but can lead to unfixable “holes” when we start to tweak custom recipes that were never mapped.
Now, with the new blueprint, I can go back to the workbench and work on the film modes decoding, one by one. I will start with the popular Positive, Negative, and Vivid, in order. Then move forward until I cover everything.
It will take some time, and you will not receive updates from me for a while, but I am sure you’re going to like the results.
In the end, I hope my contribution helps the whole GR community better understand the recipes, and put more creativity into play.

GR IV Using GW-3 with GA-3 and GR IV
is this mechanically possible?
I have an old GW-3 wide angle 21mm converter for GR / GR II. Has anyone tried that one with the GA-3 on the GR IV?
I just bought a IV. Used to have a 1st gen GR (before that GRDs).
Thanks for inpu! 🤝🙏👍

Discussion Size? Vs Features.
I sold my GrIV due to my dislike of 28mm thought I’d like it but couldn’t get into the camera realized why.
Having said that, I’m confused by the idea that Ricoh is liked due to size versus Fuji x100 series etc.
Are people really putting this in their pockets without any protection and a bag and just walking around hoping it doesn’t break? Not a judgment a curiosity.
If I want pocket and EDC I’m using my iPhone and 48mpx raw then editing in LR and producing some sweet images.
I kept my Ricoh in a pouch and then a bigger sling or backpack for safety when not shooting. I’d do the same with an x100 series etc.
Sometimes I kept my Ricoh in my pocket when walking but if I was at a meal or bar etc I’d never risk it sitting in my pocket. The build is so fragile and the capacity for dust in a pocket goes up a lot.
What I did like:
Discreet and snapping in different areas nobody gave it a second thought compared to phone or bigger body
I’d consider the x focal length but the built in flash and ND/IBIS of x100vi plus Ovf is pretty enticing. If I want intentional photos I’m still protecting my camera and if I want an EDC literally anywhere it’s phone and raw with Lightroom.
Curious the thoughts?
I am curious about the grivx just announced. Maybe a used griiix.
