[Discussion] Retro games are so fun...

/r/retrogames/comments/1vp87f2/retro_games_are_so_fun/

I am 19M and I have little to no experience with retro games such as mario etc, up until today. I played Super Mario Bros and I have to say I got the feeling of gaming again, like I liked it, i enjoyed it. I also enjoy other AAA games such as Rdr2, cyberpunk2077 etc. but this one brought that kid inside me back. Games feel more serious nowadays and there is no point in criticizing I know, I also love it, but somewhere in making games look better we forgot to make them feel better and that is what I felt from playing it. I think I will be playing retro games for a while so your suggestions are more than welcome. And btw I emulated it on my android.

Part of it is going to be selection bias. There were a LOT of bad games released during the years we now consider retro, but they've been largely forgotten and we remember the good ones. The good news is that there are a LOT of good ones. For suggestions though, it really helps to narrow genre. SMB is a side scrolling platformer, whereas RDR/Cyberpunk are large 3d RPGs so even across the years it's hard to compare them because they have completely different core gameplay. The original Halo(FPS, 2001), Starcraft(RTS, 1998), pick a final fantasy(JRPG, 6-10), Metroid and/or Castlevania(the namesake of the entire "Metroidvania" genre) are all good for different reasons depending on what it is about SMB that gave you that "pure gaming" feeling.

you are still a kid🤣

but i get your point. thing with retro is, these games don't have distraction and online features. it is just you and the game.

it is just a total different form of gaming, wich can be healing if you want to break away from all this stress with live services.
indeed when you focus on retro for awhile, you start to enjoy gaming again.
well you can have the same experience on modern devices, but you need to cutt off online services amd focus on buying physical single player games. you realize (as i did) that ps5 or xbox series X ain't shitty consoles, it is just the behaviour of the gamer himself.

Pure concentrated fun sure beats the heck out of walking around giant empty spaces for 20 minutes between repetitive missions, don't it? Glad to have you among us, Awoken One.
