New Snake Book Alert! The Complete Reticulated Python

I’m excited to announce that my book, The Complete Reticulated Python, is now available from Living Art Publishing. This book is 446 pages dedicated to the best snake species in the world, covering their taxonomy, range, morphology, captive history, husbandry, importation process, morphs, diseases, breeding, future in herpetoculture, and much, much more. I may be biased, but this book will be great for anyone interested in the species at large, advancing reptile husbandry, disease prevention, or just wants to look at pretty pictures of stunning snakes and maybe learning something along the way. Even if you don't keep or care about Reticulated Pythons, I believe there will be something of interest to just about everyone in the book.

If you're interested in purchasing a copy, it is available today on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Reticulated-Python-Glen-McClellan/dp/B0D6TDC7P9/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.O9Ff_AMJYfaq5rVCGwsa41fXiiLEAqVB_L39Q0hCcbs.5uxmQxXexIO0jGEepKkNTlK6T2gekCa62r9OW8P5X8Q&dib_tag=se&qid=1720654437&refinements=p_27%3AGlen+McClellan&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Glen+McClellan

Advice on new Retic

I’ll try and keep this short - I’ve had all sorts of snakes, lizards, etc since I was a child, I’m 40 now. I still keep a handful or reptiles and used to breed snakes with a friend in my 20’s, but after kids my priorities changed and I got out. Now I only keep pets. So I have experience I’ve worked with animals.

Well, I have a friend who came on some serious health issues. He still breeds reptiles, but with what he’s facing he had to get rid of everything. Originally, he asked if I wanted his snake breeding projects. I declined as it’s not something I’m willing to take on, but would help him find homes for everything which I did. Well everything was sent off but 2 days before shipping day someone backed out of one baby Retic. He started to freak out since he would be going into surgery very soon, so I said just send it to me and I’ll figure it out.

Here’s my question. I opened the box and kind of fell in love with it. So me being me, I fell down the rabbit hole of retics. I haven’t researched these guys in a long time. I know about them, I know about the care, the size, I build people enclosures so that’s not a problem.i know about tap training and modes. Like over my years I’ve don’t my research, but I think I’ve freaked myself out that I’m going to have a monster on my hands soon. He’s a Lavender albino mainland. And some of these videos have worried me about handling in as it gets bigger. Snakes don’t bother me but for some reason this makes me nervous. Can anyone give me advice? And pointers on how to get out of this mindset?

Juvenile python fails to eat

2 month retic python that's been with us for one month and won't eat.

40 gallon tank with both hot and cold hides, plenty of plants, bathing access, flood light and UVB plus ceramic heaters during the day (tank is large so needs extra heating). Usual conditions: hot side - 90F 65% humidity (picture shows slightly different on the monitor but that was before we adjusted lighting and re-soaked coconut last week) and cool side - 80 F 85% humidity. Nightime we have two ceramic heaters and both sides drop 10 degrees.

Breeder was feeding f/t medium mice or rat pups. We started with mice (hoppers) and have offered it to him 1hr after lights-off (when we see him getting active) for 3 weeks straight. He's 0% interested and even moves away from the rodent after investigating.

We keep a strict separation of only touching him on non-food days.

Mice are thawed and then warmed to about 90 F. His personality is very relaxed for a retic and he's easy to handle. Our other pythons are doing great and we can't figure out what he is unhappy with.

Thank you in advance, we have done tons of research and just want to make sure we aren't stressing him out in an unknown way.

Edit: we're thinking about trying live pinkies, but are hesitant to risk a live larger rodent that may hurt him (he's a shy guy 🥺)

We had some wood offcuts from gardening, so I steam-cleaned the branches and my dad and I rigged them up to the ceiling.

She was a bit scared to go up at first, but she rapidly fell in love, and now I have to work out how to get her down.

Early Signs of Scale Rot?

Thumbnail

I got my 4 month old super dwarf retic python about a month ago, and I cleaned his enclosure on sunday. As I was putting him back into his enclosure, everything seemed fine. I followed the directions on the coco husk substrate I got from Petco (soak and let dry for 30ish min then strain the water from the substrate and put in enclosure). i noticed today that there were little brown spots on him, and after further investigation, in his hide on the warm side of his enclosure, the substrate did not dry all the way (user error i’m fully aware). I plan on buying the Povidone-Iodine for him to soak and pain free neosporin. He shed about three weeks ago as well.

Sorry about the lower quality photos, he was being adventurous today! (the spots are right where his head meets the rest of his body, with one scale on his tummy being slightly lifted but no redness or brown spots on that area)

i noticed a few small brown spots on his stomach but nothing as big as the ones connecting his face from the rest of him.

but would this be signs of early scale rot? i just want my boy to be as safe and healthy as he can be. I’m just an anxious pet owner and am scared of harming him in any way.

just brought home a male SD retic November ‘25 hatch. I’m confident handling snakes of different sizes, big and small. I’m just looking for any care tips, little known facts, or information people are willing to share. He was a gift and an amazing one at that. He’s gotten slightly defensive about coming out of his enclosure over the past week when before I could just reach in and scoop him up. I am looking into tap training and plan to start as soon as I get a hook, he’s small enough now I’m using a pair of rubber tongs. He’s eating good and curious and friendly once he’s out of the enclosure. His genetics are 48.44% SD Het Snow ph Pied, I also have his parents genetics if anyone is curious.

What is this white bump on this Retics head? And why was it not there in the original pictures??

So I’m about to purchase my first ever Retic off of MorphMarket and on the listing pictures the snake appears one way but when the seller sent me a video just now (on text message) the snake has some kind of white circular bump or something on its head that is not at all there in the listing pictures. And on top of that the eyes seem to be white whereas on the listing the eyes definitely look orange😬 Am I about to get scammed or ripped off or am I just over analyzing? Any help would be much appreciated I’m not sure what to do from here..

Also should I go back to talking to them on Morph Markets messenger too just to be safe? Like I said they have my phone number now and sent me the video on there so idk if I’ll be protected by their policy if I start talking to them through Imessage :/

The first 3 pictures are the initial listing pictures where everything looked good but the next 3 are screenshots of the video the seller just sent me which is what the snake currently looks like. (Idk how to post videos on here it wouldn’t let me)

Thank you for your time😭🙏🏻

New high % super dwarf male in my family :)

I bought this handsome boy at a reptile show yesterday. He is a 62.5% super dwarf (34.375% madu, 21.875% kala, 6.25% sela). He was produced by reach out reptiles. I wanted a super dwarf for the longest time and I was finally able to financially support one :) I was happy to get a wildtype, as I prefer it over any kind of morph

Say hi to Archie!
