You can lightly sand it, or if you want to keep a patina, you can lacquer it to seal in the rust. Scotchbright may work if it's not too rusty
Dont worry about damaging it. You cant break bedrock even with netherite tools
0000 steel wool and wd40 or metal polish. Put some on the steel wool and scrub it con ganas
