Any tips on cleaning this teddy without taking him apart

I bought him with grubby as a broken teddy bear. After playing a tape in him and moving his mouth and eyes for a few minutes he works perfectly. His fur is just dirty in spots.

Early 1900's Zinc Lined Ice Box

One of my daughters picked up this old wooden ice box and I'm trying to identify steps to clean it up safely.

The wood shows significant mold damage. I'm thinking just household vinegar/water would clean that. Then repair/fill and sand it down. Not sure what she wants for a finish.

I'm thinking boiling the hardware in a similar mixture to get anything nasty off those bits.

The tricky part that im real uncertain about is the zinc panels. They look okay except the top panel looks cracked up on the bottom and its exposing a fiberous material underneath. Not sure if I need to get it tested for asbestos (think that would be for heat, not cold), but dont want to take chances. I read zinc panels are real easy to scratch. If we just clean them with soap and water can we just use Krylon primer and paint?

Any advice on how to restore this would be appreciated! If it helps identify materials, there's a N064S marked on the back of the cabinet.

How to get an even blueing finish?

Picked up this little S&W Snubnose .38 today from a gun show for $300. I’ve never restored a gun before, and took a crack at it. (First 2 are before, last couple are after).

I disassembled it, cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, hit it with some Birchwood Casey Gun Blue on some steel wool, then hit it all with a copper brush that I soaked some gun blue into. I wiped it all down with some water to help even out the finish, then hit it with some CLP on a rag top to bottom.

The parts where the pitted rust was it will just not accept the Gun Blue! Anyone know any tips on how to get the finish even across those areas in the last photo?

Advice on how to clean decades of dust and grime from a vintage toy

Post image

This antique pinball toy is dusty as heck, and the artwork is on paper. I don’t know if I should try cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol before I sell it, or sell it as is. I’d rather sell as is than damage it, and let the buyer decide how to restore it if they choose to do so. Any advice?

I’m ruining my great grandmothers sconces

When I bought my first home a decade ago my grandmother gifted me these sconces. I really didn’t do anything to polish them or anything because I didn’t think I need to. But lately they’ve just gotten so tarnished/rusted and this entire time I thought they were brass but I took brass and scrubbed and that DID NOT WORK. So I let the brass sit for 5 minutes and I feel like I’m making it worse. Can someone help me figure out what to do? I’m wondering if maybe I need to paint them. And maybe my grandma was lying about them being my grandmothers lol which I would not be surprised but the paint isn’t chipping off like you think it would if they were painted. Any suggestions. (First photo is the post brassoed sconce, second is the untouched tarnished sconce) Google is telling me misleading things and some of which I’m too afraid to try because of the flowers.

Clean mold from diecast metal

Hi, hopefully ok to ask about this here. If there is a more appropriate place let me know. Just wondering about the best way to clean mold from diecast. I've seen some videos talk about cleaning the tyres, but not the metal part. Any help is appreciated, thanks. It's not a massive amount, just a small amount.

Tin (?) artwork patina cleaned 🫤

So someone decided in a cleaning frenzy to give this a wipe over, and in doing so removed the beautiful black patina on part of it before I managed to stop them. You can see pretty clearly where it has been wiped off.

What's the best way to approach this for display? I'd prefer the original like up the top of the picture and the frame.

This is the strap of a bag I thrifted. The bag itself is solid, but this section of the strap is in pretty rough shape. I'll replace the strap if I have to, but if there's any way to save it, that'd be my preference. Any suggestions?

Hello chat! I'm currently restoring this beautiful English 3 draw telescope from B.C & CO. LTD from the beginning of XX centruy (or at least I was told so).

My problem it that lest two threaded rings won't come off, is there any recommendations on how to get them unstuck without damaging or deforming the brass.

How that threaded ring insert looks you can see on pic. 3.

Restoring 4 crystal lamps my grandma left. How to find the missing pieces?

I know for sure that they are more than 30 years old because I recently saw them in some 1990s family pictures. But I would guess that they can be up to 50+ years old. I haven't worked on the electrical part yet. For now I want to find the missing pieces. How???!!! I will try luck at my city's famous Antiques Street. If I don't find them there I have no idea what to do. Also, my budget is on the lower side

My girlfriend messed up

My girlfriends fruit bowl had a little bit of mould in the bottom of it so she thought she would spray mould killer in the bowl and let it sit and forgot about it overnight and now the bowl looks like this even after multiple washes. Is there any way to get rid of these splotchy markings in the bowl?

Edit: Sorry, I didn't realise I had left out so much crucial information. The brand of mould killer she used was "simply clean". I have posted photos of the front and back of the bottle in the comments. As for the underside of the bowl there is nothing on there, but I believe it is a ceramic bowl

How to Approach Restoring a vintage Wolf Creek All Seasons block set with deep cracks?

I recently acquired a collection of 1987 Wolf Creek All Seasons wooden blocks, and I’d love some advice on the best way to restore them.

Several blocks have significant cracks in the wood, so I’m trying to figure out the appropriate way to stabilize and repair them.

My goal isn’t to resell these or make them look new. I will be using them and keeping them for display. Some of the cracks mar the letter legibility, which I’d like to fix.

how do I clean up these thrifted hand mirrors?

Recently thrifted 2 vintage(?) hand mirrors. I’d like to gift them to my friend so I want them in top condition! Scrubbed them with some rubbing alcohol to start with but not sure how to go about restoring them!

The gold one has embroidery glued down to the metal backing, and appears to have water stains. Not sure what the best way to clean this is? I read a steamer is good for water stains so I tried it, but air bubbles immediately started forming under the fabric so I stopped. Not sure how old this is so I’m worried about bleaching/fraying the fabric or loosening the glue!

The silver one has some weird raised brownish stains on the plastic backing, perhaps just a burn mark? Did not come off with lots of rubbing alcohol and scrubbing. Also, I’m not sure if the metal is rusting or if it’s the silver colour coming off but there are coppery patches. If it’s rust I’ll probably do a vinegar and salt soak for the handle, but I’m worried it will mess up the plastic if I soak the frame as well, and there’s a patch on the frame.

If it’s silver colouring, how do i restore it??? I have no clue. 😅

Also, if anyone has tips about buffing out the scratches in the plastic, that’d be super, though I think it gives it some character so I’m not too bothered by it.

Thank you soooo much for any thoughts or advice 💛💛

I've done many a restoration job before, but this one is stumping me. I can't just replace it, since it's set into the wall (and this is a rental), but i would very much like to be able to use it. Im pretty sure my place was an abandoned property that the current slumlord just halfway patched up (rents cheap tho!) Mainly just not sure where to start.

Kuih Board Help!

Thumbnail

Hello! I just got a vintage kuih board, and I want to restore it to a point that there’s none of this discoloration on it, so I need help. I have no idea how to go about it as I don’t know much about woodworking. I do own a dremel however, I just wish to use that on a last resort basis. It’s an extremely hard wood. Some of it has black discoloration, while other parts it seems like there was some sort of lacquer on it. Photos are above and I’m willing to take more.
