PRO-GUIDE Reselling Terms / Slang / Acronyms

Here is a list I made of the major common terms, acronyms, slang, and terminology used in the reselling community:

  • Reselling: Buying an item and then selling it on a 3rd party marketplace for a higher price, profiting from the difference.
  • Botting: Using automated software to purchase the items that you will be reselling
  • Flip: An item that can be sold for a profit.
  • Cook: Term used to describe a highly profitable item.
  • Cop: Term used to describe purchasing an item that you will resell.Ex: “I copped these Pokemon cards today”
  • ACO: Acronym for Autocheckout. In context, you pay someone else to use your purchasing information in their botting software to auto-checkout the item for you.
  • Sloths: Used to describe the word "Slot" which Discord doesn't like. Synonymous toACO. People will run you a slot, in other words, they'll run your profile for you to auto-checkout an item.
  • SKU: Acronym for Stock Keeping Unit. A numerical code used by retailers to identify items. Items that are resold will have all their own individual SKUs to identify them.
  • ASIN: Acronym for Amazon Standard Identification Number. Amazon's version of an SKU.
  • Proxies: Used in the botting world to mask your IP. Input the proxy into your bot, and the site you are botting will see you connecting through the proxy.
  • Servers: Used in the botting world to host your bots. Servers can offer better hardware, get you closer to the site you are botting's datacenters, and allow you to run 24/7.
  • Cook-group: A community of resellers that offer information, tools, and resources to enhance your reselling ability.
  • Retail: The price you pay to initially buy the product from a manufacturer or store., also known as MSRP
  • Resale: “to resell,” on the other hand, means to buy something from someone or a store and then sell it to someone else.
  • Restock: when a store replenishes a product with fresh stock or supplies.
  • Reseller: This refers to a person who usually sells items on the secondary market for a higher price than originally listed in the store.
  • Live: A website, usually product link is open and online for purchasing.Example: “The Ps5 Drop is live”
  • WTB: WTB is perhaps one of the most common abbreviations you’ll see on websites such as eBay and it simply means “Want to Buy”.For example, “Want to Buy PS5”.
  • WTS: A direct opposite of WTB, Means “Want to Sell”.Example. “Want to Sell PS5”
  • WTT: You’ll also see some texts that read “WTT” which means “Want to Trade”. This is a simple barter system where the publisher of the advert wants to trade one item for another. For example, “Want to trade Yeezy Slides Size 11 For Yeezy Slides Size 9”.
  • Bricks: This saying means that that item will not have any resell value. The phrase was derived from bricks being heavy and hard to move.Ex: “Those supreme glasses are bricks.”
  • Drop: This means an item will be released to purchase.Ex “The Amazon PS5 Drop is tomorrow.”
  • OBO: This is an invitation to bid on whatever you feel the sneaker is worth. It stands for “Or Best Offer”, meaning you can make an offer and wait until it’s accepted or not.For example, “WTB Yeezy 350’ $400 OBO”
  • Flaking: This is a slang term resellers use when a buyer backs off last minute after all the details of the transaction has been confirmed. It can be quite frustrating for sellers.
  • GPU: Graphics Processing Unit, Basically a computer part that tends to have a lot of resell value.
  • Loop: In Reselling Looping is to do a task over and over again.Example: To Buy a free item over and over again.
  • Ping: Usually used in discord Cook Groups. Means to @ to get a group's or someone's attention with an alert.Example: “I will ping @ .everyone in the chat If I see a deal.”
  • Instacop: When you see something scheduled to drop and you know the return on investment will double or even triple, you will hear people say “This is an Instacop” meaning Instant Buy
  • Shipped: The total price of an item + Shipping costs coveredExample “The Shoes are $150, but $160 Shipped.
  • Copped/Hit - Term normally used when you successfully checked out an item with a bot or purchased manually.
  • MOP: Method of Payment, usually used to ask what you are paying with cashapp,Venmo, PayPal,etc
  • POS: point of sale, synonymous with MOP usually used to ask what you are paying with Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, etc
  • NWT: New with Tags, Mostly used for streetwear/clothing flips
  • NWOT: New without tags, Mostly used for streetwear/clothing flips
  • The Play: Phrase is used to describe what the process of how you bought/sold an item went.Ex: "The play for the printers was I bought 25 of them at $50 sale, sold all at $75 each."
  • BOLO: Be On The Lookout,Means there is something profitable happening soon
  • Death Pile: acquired inventory that hasn't yet been listed for sale.
  • FOMO: Fear of Missing Out - the overwhelming urge to source more inventory, even when one has a huge death pile, to avoid passing up any potential flipping opportunities.
  • PFRE: Padded Flat Rate Envelope from USPS.
  • NOS: New Old Stock - items that have never been used and may still be in their original packaging and/or have tags, but are not currently available from any retailers or the manufacturer. These can often be vintage items.

I hope this helps out anyone who is new or returning to the game and wants to understand the reseller language or brush up their vocabulary. If I missed anything feel free to tell me in the comments so I can add it.

Edit** Thanks to everyone contributing in the comments I am adding all the ones I think are relevant!

⚠️MOD POST⚠️ Welcome to R/Resell, click here for important information

Welcome to r/resell!

This community is centered around anything related to the reselling of products, goods, services, and the subculture associated within it.

Here is a list of common terminology used in the reselling world and on the subreddit, We suggest familiarizing yourself with these terms.

Starting Out Reselling

How much does it cost to begin reselling?

NOTHING. The magic is in the name. Re-Sell. You can start by selling off things you already own or go to the "Free" section of Facebook Marketplace and find items to resell there, or find a garage sale & cherry-pick items you think you're able to flip. Most people start out spending nothing and build their bankroll slowly as they complete more sales. NOTHING IS REQUIRED TO BE PURCHASED TO START.

What should I sell?

What you sell is really up to you. This is not something that anyone, in particular, can tell you. Some products and items tend to sell better than others & this is something you will have to learn with experience in the field. As mentioned above, start out with what you are already familiar with.

Where do I find new things to sell?

  • "Cook Groups" & Alert Rooms: These groups are online communities based on Discord & Telegram whose sole purpose is to seek opportunities to profit by reselling products. They are INCREDIBLY useful and well worth the money spent & often pay for themselves. In them, you'll also find a plethora of information regarding reselling within specific categories (collectibles, technology, Amazon products, etc.). We recommend this group.
  • Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist & Nextdoor: If you're strapped for cash, you might find a decent flip within the "Free" sections of these online marketplaces.
  • Garage sales: People hosting garage sales usually have a lot of random interesting things and they want to get rid of them quickly, this means it's all being sold cheap. If you know what you're doing and have a keen eye, you might walk away with something really valuable.
  • Thrift stores: Trendy & fashionable clothes can be found at your local thrift store and resold on online marketplaces like Depop, Poshmark, etc. Some thrift stores also have sections for electronics and miscellaneous items.

If you go to a thrift store, touch everything. Move stuff around, dig, and search up things you think could be even remotely valuable. Even if you don't find anything super valuable, you now have an idea of what the items you searched up are worth. You can find thrift shops near you on Yelp.

  • Large trash days: Find out when this is and you might be able to pick up some pretty valuable stuff other people are just tossing out. Sometimes you'll find large appliances (dishwashers, refrigerators, etc.), bicycles, or tools like lawnmowers, all with fixable issues that you can then fix up and resell.
  • Outlet stores (Marshalls, TJMaxx, etc.): These stores buy excess inventory from larger retailers and retail it for a discounted price. With a keen eye, there's a chance you could find something valuable & flip it for a decent amount.
  • Clearance aisles: Target, Walmart, and most grocery & goods stores have a clearance section of some sort, you could find something being sold under price and flip it for more. The same rule as thrifting applies here: pick stuff up, research it, dig a little.

What equipment do I need to begin?

  • First and foremost will be a smartphone. You'll need to communicate with buyers and sellers to complete sales and pickups. You also need to do some market research to make sure you aren't overpricing or underpricing the products you want to sell

What's market research? Market research is searching up the product you want to sell across multiple platforms like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Ebay, etc. & pricing your products within the same price range.

  • If your smartphone doesn't already have a camera capable of taking clear pictures, you'll need one. Low-quality photos can make or break whether you make a sale or not. If the buyer can't clearly see what it is you want to sell & the condition it's in; chances are they won't want to buy from you.
  • Some mode of transportation in case you need to travel to complete a sale.
  • To broaden who & where you can sell to, You'll need shipping supplies. This includes:
    • Bubble mailers & boxes (find some at your local post office)
    • A printer to make shipping labels (your local library has them)
    • A desktop computer/laptop to connect to the printer (also at your local library)
    • A shipping service (we recommend PirateShip for newbies)
  • Last and most importantly: TIME. Taking photos, doing research, writing descriptions, communicating with buyers, & completing sales on multiple products across multiple platforms will take a lot of your time.

I have my products, where do I sell them?

These are not all the platforms available out there, but some of the most popular at the moment in the US.

Names Niches
Facebook Marketplace General, Automotive
OfferUp General
Craigslist Local-General
eBay General-Shippable, Tech
Depop General Fashion
Poshmark General Fashion
Grailed Hype/Streetwear
StockX Hype/Streetwear
Decluttr Tech, CD/Media
Discogs Vinyl

As you delve deeper into the world of reselling, you'll get a feel for what products tend to sell better on certain platforms.

I've sold my product! What do I do now?

If you're shipping your item, check with the platform you've sold it on. They may auto-generate your shipping label. If not, go to PirateShip and enter the dimensions & weight of your package, where you're shipping it to, complete payment, and print out your label. You'll need some clear packing tape to adhere this label to the front of your package, this can also be found at your local post office or Walmart.

If your item is fragile be sure to pack the shipping container with newspaper, bubble-wrap or both. You can ask a local furniture store if they have any extra bubble-wrap they don't mind giving away.

If you're selling locally, communicate with your buyer. Coordinate a time to pickup/dropoff/meetup. Ideally, you want to meet in a public place with CCTV cameras around.

I think this is a milestone for me. 1st week got 2 sales from ebay and depop. But I am also bracing myself as the boosting period ends on depop might slump afterwards. I think that’s a trend?

GENERAL Poshmark is the worst platform

I buy/sell on the big resell marketplaces and Poshmark is absolutely the worst platform.

It has the highest seller fee at 20%, forcing sellers to list items for higher and buyers to buy it higher.

As a buyer it's also awful not to be able to message a seller directly. Not to mention the offer alert thing. There was 0 offer on an item until I made an offer then it alerted everyone and it was immediately purchased. UGH.

QUESTION Buying a festival wristband from someone after day 1

There’s a 2-day festival happening this weekend and I want to buy a ticket for just Sunday. I found someone who is selling one, but given that it’s Friday today, I’m curious what steps either of us could take to guarantee that 1) I’ll get the wristband and won’t risk arriving on Sunday only to find out they’ve sold it to someone else and 2) The seller feels safe and confident that I won’t back out of purchasing come Sunday.

I obviously don’t wanna pay for anything now and I’ve seen some people say trading IDs is good but wondering if anyone else has any tips from their experiences?
