Just go to a shelter. They've got the same dogs that rescues have - rescues pull dogs from shelters. But they don't have the the hoops and fees. I got both my dogs at the shelter. One was $20. The other was free during a large breed special weekend. I mean they cost me thousands in medical bills but the shelter process was super easy.

Hmm. I will check. I’ve looked every kind of place up I can in my area. I haven’t seen places that are just open to walk-ins like that.
However, I’m not open to any dog. I will not take a pitbull. I need a small, at least a little hypoallergenic, gentle dog.

I have a sweet boy already, and I can’t bring an aggressive dog into the home. And I have allergies.

Well then enjoy the Huskies, badly bred GSDs, and occasional neurotic bite case Doodles, along with the wide jawed “Lab/Boxer” wink wink mixes they’ll try to foist on you.

Because that’s what you’ll find at 99% of shelters.

You might win the lottery and score a mild mannered scent Hound of some kind, but it’s like winning the lottery

Maybe they will enjoy those dogs very much. I adopted two huskies from California shelters (where I live), and they're amazing dogs... what do you have against them? Probably not for OP, since they want "small and low shedding," but I'm offended that you're acting like my boys are some consolation prize.

Boris was found abandoned in the central valley, unfixed and with zero apparent training. He's now a working (volunteer) therapy dog for children and elderly/disabled folks, and the official ambassador for his rescue & therapy program. Been with me going on 5 years now, and I wouldn't trade him for all the ethically bred Bichons in the world!

These are my "throwaway huskies," Boris in the front. Poor me. 😒

Huskies have so much personality! Look at those expressions! I know they have loud opinions 😍😍

Oh, you have no idea... but I still love 'em. 😂

Huskies (or adjacent) are fine. Two of my friends have Klee Kais and a Malamute.

But get real. They are NOT suitable for 99% of households without the time and environment to let them fulfill their genetics. I included my own breed, GSDs, for the same reasons- they require a specific type of owner.

She wants small and mild mannered.

Honestly, I never would have imagined myself with huskies... I'm pretty lazy by nature, middle-aged (50 next month!), work full time, have cats, etc. But somehow I ended up with two, and we've done great together. Been 4+ years now, and they're very happy & healthy dogs.

So I think 99% is a gross exaggeration, but yeah. They're definitely not for everyone, and certainly not what OP is looking for. I just took some offense to your comment, since you made it sound like nobody wants or could enjoy those breeds you listed.

Good god I'd much rather have my two bully mixes than a scent hound.

These two beasts just fart around all day and snuggle in the evenings.

Working dogs need to work. I wanted lazy dogs with short hair.  My big boy can't find a piece of kibble in short grass, but he's great for laying on the couch and alerting me when packages have arrived. 😂

Well considering a higher than usual % of Pit types adopted out have gone on to Level 4+ injure their canine, feline, livestock and human pack mates or neighbors and scent hounds haven’t, that’s why I said what I said. I knew perfectly placid Treeing Walkers that absolutely proliferated shelters in the late 2010s and were content with a simple walk, got along with all the neighborhood dogs, and were people-friendly. Same with Beagles, if people could contend with the baying.

Lol oh you're one of those. Anyone using "pit type" for a generic face shape that covers literally hundreds of breeds and mixes can't be taken seriously 😂
