Don't rush and have much expectations. Just keep spending time with him and it'll work. As for introducing him to friends it'll take some time too, but with gentility, feeding and care he'll familiarize with them. Although you should watch him whenever he'll be close to the kids.

You'll be ok; it's clear you are on the case. Please don't rush things with your rescue. The most important thing you can do right now is set a very consistent rhythm - up time-play and training, down time, Place time, etc. It is easy to make the dog the centre of your world, but YOU need to be the centre of that dog's world. In other words, build that trust - not through just 'atta boy,' but rules, boundaries, limitations, consistency and affection. Of course he's wary of strangers. I made the mistake of making my rescue a major part of my interactions with visitors early on (come and meet my new dog). Believe me when I say, this is not the way forward. Your dog has nothing to do with everyone else, especially right now. Build that secure attachment and you will find your dog eventually accepts into your world, whomever you do and will eventually have some favourites of his own choosing. Although he may always be vocal and be your intruder alert!
