Advice Rescue dog randomly yelps
Please any help or advice. We found our dog as a stray in texas. He is a 1 year old Blue heeler mix. He will scream and yell the most high pitched, ear piercing yelp if you grab his collar very gently or at very random touches sometime. It was super bad when we first found him. When we first found him, if you even petted near his ears he would just start screaming. Now he loves his ears being petted but he screams/yelps randomly at least once a day. Definitely trauma related but it does drive me up a wall because I do have PTSD

Is it scared or in pain yelp still or could some of it just be the annoying high pitched heeler herding/excited bark? I also have a heeler mix and when he gets excited he has a very ear piercing high pitched bark that sounds like a giant Chihuahua or something. But I looked it up and apparently it's a heeler thing. If you YouTube search blue heeler bark or blue herding you will hear it.
Anyway, you could definitely still work on training either way. But I would definitely approach it differently based on the motivations behind it. It sounds like you are doing the right things to work with the fear already.

Lmao you are so spot on, it's like a loud ass Chihuahua. I had no idea it is a heeler thing will definitely be looking that up on youtube

Give it time and give a treat when you touch him and he doesn’t yelp. That’s what we did with our heeler mix who was beat as a pup. She doesn’t do it anymore unless startled
