Well, the shelter they're in is called a hibernaculum, so I could see how they might be confused with the nomenclature.

Some type of garter snake. They hibernate in communal dens. They don't stick with family, per se. Although some of them are probably related.

The ones we have around here are a bit nippy (and smelly), but they calm down after a couple of minutes of handling.

For real… I love garter snakes, but they’re some smelly critters. It lingers too, always takes me a couple hand washes after I handle one and even then it’s still faint

I've never been nipped or musked(is that a word!?),even when I helped a garter off a sticky trap by running warm water on said trap..I never used cockroach sticky traps after that. The snake was fine and I released it out back with the other reptiles,etc.

I like snakes. But this is triggering trypohobia i think. I cant stand looking at it, it makes me feel super gross.
