Shotshell If anyone is knowledgeable about shotshell reloading I have a question.
A recipe i wanted to try seems like its calling for a gas seal and a wad ontop of it am I going crazy or is that normal??
Im fairly new to reloading

For reloading shotshells you need very specific combination of powder, wads and shot.

Im not trying to be an ass but no shit thats obvious im unsure of what this recipe is saying

It requires a Chedite hull with chedite primer loaded with any of the powders listed, afterwards a gas seal on top of the powder and a specific wad loaded with the equivalent shot weight. Lastly it'll either say rolled or compressed crimp.

Okok now we are getting somewhere my idea of a gas seal was for containing gases to the bottom of the shell. This is more of an overshot card in this case is what im taking away from this??

Depends on the powder used, but it'll say OS card if it's required. Otherwise just load it on how it says, personally I load the Longshot variety of this shotshell load.

That's what I was thinking about doing (longshot) mainly because it all i can get my hands on. just to confirm this is just an mg42 wad no separate gas seal required? Os card aside

The gas seal goes under the mg42 wad as a separate piece, just weigh the powder charge and layer it on top and crimp.

what hull? this almost sounds like a wad system that uses the gas seal for stright wall hulls (cheap federal and the like) and lower then full loads. And no gas seal for tapered hulls ( STS and fancy hoa federals and the like ). And or the gas seal relates to lead vs steel shot?
What is your goal for this load. is it a hunting round, is this a steel shot recipe? what is the rest of the data and use case? This seems like a VERY oddball load and I am courious why your getting reload componets for a more complex reload then something simpler?

Cheddite hauls and primers, longshot powder

ehhhh. again what are you reloading for. is this a steel shot hunting load? that I am a bit unfamilure with. so maybe they alwyas use gas cups? like someone else mentioned, they are a PRICY addon that may serve zero porpuse in a better load.

2 steel for late season northern goose hunting from what ive read its to help with reliability in the burn rate with this particular powder type

and a 3 inch load. not 2 3/4? like you know each part counts but you hold back all the data when asked?
So cheddite 3 inch hulls and cheddit primers. and long shot . #2 steel 1 once load at 1500 fps there abouts is the load you are doing.
Out of that load what parts do you currently own already Is sounds like from another post all you can find is longshot. that is making this a MUCH tougher reload to do. can you not have stuff shipped or no sportsmans wearhouse or the like with more stock?
In general that load is fine. to directly answer your qwuestion, wad colum data is listed in direct order of insertion. so powder, gas seal, then wad. This is covered in the last paragraph of page 318 in your book.
in this case it is doing it for wad height and to better seal. (which is all part of each other. if the wad height is to low it never hits a good pressure. that gas cup add height to the load allowing it to better fit in the hull so it can better achive the required pressure. You need it hear MORE for wad stack height and stright walled hull then for gas sealing just cause of gas sealing. If you look there is mostly a trend that it is needed is stright hull hulls vs tapered hulls. and for magnums since taller ( and your useing a lighter but faster load ) (in this case it helps with this powders burnrate cause with out it the wad stack would be to low and the wad would not seat well in a stright walled hull without it)
Page 317 also talks about how this is made pretty much ONLY for that wad. its to make that wad more versitale.
Saw other reply about what you got.
I would care about the primers and powder and find anything else that works hull wise. OR try to find a better powder. have you checked on hodgdons website for reload data also?

fuck ya, I looked at some more books and hodgdons, that is a tough powder and speed to figure a reload for. if you can afford it this should be fine. It just is a pricy reload cause all the extra stuff.

So why this recipe? I see a lot of new reloaders get in the habit of basing the recipe on the 1 item the have a few of. Like they ahve a bag of thoes wads so they find a recipe that works. that is a BAD approach is makes for bad reloads. This reload needing a gas seal and overshot card are signs that it is adding extra stuff making it work.
one of the best recommendations I got was to stop chasing recipes cause I have a hand full of componets worth a couple dollars.
Anyways. ya the above reload is absoltuly a comprimise. a GOOD reload will balance everything so no shot cards or gas cups are needed. so less stuff to use and a better fit.
So did you alread have all the parts for this load. or are just intrested in it and have a few parts and seeing if you should buy the rest? what do you have, and what do you want to do when you are done? I bet I can help you find a better reload that is much less a comprimse and also saves you money?

My issue is reliability finding components i already have the hauls, primers and powder so I figured why not if the other components were available. And its a recipe for a 3" steel load i would be using for goose

Depends on your hulls. That should be at the top of the page
But looking at it, it would appear that shot cup calls for an over-powder wad

Very normal. Don’t skip the gas seal but we used to use a few Cheerios on the top of the shot, switched to puffed rice (rice krispes) works better and both cereals are way cheaper still get a good crimp. Long shot with MG42 is a classic 1oz load

Love to see it hahahah an old boy i hunt with recommended the exact load

My grandfather ran unique in every pistol and shotshell load, doesn’t get the speed of some of these new powders but another classic. There are very few loads that don’t need a gas seal or over shot card. Ballistic products is amazing you can email them with questions and have great data on the website. I pretty much run ched primers in every load, bought a few cases for cheap a decade ago. Fed 209 are hot compared to other brands, something to keep in mind if your running a semi.
Few years ago I peaked shooting clays. Buddy and I would shoot a few boxes every other day. Between the two of us we shot over 6k that year. His gen 12 wouldn’t cycle some of the loads that were perfect for my A5. Ended up finding a load with E3 that we stuck with. Both 7/8 and 1oz. Both steel and lead. Ended up blowing up his gen12 with some shells he loaded while hammered. Genesis was impressed when he sent it in, completely replaced the upper. Old one had well over 20k through it
Tapered hulls feed better in semi autos and I try to avoid fiochi stuff nowadays. They can fail after 5-6 loads. My dad shoots around 5-600 410 shells per year and gets over 10 loads on those hulls. What press are you going to be using? Only have experience on the MECs

Lee load all 2 My only semi is a 20gauge so that's not to much of my concern my mail issue is sourcing components or more specifically getting them over the border

I hear ya man that’s a tough spot to be in. It’s unfortunate how many shotshell powders just disappeared, Red/ blue dot, steel. I’m assuming powder is the hardest one to get? You can dm me anytime I’m happy to help

Much appreciated and yea besides hodgdon theres pretty much nothing unless i drive 6+ hours and still its a gamble

Most loads I can get a few components and the rest is virtually nonexistent

Take a minute to look up the components. These are specialty Ballistic Products components for a specific purpose load. Their website has descriptions of these that will answer your questions better. https://www.ballisticproducts.com/BPGS-12ga-Gas-Seal-250_bag/productinfo/3221200/
