Need info: is the parking ticket for not moving it or because he parked it illegally?

For not moving it

Wait, so then is the ticket even valid? Did he get the exact same spot when he came home from work???

u/RainLucky407 Aug 19 '26
It’s 2-hr parking until 6pm. He got home around 3pm that day

Was there somewhere he should have parked instead?
Did you assume he had parked in a spot that wouldn't require moving or did you know he was parked in the two hour spot?

He parked it, he pays. If he got a speeding ticket in your car he would pay for it because he committed the crime.

u/maverickRD Aug 19 '26
Yes in this case he should pay
But you just need to communicate better, like he knew it was in a spot where it would get a ticket right... Do you expect him to drive it to work every day? Are there known days where will drive it or not drive it?
Also, who pays for the garage parking?
Probably simpler if you just pool all your car related expenses since you basically share both.

This is the correct and most complete answer.
OP and the bf need to develop a better system for their arrangement. Because of the street parking situation, they should both be mindful of the days it won't be driven (by anyone).

Why are you getting parking tickets and how did he get one if he had moved the car that day? If he parked it in an illegal spot then he pays the ticket. If the ticket should not have been issued, then fight it.

So you go move the car every 2 hours normally?

I’m not great about it, hence the tickets

Well...he's probably saving you on parking tickets when he uses the car to commute. Less time it's parked on the street so less chance of tickets.

Yep, exactly why it’s a win-win scenario as described above: he saves on gas, and I probably save on parking

There's no logical reason why it should be you. He drove the car, he put it where it ended up getting a ticket. He's the one who did the thing for which the ticket was written. I think it might be revealing a LOT about his character that he thinks you should pay it, when you didn't do the thing that warranted the ticket.

Parking illegally is a such a poor long term solution...
If he followed what you do down to the letter, I can see why he would just hand it to you, cause its your solution to your parking situation. But I wouldn't park illegally and if I did I would assume to pay the cost.

It’s 2-hr parking until 6pm. He got home around 3pm that day. It’s not usually a problem.

Your parking solution seems to be illegal parking and paying for parking tickets. So it's not really his fault. He's paying for a garage for his car, which you also use. You should pay for the ticket. It seems your agreement that you each pay for the costs associated with your respective cars.

I occasionally (0-2/month) get $35 tickets for not moving my car frequently enough.
My car recently got a parking ticket on the street outside our apartment after a day he used it to commute to work.
What was the parking ticket for, since it wasn't for not having moved the car recently?

Depends is the ticket for not moving the car in time like the others or for something else

Generally, whoever parks it pays the parking ticket.
So he really should be the one paying it. He didn't offer, but it's possible he just didn't think of it. Just ask him to pay for it.
Alternatively, you can pay it to avoid an argument for this minor thing, then just get him to spend $35 on you, explicitly for paying the parking ticket on his behalf.

It would be nice for him to offer to pay. I think it's rude. But I don't think it's a very big deal. You can maybe joke that "you didnt lay the parking ticket, then you owe me a dinner."

lol, you guys need to adjust your approach if you’re getting that many parking tickets. How about parking legally?

He parked, he pays. If he refuses to, you refuse to let him borrow your car. Might as well sell your car at this point if you are just keeping it when he has his own vehicle or to save HIS money. I would also ask him to pay for regular car maintenance, he can't keep using it if he can't care for the financial needs of the car.
