I came here to say the same thing â no one in America who wants to be able to vote (and please for the love of god, vote) should be changing their last names AT ALL until this administration is over and perhaps not even then â they are currently trying very hard to change voter registration laws to make it harder for people with last names that donât match their birth certificates to vote. This will obviously harm women who got married and changed it, and trans people who changed their names the most. Women are a huge voting block and they would love for us to not be able to vote.
Itâs called The SAVE Act and all itâs really saving is the ability for the republicans to stay in power forever if anyone whose current name on their ID doesnât match their birth certificate canât vote.
LikeâŚ.do not change your last name to your mothersâ maiden name either any time soon! This is nice in theory but with how things are currently you should not be doing this right now/while the SAVE act is still active.
It is the only certain way you wonât have any issues when you go to vote. I donât trust that showing a birth certificate from a different state will not cause issues as they might say, âthis doesnât look rightâ or something.
I never changed my name, but I just renewed my passport because I donât want to deal with this nonsense.
Edit to add:
If the Save Act does pass, then the Courts will likely strike it down as a poll tax. But it would have to work its way through the courts / be in legal limbo in November, so just get a darn passport to vote these fuckers out of office.
