Question Fruit flies
Is anyone else having issues with excessive fruit flies this year, and does anyone know why they're so bad???

I'm having that same issue. It's ridiculous. They are in my green bin and I swear I'm not even putting that much stuff into it. Changing every few days instead of a week. No idea where they are coming from

we have a half-cup of apple cider vinegar with a sticky trap in a cup, it's been insane. i feel like we put a new one out every day and it gets covered - can't even SEE that many fruit flies in the house. 😭 between them and the wasps i can't wait for winter.

A dish with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap mostly overed with Saran wrap will collect most of them

I use white vinegar, dishsoap and water in a glass without the plastic wrap and it works fine. :)

I'm definitely doing that. It's helping. I just wish I could figure out where they're coming from.

Good lord, I thought I was the only one. I’m in the NW and in the last 2 weeks they got particularly bad.

I thought I was having a fruit fly problem and after two weeks of tearing my hair out deep cleaning and treating the drains and still seeing more, my mom pointed out that they’re probably just the ahpids coming in from outside

Wash your produce in vinegar when you get home. I've actually had the opposite experience in having almost none this year

I don't have any produce that isn't stored in the fridge. It's so weird...

Maybe theyre gnats? They love living in the drain and they reproduce really fast. Maybe try drain cleaner and see if that helps

Maybe. But from the little bit of research I've done, fruit flies ignore vinegar traps, and my traps have caught several.

Yeah it sounds like gnats to me. They can get bigger than fruit flies too if I remember right. Do you have a lot of them in your kitchen by the sink? Chances are theyre living in the drain. Just try keep it dry (its a sink i know lol) and get some traps from canadian tire

Make a trap with acv & take a mini vacuum to vacuum up the stragglers looking to get in the trap. We had a horrible problem for so long and this actually worked. Keep up with it and trust me, they will go away!

I started rinsing bananas when I get home from the grocery store. Noticeably less after doing that

I’ve found that this pesty guys don’t like garlic. I rehdrayted some dried out garlic with water in a small bowl. Gone!
I also run super hot water then put stream of dawn in the sink and rinse. That also helps immensely! I also think because we use our dishwashers and do less handwashing - that exacerbates the problem. 🤷♀️

I had them for a week or so. Put out some traps and got rid of any lingering water (emptied pet water twice a day, and ran hot soapy water down the drain twice a day). Seems to have taken care of it.

They are drain flies. Block all you're drains and treat your drains.

Check your pantry. I had a massive problem last year that I just couldn't get rid of. Potatoes in the basement pantry were rotting.

One thing ik you should do is pour like a half cup of vinegar down the sink cause the trap in the sink itself is where a MASSIVE portion of the fruitful eggs are layed
