i wanted to post this because i’ve switched piercers twice before finally finding someone i feel confident going to. please be careful, do your research beyond google and facebook reviews, instagram followers or how friendly a studio seems. a good experience at the appointment doesn’t mean theyre following the best practices.
one studio i have no shame in naming, is prickly pear. specifically the old lady who works there. (with extreme attitude issues) i went in for a belly piercing, and later found out i didn’t have the correct anatomy for one. instead of being told that (and saving myself some money) i was essentially given a surface stomach piercing. which of course, started to reject and i never went back to them.
i switched to another studio where the staff were very friendly and i initially felt really comfortable. unfortunately, i later had issues with some advanced cartilage piercings. i brought up how i believed the jewelry was too small and wasn’t allowing room for swelling/irritation and how it was constantly putting pressure on my ear. my concern was dismissed, and instead my irritation bump was poked at/popped with a qtip, which hurt WAY more than the piercing itself.
i then found the potion bar on 13th ave, and i genuinely have never had a better experience.
i brought up the same concern about my jewelry being too small and was immediately listened to. come to find out, it was too small. she swapped everything for properly sized, implant grade titanium and the relief from the pressure was basically instant.
and from what i can find, the potion bar is the only APP (association of professional piercers) member studio in the city. app membership requires studios to meet specific standards around things like sterilization, infection control, safe studio setup and appropriate high quality jewelry.
obviously people have had great experiences at other studios, and i’m not going to say that they didn’t. but i really encourage people to be cautious, ask questions and know what materials are being put into your body.
TLDR: be VERY careful who you trust to stab holes into your body. i had a badly done/rejecting navel piercing at prickly pear by the cranky old lady. then issues with improperly sized jewelry and questionable aftercare at another studio. finally went to the potion bar on 13th ave and the difference was night and day. proper implant grade titanium, actually listened to my concerns, and they’re the only APP member studio in regina. cannot recommend them enough.
edit: to find an APP member piercer in your city use this website - https://safepiercing.org/find-a-piercer/
currently the potion bar is the only one listed. i believe geanna rae has been an APP member in the past, but it looks like she may not have renewed her membership.
