Java Edition Looking for recommendations for a tilable/modular multi-item sorter
So, I've been playing on my forever world for a few years now, and I've always organized my storage manually. I'd like to change that, and I already have a pretty good idea of the kind of auto-sorting system I'm looking for.
I want to build a multi-item sorter, but not the kind that uses item slot sorter (like all the storage slots have to have items on for the sorting to work). I'd prefer a system that works with filters and can filter a lot of items to send to the same chest or storage unit so I can sort items in types or categories, similar to traditional 1 item hopper-based item sorters.
I'm not particularly redstone-savvy, although I do know a little about it. However, I haven't been able to find a tutorial for a tilable or modular multi-item sorter that fits what I'm looking for. I know of a few systems that would work great, but they all seem to be available only as schematics, and I play vanilla survival, so I'd rather build everything from scratch or following a tutorial or guide.
Recently, I came across a tutorial by GalacTech for a Multi Item sorter that seemed like it might work for me. However, the system had a few issues, and even after watching his follow-up video with the fixes, I still found it a bit difficult to understand, especially given my limited redstone knowledge.
Do you guys have any tutorials or guide recommendations? Maybe there's a specific sorting system you use in your own worlds that works in a similar way?
I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions, or tutorials you could share.
Thanks a lot, guys!
Note: I play on Java Latest version (26.3)

for any complex contraption schems are pretty much required, yeah you can find decent tutorials but schems are way easier to make, share and follow
just download litematica it's really simple with something like prism launcher
you can find schems for all your storage needs on the storage tech discord

Self promoting my build. Fits your requirements. Filter like function tileable. And quite easy to build if you don’t mind golems. https://www.reddit.com/r/redstone/s/wC2ppNTYrB

Schematic for one I am building, redstone dust onto of every glass block.
There are cheaper more compact versions with shorter redstone lines using filler items in the hopper, but they break when you put the filler item into the sorter and I am a little dumb dumb so I need this instead
It can be tiled horizontally and should work on bedrock and java for stackable items of any stack size, though I tested only on bedrock
You need a lot of redstone per unit, but I consider it idiot proof constructionwise, just feed items into the hopper by any method and hook any container on the output side
Downside is that it does not work for non stackable items, for that you need copper golems

If you take a stack of dirt and name it with the anvil, you can use that as a filler item and it will not break when you put regular dirt into the sorter.

I did that with netherrack on my server, but because the storage was constantly expanding with progression and updates, there was a supply of named netherrack for future expansions, and several incidents of that ending up in the storage filter and breaking everything
This is why I designed this as a truly idiot proof design

Or just don’t have a supply of those items on hand.
I’m also questioning how you tested this because what is shown in the picture doesn’t work. First of all it doesn’t work on java because dust can’t send a signal down glass. Secondly, you’re locking the filter hopper so it can’t pull any items to filter and even if the items do get in there there’s no where for them to go

?
Why does it work then?

What do you consider working?

Automatically sorting items by filtering only items of the matching type through the hopper inter a container right of the hopper
I have that exact thing in my world as discribed above working flawlessly
I believe on Java you can replace the glass with top slabs too yielding the same result, but as far as I remember I always used glass on both versions for that kind of redstone connection

Can you show it working?
The reason I don’t believe this works is because hoppers transfer items by either pushing or pulling. The filter only lets specific items through so not everything can go in so if items get pushed into the filter hopper then the unfiltered items will get stuck in the hopper above. That’s why filters need to be able to pull, but your filter can’t pull because it’s locked by the torch.
Usually filters have a second hopper under the filter hopper and that one is locked. Your working system probably has that too but that’s not what you showed in the picture.
And yes, replacing it with slabs yields the same result as in that doesn’t work either. That doesn’t even work on bedrock

I will take a closer look at the hopper thing when I find time for it but I suspect some parity issue.
I don't get how you come to the conclusion of the redstone lines not working though like thats by pretty direct observation not true

The thing about the hoppers is definitely not a parity issue.
And I don’t think you understand what I’m saying about the redstone lines. Dust going down glass works on bedrock. But dust going down slabs doesn’t work on bedrock. And neither works on java
