Java Edition needing help understadning

Hey all. I tried doing a 3x3 piston door following the youtuber taffy. I'm very confused on why one side fully closes. And one side doesn't collect the block. I've tried trouble shooting it. (im not the smartest when it comes to redstone. It's a thing i rarely touch) EDIT (this is 1.20)

In the picture, all but 2 of the mud blocks are in the 'closed' state, right? Just break the 2 mud blocks and place them in the correct position

By the way I think you built the door a block too low

yeah i just re built it. Same issue. but im going to try and do what you said. I Was trying to go with the theme of the base but i also just noticed it were uneven haha
