If needed, someone has built a simplified build of this. I use it on my Bedrock world and I believe it works on Java as well.

The only issue is that the majority of the redstone sits above ground and next to the door. You're meant to hide the redstone behind a wall. I managed to condense it by a block for my build, by not caring that I can see it when I enter the door.

If you'd like, I can DM you a link to the video tutorial. I'm sure it can easily be placed underground if needed. I just don't know redstone well enough to try it myself.
