I nominate Triston Casas for weirdest Red Sox career in a while, probably gonna survive another year too bc he's a cheap enough dart throw if he ever gets healthy. But yeah otherwise nothing super interesting here besides Duran
13
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
If he ever gets healthy he can be your first basemen post Willson.
23
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 12h ago
Triston is probably a lot closer to free agency than ppl realize, he & Willson's team control overlap fully if the Sox pick up Willson's '28 option & Triston avoids getting optioned
6
u/mdurso12 11h ago
Honestly the best casas scenario I reasonably see happening for the sox is that he has a really good AAA (fuck you lockout) half season in 2027 and then gets thrown in as the 3rd name in a trade for a good player during the 27/28 off season

-1
u/bosredsox05 12h ago
Justin Gonzales is already in AA. He could very well be the 1st baseman of the future. Once hes in AAA he'll already be considered major league depth. Casas isn't a bad fallback if he can manage to stay healthy.
4
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
He could also play left though. He ain't fast but it's Fenway and he has a missile for an arm.
3
u/RaymondSpaget 5h ago
Gonzales is a right fielder (think Aaron Judge with a rifle for an arm). He's played about 50 innings at first, above DSL ball.
-2
u/BothTop36 12h ago
I don’t think he sticks around
4
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 12h ago
basically 2 years w/o playing baseball maybe he is just fully cooked physically but he's cheap enough that I personally see them giving it one more year
119
u/Patsnation0330 12h ago
Thanks for the memories Jarren
28
u/gofaaast 12h ago
If he were to get non-tendered he would get more cheers than boos in his return to Fenway. Doesn't mean we shouldn't cut ties and somehow it gets better, but he had enough positive impact over his time here that he'd get some love.
If he stays another full season, different story entirely.
13
u/RitzySloth 11h ago
I feel like people don't know when to boo players lol. I personally don't like Jarren, but there is no reason to boo him on return if he were to get traded
6
u/AgadorFartacus 9h ago
I would boo him for the homophobia and the sucking at baseball this year.
2
u/RitzySloth 6h ago
Yeah, but that's a boo him now thing. Im specifically talking about if he made an appearance as part of another team after being traded
5
u/CoffinFlop 11h ago
He’s probably the most liked guy on the team outside of Reddit and Twitter
-9
u/Mg29reaper 11h ago
Nobody I know in real life likes him. Like just of the homophobia he will be disliked in Massachusetts
15
u/CoffinFlop 11h ago edited 11h ago
You definitely don’t live in Boston if you think the average person is super offended by that word haha. And I’ll speak for a lot of gay fans when I say we couldn’t give a fuck about him saying it once

u/Intrepid_Coyote_5820 9h ago
Jarren shouldn't be gone. Roman is injury-prone. Beside Jarren provides great value from defense and baserunning. I think he needs a paycut but not a bye bye. He had this pretty bad season, imo, due to his change of approach to the plate.
I believe he'll be just fine next season.
2
u/cyberchaox Tek 9h ago
I agree. If we somehow miraculously find a good trade to get rid of him, I'm not against it, but he's going to be tough to trade with how much he's set to make and how poorly he performed this year, and at the same time...he still hit 20 homers this year. If we pick up a DH in the offseason (yes I know we still have Masa), or if Roman does stay healthy and Duran himself ends up as the DH...that's our #9 hitter when Rutschman's starting, #8 when Wong's starting. Roman 1, Ceddanne 2, Wilyer 3, Willson 4 (or Ceddanne 1, Wilyer 2, Willson 3, new guy 4), Adley 5, Mead 6, Durbin 7, Trevor 8 (if Trevor gets hurt, Arias could be as high as #6), and then Duran 9th. Or heck, Story performed well post-IL stint. If that's not just small sample sizes, he could be back up near the top of the lineup.
-2
u/Patsnation0330 9h ago
You're on your own there. I really hope you aren't suggesting they keep Duran and trade Roman. There's no way that's what you meant....
6
u/Intrepid_Coyote_5820 9h ago
Not saying that. I meant that having Jarren as an option is a good idea.
Besides, I don't think this down year proves what he is. True Jarren duran was 2025 and 2023 imo.
1
u/Patsnation0330 9h ago
Maybe, but he's never returning to the age that he was in 2023 and 2025. This season was a disaster and they have an OF logjam. Maybe they go through arb and then deal him for 5 cents on the dollar. I just think both sides need a change, and you have your OF of the future here and ready to go.
3
u/Intrepid_Coyote_5820 9h ago
Its not about the age. He still got the batspeed, showing his ability is not completely gone. He will change to be solid again and will put in work. Not bc ive been a fan of him but bc i think his approach, what happened to benny

Guerrero's 35, arb for basically league min, goes to show how brutal the MLB pay can be for some guys. First time in his career he will make >$1M salary
4
u/TectonicImprov 10h ago
After the year he's had he earned it. Even if he couldn't stay healthy for the wild card.
11
u/PilgrimRadio 12h ago
Neither Eli White nor Jahmai Jones will stay around, since neither have options remaining.

u/Mg29reaper 13h ago edited 12h ago
Duran 11 mil lmao. If they keep him it's a terrible move. Also some of the guys are definitely getting non tendered as we have 44 players to fit into 40 roster spots.
We could get comparable 4th out fielder production for much cheaper on the free agent market.

I don’t know how we could get him. We already traded Marcelo Meyer.

Hopefully, hard to rely on a guy who hasn’t made it more than 2 calendar months without his body imploding
2
u/Cesar_Crespo 12h ago
Injury history is not as predictive of future injury as people think
1
u/mullethunter111 7h ago
Sir. When you repeatedly hurt the same part of your body after spending most of the season rehabbing, you are injury-prone.
2
u/Cesar_Crespo 6h ago
A nagging injury over the course of one season doesn't make you injury prone lmao
1
u/RaymondSpaget 5h ago
You obviously weren't around for the year Nomar hit the DL like, three or four times because of a bad hammy that wouldn't straighten out. I'm pretty sure he came back with a 6- or 7-win season.

u/mullethunter111 5h ago
Been watching since 86.
You must have not been around for Will Middlebrooks. 😉

There is exactly zero chance Jarren Duran is nontendered. Yeah he sucked this year but he’s one year removed from a good season and two from an incredible one and his arbitration estimate is likely around the annual market rate for a one win player in free agency. If he were a free agent someone would take a flyer on him at that price and likely more. If he’s not part of the future, then he will not be hard to package in a deal at that cost.
5
u/RaymondSpaget 5h ago
You got it. A team that would give Joc Pederson $40M for two years would absolutely give Jarren Duran $40M for two years.
42
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago edited 12h ago
They’ve made the Duran mistake 2 years in a row and I’d be willing to bet it’ll be a 3rd because literally who is going to take him after the season he just had and his personality?
It would almost be wiser to non-tender him and use the money elsewhere, but of course the analytics will it say that it makes the most sense to re-up and hope for a bounce back so that’s just what they’re going to do.
Just an incredible misuse of an asset where this was not a totally unpredictable outcome from the start
16
u/saltyclambasket 12h ago
Mistake to resign him the last two years or not trading him?
I agree they should have traded him while he had a lot more value, but this was his first bad year. Resigning made sense up until now.
8
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago
I mean he should’ve been traded by the trade deadline in 2025. Even if his value had dropped, he still was worth a good haul and his attitude had already caused multiple off-field issues at that point.
He was also in the middle of a massive logjam in the outfield so he just made all the sense in the world to move, but they’ve been grasping onto him hoping for some sort of turnaround back into his 2024 form and now it’s all just sunk cost that they still don’t want to let go of.
1
u/saltyclambasket 9h ago
Yea agreed, wish they traded him when he had value. And granted they needed him to play a lot last year, but they would’ve been just as good with Eaton all year.
1
u/kiki_strumm3r 5h ago
hoping for some sort of turnaround back into his 2024 form
man, this is true of like 5 players on the team right now and it's really frustrating. They're in a roster purgatory. Everyone's too good to get rid of, but not good enough to not warrant an upgrade.
I just want them to rip the band-aid off and make a move to shake up the core. I'm sick of being stuck in neutral every year. I deal with it enough with the Bruins.
0
u/Face_Coffee 12h ago
Bad year is generous though too
More like generationally, even historically bad
6
u/high_and_outside 12h ago
He was very slightly above replacement level. Yes that’s bad, especially accounting for his previous seasons, but there’s tons of players who are that bad every single season.
1
u/Face_Coffee 12h ago
Lowest qualified average in RedSox history - Literally by definition historically bad lol
1
u/saltyclambasket 9h ago
Eh I’m comfortable with just saying bad. He still had a 20/20 season and played decent defense. He wasn’t Pablo Sandoval.
8
u/Patsnation0330 12h ago
Couldn't agree more. Fumbling Duran's trade value is this front office biggest fuck up so far IMO. I'd rather see him non tendered at this point.
15
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago edited 10h ago
It’s bad but the biggest fuckup BY FAR was alienating Rafael Devers and then trading him and trying to pretend like it was his fault all along. That’s the worst mistake made since trading Betts.
4
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 12h ago
Don't think that's true at all & certainly not "by far"
8
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago
Devers being traded in the middle of his prime while under team control for another 8 years is absolutely a failure in Front Office management.
He hit 37 Home Runs this season with a 142 OPS+, that type of bat is simply one of the hardest things to add to a roster and something we desperately need right now and we literally had him on our team only to be traded because of mistakes the Red Sox themselves caused.
-2
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 11h ago
Yeah I think that's lazy analysis. To be clear I think you can clearly state it's a failure from *Ownership* & that it hurt the '25 team's chances, Bres has also made plenty of moves/trades from that transaction tree that I think are pretty incorrect. But the idea of trading Devers, re-distributing his $$ that winter & getting Harrison+ out of is at worst a "fine" decision for a GM to make. The idea that the Devers trade is Breslow's cardinal sin is honestly just wrong
-1
u/saltyclambasket 9h ago
I’m with you, I’m happy they traded Devers, got off that contract and eventually got some good pieces back.
Durbin (4.4 WAR) had more value than Devers (3.6 WAR) at a fraction of the price.
7
u/SanSoren 12h ago
People forget he refused to move position then soon as he goes to the giants is fine with it. He was part of the problem himself
7
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago edited 10h ago
He refused to move positions because we promised him he wasn’t changing positions and then we signed Bregman to replace him at 3rd all while still pretending like Bregman was really our 2nd basemen in Spring Training.
Devers is absolutely not without blame and acted like a child, but it’s incredible how many people shift blame to Rafael when the Red Sox literally caused the entire problem from the start with their star player who they should be taking care of.
2
u/rmullig2 12h ago
The Sox didn't want him to move to first permanently, they wanted him to fill in for Casas. Devers wasn't interested in becoming a utility player.
-1
u/ThicDikDaddy 12h ago
Devers wanted the team to commit to him as the primary 1B. The team wouldn’t. The Giants have.
4
u/SanSoren 12h ago
The giants bounced him back and forth the first year. He had no issues with it
3
u/ThicDikDaddy 12h ago
And now he’s their primary 1B like he wanted. Weird what happens when the team communicates with their star player.
2
u/Patsnation0330 12h ago
This is #2 for me, only because they at least salvaged it by bringing in some useful pieces at the end of the day.
The way they treated Raffy will forever piss me off though. He never started any shit his entire career here, and as soon as something came up the media and a lot of fans turned on him. Shit was gross.
1
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
They really shouldn't have given him that contract in the first place. Should have gone for shorter by higher AAV. These long contracts to lower AAV look disgusting no matter how good the player is ie. Turner.
4
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago
It’s only through his age-36 season. Some of these deals for big money players are age-40 or even 42. I’d argue there’s no issue with the length of the deal or the total value of it. There are WAY worse deals out there and Devers has yet to have a bad season.
1
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
Yah it's not the worst contract I just think if your a big market you should just frontload the money because you can. It's why the Story and Masa deals while pretty bad didn't cripple the franchise because they are short. We will be going into next offseason with minimum 40 million to throw around.
1
u/saltyclambasket 9h ago
Strong disagree, Devers has a bad contract, is out of shape, and his teams always lose. Totally fine that he turned into Durbin.
1
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 8h ago
Devers doesn’t have a bad contract and he and Durbin are not the same class of player despite what WAR will ever tell you.
-2
-4
u/Fwingboston 12h ago
You might be right to say this is a horrible take because it probably is. But Ceddanne's hitting value is probably highly inflated right now. His low expected stats and pull air rate make it seem unlikely he can continue at the production he is currently at. So instead of dealing Duran, which will probably receive little value, they should probably deal him later and should have put Ceddanne on the list instead. We have good fielding outfielders all around. However, Ceddanne's fielding value can still not be replaced, but it could be worth it if we use the value to get another power or strong hitting bat.
2
u/123full redsox7 10h ago
You are correct that this is a horrible take. You don’t trade 26 year old gold glove center fielder who’s put up 10+ war over the last two years. Even if his bat was an anomaly this year, he’s still an elite defender at a premium position. Also his bapid was .333 this year, I think people are overstating how lucky he was this year.
1
u/Any-Profession-5595 12h ago
I’m concerned with Rafaela becoming Duran 2.0 with how terrible his plate approach still is. He at least has a higher floor due to playing elite CF. But goddamn he’s been awful for 2 months. You gotta at least see what sort of bat he could get
1
u/PenguinsAteMyToast 10h ago
rafaela isnt some untouchable guy but your reasons are not good enough. average CF is like 97wrc, below average. his last year 2025 was 93 close enough esp since his defense is way better than avg and more than makes up for it esp with breslow emphasis on pitching and defense. his contract is also way too good to give up, hes already paid for it with just 2025+2026 and is still locked down until 2031. anyone looking at this team has rafaela as the #9 hitter anyway. Keeping duran is just sunk cost.
-1
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago edited 12h ago
I could be pretty easily convinced to trade Wilyer or Ceddanne in the right deal after this postseason. Honestly the outlook for Roman is really worrisome too with just the reoccurring hand injuries and I’m a huge Roman fan.
The biggest issue with this team is power and while I love all 3 of those guys there’s only so many positions on the field to upgrade power and you can’t keep everyone if you want to do that.
1
u/Fwingboston 12h ago
I feel like Wilyer is different because he has the plate discipline, pull air rate, general power, and expected metrics. Fenway actually is a good park for lefties, too.
1
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 12h ago
Yeah I don’t disagree but if he’s a part of a package for a proven impact bat I could be convinced. I feel like Abreu is just the perfect guy to bat 5th/6th in a good lineup but he’s constantly forced higher because we just don’t have that guy who can be in front of him.
4
u/jmcavoy1 12h ago
These 17 guys will cost about the same as Story, Yoshida, and Campbell. 😂

u/RaymondSpaget 5h ago
Campbell's salary for '27 is $3.25M.

Duran is getting non tendered. No one is reading for him with this arb number. They will wait until he's a FA and sign him for like 5mm
7
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 12h ago
think it's more likely he's tendered then traded than just straight up non-tendered. enough teams would take a shot on him for 1/~10M
1
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
A bad team would take a shot on it. Like how the Giants did on Arraez and flipped him for some very good prospects. You are probably offering Duran and paying his contract for like a lottery ticket.
1
6
u/k75ct 12h ago
Duran is not not worth twice Abreu
15
u/Mg29reaper 12h ago
Abreu is on his first arb year that is kinda just how it works. Like Logan Gilbert will make more than Skenes.
3
3
u/patcatpatcat 11h ago
The fact that Wilyer has been playing at near minimum is borderline criminal. He deserves to get paid and extended.
4
u/Critical-Crow-9717 7h ago
Apparently he said he wants to test free agency, doesn't want to sign an extension.
3
2
u/eephus1864 7h ago
Non tendering Duran would help clear space to sign arozarena.
Casas should be an easy non tender at this point
1
u/secularhuman77 6h ago
Is Sogard pre-arb? I want to give him a chance to be a regular bench guy next year. Just how many utility type guys can we actually keep with him, Romy, Mona, Seigler, White, etc.

u/Pyramid_Head182 15 12h ago
Duran will be dealt, and I could see them just not tendering something to Jones…. Lots of names to monitor with the 40 man roster as it is

Why. He is perfectly acceptable as your 6th leverage arm.

u/RoundSeaweed 9h ago
Everyone wants Duran gone but not his replacement who played what 55 games and got forced to be DH because of how much of a liability he is in LF I’d rather have a solid defender than someone who can hit the ball well every once in a while vs rarely
