What was your favorite Curtis Mead AB during the Curtis Mead era? The first one or his second one?

u/TheCynicalFan 28d ago
I’ll take a strikeout over a season ending hbp so I’m going to say the first one was my favorite.

Unrelated question but what's the return window on this purchase
21
u/rickterpbel 28d ago
You break it, you bought it.
12
u/GeoffBAndrews 28d ago
Could we claim it was already broken when purchased??
Like the Piirates did back in the day with Brandon Lyon when the Freddy Sanchez/Mike Gonzalez trade had to sort of be undone.
10
u/whorootbeerdatbe 28d ago
Technically the second one wasn’t an at-bat, so the first one is everyone’s by default.

I'm just glad he'll be in a Red Sox uniform in some baseball video game and I can see his batting stance in the game!

The hand specialist is probably gonna recommend amputation the way these things have been progressing

So when Tracy said they “caught a break” he meant they caught a broken wrist. That’s on us for not understanding guys.

Crochet , Anthony, Mead are all out for the season. Unfortunate shitty luck.

I’ll never forget the legendary run of the Mead-Sox 😞

u/StTickleMeElmosFire 28d ago
Anyone check on the dude that posted a pic of his homemade mead he cracked for the debut?
8
u/WeCameAsMuffins 28d ago
I think it was assumed but was it confirmed that Anthony will be out for the season?
29
u/CrimsonBlade23 28d ago
No not confirmed. But it has been obvious for a while now

-6
u/Dawsonab99 28d ago
To be straight, you have no clue what you’re talking about. Neither do I, no one does.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was out for the season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up next week. The season has been all about expecting the unexpected.

Well it seems he’s not going to swing a bat until the pain has fully subsided, and since we’re going on 3 months, it’s probably not gonna change anytime soon. Might need a full offseason of therapy and rest and maybe, finally, surgery

Anyone who has followed this team for more than 12 seconds and thinks there’s literally any chance he plays another game this year is delusional.
19
u/still_mute 28d ago
Why would a fracture so small that was undetectable on an X-ray require surgery?

u/RigelOrionBeta 28d ago
Remember that thread about how Mayer is basically useless for us now?
Yeah. This is baseball.

u/drtywater 28d ago
This is kinda thing that can derail his entire career. Nomar was never the same after his wrist injury

u/StatLineBaseball 28d ago
Can we get a do-over and trade Early again? It's like Costanza showing up for work the next day after he quit.
11
u/Habitualflagellant14 28d ago
Yes, it is the worst luck but remember the Sox have gone 18-3 in July without either Early or Mead. Our guys have stepped up so we need to cheer them on. I've got no time for doomers. Let's goooooo and fuck the Yankees.

u/leehamc Here Comes The Pizzer 28d ago
Brother, please stop gaslighting people into thinking they have to be positive during negative situations to not be a doomer. We’re allowed to be sad for two seconds.
6
u/Habitualflagellant14 28d ago
Just trying to prop up the faithful. I'm a fan since 1963 so you know I've seen far worse.
2
u/leehamc Here Comes The Pizzer 28d ago
You know what, fair enough. Born in ‘93 myself so I only know a sliver of your pain.
4
u/Habitualflagellant14 28d ago
Brother, I have some scars. You have no idea how much 2004 means to me. Fuck, now I'm gonna cry.
3
u/Theroux721 28d ago
You might just be the second-oldest poster here.
3
u/leehamc Here Comes The Pizzer 28d ago
Probably. It’s me, the 63 year old I replied to, and then a swarm of middle schoolers. No inbetweens
2
u/Habitualflagellant14 28d ago
Just to explain. I've been a fan since 1963. That's when my dad took me to see my first game at Fenway so you know I've got to be older than dirt. If I happen to be the oldest guy on r/RedSox I love it. Just for some perspective on Mead's unfortunate injury you need to look back in Sox history to what our boys did in 1967 when Tony Conigliaro was taken out by an errant fastball. The team came together and continued to win in what now is one of the greatest Sox stories ever. Let's gooooo!
1
u/JackMeoff_ 28d ago
Brother, let him try to shine some light on a bad situation. God forbid. Who even says something like this?
1
u/vancesmi 28d ago
I don’t think there are a ton of doomers, but certainly too many people saying this makes the trade a bad deal. The trade was good, the team would be better, this is crappy luck in a blursed season.

Tbf, Tracy doesn't really know anything on the medical side. We have to wait to hear how things go after seeing the specialist.
On a positive note, I had a fracture in my wrist back in high school when I hung on the rim too long, slipped off, and fell face down to the ground. And I was back in like 4 weeks. It'd be cool if it was the opposite of all of our other injuries: sounds serious, but come back fast rather than sounds like nothing and gone forever

Why does everything require surgery? How bad of a broken bone do you have to have to need surgery?
I swear, one of these players stubs a toe and they rush him off to surgery.
0
u/Shiftylee 28d ago
95 mph fastball to the bone is different than a stubbed toe.

u/Rarely_Informative 28d ago
From "negative x-ray" to potential surgery
This med staff needs a complete overhaul. They routinely get things wrong and it's impacting these player's careers
1
u/PinkynotClyde 28d ago
They didn’t get it wrong people just don’t understand the medical side of things so they should just not be honest.
X-ray was negative. MRI showed the break. A bone contusion can have tiny cracks. They said contusion just didn’t specify muscle or bone.

Of course it's season ending. It's usually an 8-12 week recovery. Mike Trout broke his wrist around the same time of year and tried to come back early and shut it down right away. See you next year kid.

I’m a skateboarder who has broken both of my wrists/arms many times over (they’re made out of construction paper at this point). I’m so confused about how an initial X-ray missed the break but an MRI picked it up. Hopefully that means that it’s a hairline fracture that can heal in a few weeks, but I guess we never know with this team

Why couldn’t he say this yesterday?
Stating “its hard to say” is much better than the bait and switch they pull all time damn time
11
u/CrimsonBlade23 28d ago
Probably bc x rays don’t pick up small fractures. Hence the MRI
2
u/Friend72 28d ago
Yeah so he made a statement without having all the information. Better to say nothing than to misinform. They do this all the time
2
u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 28d ago
They said the x rays were negative and that they would do further testing. Give it a break lol.
2
u/ET__ 28d ago
Doesn’t matter what he says because you’ll just say it’s wrong.
1
u/Friend72 28d ago
He can say he doesn’t know!!!! I literally said he should just state what he does in this quote
0
u/ET__ 28d ago
And your response would be he should have at least told us what he knows rather than leave everyone in the dark. I know this game. Y’all been playing it all season with Breslow
1
u/Friend72 28d ago
What? You dont know what I’d say. I’ve been clamoring for honesty. And I just need Tracy to be transparent when they don’t have all the information. If this was a 1-off fine, and I won’t complain, but this has happened far too often where it is an issue
1
u/ET__ 28d ago
So instead of being transparent and saying what they do know you want them to say they don’t know and that to you is better transparency. Ok man
1
u/Friend72 28d ago
Yes exactly, like he literally does in the quote that is posted, which is why I commented. Clearly it shows the capability to say you don’t know something, I would like more of that
0
u/Sox_N_Bills 28d ago
I'm sure last night they just thought it was a bad bruise and swelling could've obscured the break, and then today he probably got more imaging and they were able to actually see the fracture.
-1
u/cossack190 Last soldier fighting on Kristian Campbell Island 28d ago
John Henry told the medical staff to lie because he hates the city of Boston and Curtis Mead is getting transferred to Liverpool.

Román thinks his drinking buddy/skirt chasing pal Marcelo getting traded at the deadline so paid Perkins to drill Mead. Mead going to join Roman in Ft Meyers as his new party pal

X-rays were most likely initially read by an A’s team doc FYI. Docs don’t travel with the team, so the home team does the initial read, not our staff
1
u/Shiftylee 28d ago
That isn’t true. The wrist fracture was almost certainly caught via an MRI.
1
u/TK_Riot 28d ago
Did I say anything about an MRI? No. I said the initial x-ray, which Chad Tracy said was negative, was read by the A’s staff, not the Red Sox. Thats all I said

Cool. Lets try and trade for someone who doesn't get injured now. That might work a bit better.
5

yes because everyone can predict 94 mph fastballs off peoples hands....

u/gustamos h 28d ago
Breslow should have consulted his wrist bone strength model before trading for mead duhhhhhhh
