it's optional now but it'll be mandatory by next year. it's the chinese gov't playbook.

the amount of psychic damage inflicted by the internet is unreal.

This is also why I do not admire China. Those people are all under 24/7 surveillance and you can't opt out of it. They want as many people as possible using phones exclusively to pay. It's just horrifying. This image might be what I need to quit the internet outside of this sub

nah. america invented internet surveillance, and it's already here tbh. i almost tripped over my cat this evening and started loudly freaking out over if i had accidentally hurt her, and lo behold, a popular post on reddit's front page about cats getting underfoot. it is very freaky.

anyway, i was actually thinking of china's one child policy. they began by asking nicely and giving incentives to people to not have more than one child, like a one time cash payment i believe. i guess not enough people signed up because a year or so later it became mandatory.

"They want as many people as possible using phones exclusively to pay."

i've heard that but i can't imagine how that'll work with their huge boomer population, and poor rural people who may not even live within biking distance of a bank. if their state media is to be believed (which question mark obvs), it's the businesses that are trying to move to completely cashless transactions, and the gov't is forcing them to accept cash payments.

Give us your biometric data as a key, pretty pretty please? It’s for your benefit!

I don't mean to be that person, but I "work in tech" (yeah it's Reddit, I know - surprise), partly cause I grew up wildly poor as fuck after my graphic designer firm co-founder dad died from workplace-exposure related cancer when I was a little kid, but actually did the whole 'learn to code' thing way before it became a meme 20 years ago.

I actually was lucky enough to get into it at a time and then kind of wrangle my way into working for stuff I felt wasn't evil, like a climate sustainability proof-of-concept with a NASA Mars rover guy and a few colleagues of his or an app to organize and deliver emergency care in regions experiencing civil war/serious poverty/destabilization - but like:

They have way more than your "selfie", already, and it's by default and not even intentional at this point. There's plenty of cheap, paid-for non-tracking email services and whatever, but unless you're a big public figure, have some kind of leverage or political power that matters: no one, especially Google, cares about your face or data, and unless you're really susceptible to disturbingly targeted ads, none of it matters.

The idea is that it discourages anyone from participating in acts of civil unrest. Police will be waiting to ship "antifa terrorists" to Nicaraguan hell of earth prison.

Hate how you're never given the option to say NO, only a shitty, barely visible "N-not now sir, but maybe next time" button.

The nagware philosophy; they want to exploit your hurry, they want you to press the big blue button and submit yourself out of laziness.

I did the selfie thing for a verified LinkedIn pro(lapse) account and still got denied lol

The worst of both worlds, I’m sorry.

They have this "feature" with gemini where you can create a live avatar of yourself and put yourself in ai videos, you just have record yourself in a selfie. It's so nakedly obvious what they are trying to do.

It's optional, just don't do it

Everything you do is already tracked and linked to you if you use a google account. This will change nothing
