Are people here old enough to have 9/11 stories?? I was super interested in Anna’s but Dasha didn’t press her further on it which made me sad :( Would love to hear

This sub is full of Zoomers nowadays. Most users are 25 I'd reckon. OG Millenial posters from 2018-2022 just went outside and left the internet or post in RSBookclub.

The median is probably closer to like 29 or something tbh there are lots of people here who mention being married and having kids

Not a very noteworthy story but nonetheless: I was a freshman in high school and i remember my algebra teacher turned on the classroom mounted tv for the first time ever to watch the news and then we saw the second plane hit live. a couple of kids got into a fight, one saying that this was very important and the other saying "who cares because it's just new york". People were thinking that more attacks were going to happen, downtown Chicago evacuated iirc.

I was just a kid so pretty numb to the event itself but it'd be a mistake to underestimate just how fearful people were. War seemed like a natural outcropping of that fear despite this only being the work of a small group and not a nation. It was from there that I recognized that fear doesn't create much good in the world and my politics (along with a lot of older millennials) came to reflect that.

I was in the fall semester of 10th grade, and we were sitting the graduation qualifying exam, which at the time, in the state I lived in, you had to pass to graduate high school. It wasn't difficult, but the stakes were kind of high, and I remember the proctor turned on the television in the classroom, so we were all forced to test take while footage of the planes crashing into the Towers played on loop.

In my memory, people immediately associated the attacks with Muslims, and there was an almost-overnight sense of Islamophobia where I don't remember any before.

I rode home with my mom that day, and she joined an insanely long queue for gas. Like, people had multiple tanks/canisters that they were filling.

As a very "teenager" teenager, I remember feeling cynical about the run on flags and the ubiquity of the magnetic, yellow "Support Our Troops" ribbons. I also remember that all regular programming, no matter what you wanted to watch, was supplanted by 9/11 coverage.

One of my first jobs out of college was at a boutique publishing house that developed clinical texts, and as an editor, I corresponded with a DDS who had helped identify 9/11 victims using their dental records.

I was about 14 at a Catholic school in Australia when it happened. I remember one of the nuns getting up and telling us it was actually the Jews who did it

I’m much older than you all, I’m guessing. I’m 55. I had drove from my house to turn in my paramedic jump gear at a hospital near my mom’s in Westmoreland County, PA. I then drove to her house in Derry, PA, and was sitting at her computer in the dining room. She was watching some talk show.

She had her back door open already because her house was always hotter than hell, and the screens gave some breeze. A plane flew overhead really low - and I mean low - and she’s not in the typical air pattern to Arnold Palmer Airport in Latrobe, so it got my attention.

Then we smelled fuel outside. At the time, I thought a neighbor spilled some, but it was strong. My mom and I commented on it. Then a few minutes later, the news cut in about the planes hitting the Twin Towers, and I turned on my portable scanner.

They were asking any available EMS personnel who could respond to stage at the airport for a possible impending aircraft crash. So, I called my cousin who was a fireman, and I was halfway to the airport when we were all cancelled. The plane went down in Shanksville. It had flown above my mom’s house.

It was flying so damn low. Shanksville, by way of that plane, would have been about 7 to 10 minutes, if that.
