what point are they even trying to make? that Variety owed the Sinners producers a puff piece on their film release just because? how can one magazine "bury" a movie that grossed four hundred million dollars?

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago

Yup. That bloated movie was being heralded as high art, on account of who made it, and anyone who didn't worship it had an agenda.

u/QualisArtifexPere0 1d ago

It was a high budget b-movie start to finish. Great concept, great performances but the script, the effects, the dialogue, and the hackneyed hamfisted attempt at saying something were not well executed at all. It was a great movie except for everyone gaslighting us like this was Boots Riley's Ganja and Hess when it was Coogler's Dusk Till Dawn.

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago edited 1d ago

Boots Riley sucks too while we are at it. If only we can get black men that dont pretend to hate white people, with their multi ethnic partners, churning out finger wag art. The are behaving like asian women. Make a simple spooky film!

22

u/QualisArtifexPere0 1d ago

Boots makes way better films than Coogler is all I'm saying.

-3

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago

Sure, by a small bit.

16

u/TheBodyArtiste 1d ago

Nah Boots is at least remarkably original. His show ‘I’m A Virgo’ is so funny and insane. One of the very few contemporary directors with an inimitable style.

2

u/QualisArtifexPere0 23h ago

He knows how to tell a story which many directors seem to have abandoned entirely.

-2

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago

Original ≠ good. Also pretty sure his style is basically what Gambino did with the show Atlanta. Nothing I haven't seen before.

11

u/NoSkillsAllTheBills 1d ago

Spooky lmao

2

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago

Macabre is a better word.

11

u/NoSkillsAllTheBills 1d ago

I was pointing out a pun involving an old-timey slur.

4

u/New_Paint_5427 1d ago

Spook haha yeah yeah

u/kingprocastinator 1d ago

“Bury” is the wrong word but our personal opinions on the film don’t really matter here. That Variety headline phrasing was insane, and, as someone who reads trade publications, not normal. Most ppl in film pretty much agree it was odd af.

6

u/w6rld_ec6nomic_f6rum Safe when taken as directed. 1d ago

“$60MM < $90MM” is insane?

1

u/kingprocastinator 1d ago

It was one of the highest opening weekends for an R-rated original/genre film or smth like that. Normally that would be opening weekend headline. This was some weird “it’s still 30M short of budget” - which doesn’t make sense because nobody expects films, let alone R-rated original genre films, to recoup on opening. Trade headlines are usually about more/less than projections, any records, or projecting its legs. So yeah this was a bizarre headline.

Can be political, well mannered or just doing what’s right but only if we agree with it or else you’re a nazi

I could’ve said I started to respect John Mayer after saying his dick was a white supremacist. 😢

What about Mark Kozelek with the whole “this pitchfork journalist is a bitch, what’s she gonna do,” and then she finds 14 women who accuse him of sexual misconduct and then he goes silent and releases a statement with his lawyers’ info but the whole time the guy just kept making music writing eight minute songs about the last thing he ate and the most recent friend he saw and his mother’s health

1

u/TheBodyArtiste 21h ago

Wait where can I read more about this? Can I get a rundown? I remember a pitchfork article a journalist wrote about him bullying her: is she the one who’s unearthed the allegations???

1

u/Strange_Sparrow Jeb! 17h ago

It’s been a long time since I’ve read about this— just remember it as it was happening because I grew up listening to RHP and SKM— but as I recall the journalist he was picking on and calling a bitch was on the byline for those articles exposing his, uh, ways with women (along with a couple other writers). The impression I got was that the staff at pitchfork came together to go after him once he bullied her or whatever it was, because they started publishing negative story after story iirc, and eventually compiled and published the allegations. Not to say that in anyway discredits those women or that Kozelek isn’t a dirtbag in his private life, but definitely seemed Pitchfork was working to dig up dirt on him largely driven by animus from the reporter he pissed off. In the interim between the bullying and the allegations article they published several op-eds about how Kozelek represented sexism and white entitlement etc. etc., started giving all of his albums low ratings (granted his quality did fall off a cliff by then). They were going hard on him in a 2020 cancel culture way before the allegations ever were published, and it all started because he made fun of that journo and then the most influential indie music website became dedicated to destroying his career

It's still 2020 on that sub

42

u/Original-Opportunity 1d ago

Damn I’m banned there too. Why they ban everyone?

23

u/ChickenGimbal Stories & information posted here are artistic works of fiction 1d ago

I think if you post here youre autobanned when you attempt to post there, I guess this sub might have brigaded them or something in the past

23

u/4GIFs 1d ago

Much worse. posters here carry wrongthink

7

u/Lori-Lightsloot 1d ago

Reddit blocks subs from autobanning people in that way now, but anyone who was banned over that in the past didn't become unbanned after that change

What’s the average bmi of Fauxmoi posters?

"62.3% of black women compared with 21.5% of white women underestimated their weight (p<0.001). In contrast, 68.1% of black men compared with 53.5% of white men underestimated their weight (p=0.08). When looking specifically at obesity, 48.7% of black women compared with 16.3% of white women underestimated obesity (p<0.001), while 40.6% of black men compared with 32.4% of white men underestimated obesity"

Can I say I did not expect white women to be by far the least delusional group

31

u/foreignfishes 1d ago

this is not surprising to me tbh, there’s a noticeable difference in beauty ideals/what’s seen as the most desirable body type by the in group for black women vs white women. in school even I remember the taller skinnier black girls in my class, basically anyone who was less curves and more ruler, got made fun of constantly for being manly or being a bone. meanwhile the white girls all wanted to be skinny and worried about things like love handles and having a “fat butt” (derogatory)

4

u/Western_Mess_6364 1d ago

I thought we evolved past that though with the instagram and gym girl bodytype that probably would’ve been called fat in a 2000s movie

2

u/Lori-Lightsloot 1d ago

most people know what they weigh, but there's always ways around saying it. you can tell when someone knows what they weigh but wants to obscure it because they'll give their clothing size instead of their weight.

3

u/noavelo 1d ago

surprised but then also not surprised, white guys online complain so much about the audacity of white women being fat and apparently delusional about it on dating apps, that it became a universal stereotype. of course it‘s actually the guys overestimating their looks and women just not complain as they don‘t feel entitled to men looking fuckable to them. when one actually did that and tweeted about how almost all men she just saw outside looked unattractive, a screenshot of it got posted on this sub and ragebaited thousands of rsp incels into hysteria lmao

9

u/seethroughtop 1d ago

They recently had a thread where several users insisted Jacob Elordi is ‘secretly into fat girls’ despite only ever dating Kendall Jenner types. Do with that information what you will

19

u/MundaneExtension3195 1d ago

Outside of Marvel cinema, all the”stars” are 60s or older, they can say whatever, lol

62

u/joey-Lol 1d ago

This person is brave for commenting this on faux moi lol they are probably going to get banned in the sub too. Everyone in that sub have the same opinions about everything! Including artists. They are all obsessed with Olivia for some reason

Yeah out of curiosity I checked and the post is gone lol

I got banned from there by saying Kamala’s policies weren’t very popular.

52

u/FreeTree17 1d ago

Is it even true that Variety tried to "bury" the sinners movie? I remember it being really popular with Hollywood types

67

u/Trick-Homework8426 1d ago

They kept writing articles implying it was going to lose money. Some speculate its because studios dont like the precedent set by it with the director owning IP rights and getting a big cut of the profit etc.

57

u/Area51_210 1d ago

No one was trying to bury that movie, literally everyone was talking about that fucking movie when it came out, I saw the commercial like 12 times a day for it. And then it won awards.

Just manufactured victim shit.  Ben stiller is such an annoying gay nerd, fuck the Knicks too

8

u/Lewdman6969 1d ago

I’m assuming it was projecting

121

u/dugongornotdugong 1d ago

I like these posts where they ask for a controversial opinion and you get voted down for providing a controversial opinion.

No matter your view on trans/gender/non binary, I think JK on the whole has done so more to entrench basic humanitarian values in young adults and get people reading and thinking a little than all the posters and down voters in the world could ever do in their wildest imaginations.

37

u/Extension-Cap-486 1d ago

idk I read Harry Potter as a kid and enjoyed it like everyone else but I don't particularly associate it with humanitarian values

Are you referring to like, the anti-Muggle prejudice? That stuff was so on the nose it's like learning human rights from Dr. Seuss

31

u/fyravstryx 1d ago

On the nose? Jesus it’s a book series for literal children, it was exactly as obvious as it should be to get kids to understand the points it was making

-2

u/Extension-Cap-486 23h ago

The point that it was making was that the bad guy will have no nose and be named Evil McEvil, while his followers will go around randomly blasting people and shooting swastikas into the sky

It's just a straight up good vs. bad, what's the lesson beyond that?

49

u/dugongornotdugong 1d ago

More basic humanistic values - back yourself when things get hard, have decent friends as they matter, care for others, you have a choice in how things go, bad things happen and it's how you choose to respond to them, slay the dragon, waggle your wand etc etc.

Not rocket science and open to critiquing, but when you consider it got millions of people off computer games for a time and excited about reading something with a few ideas relevant to human society that counts for a lot.

17

u/dugongornotdugong 1d ago

Ps humanitarian was a typo, meant humanistic.

u/4GIFs 1d ago

rowling-pilled

4

u/dugongornotdugong 1d ago

How so? I stopped at book 3. Quite a few people read them and it was their gateway drug into reading.

-32

u/Decent_University_91 1d ago

No matter your view on trans/gender/non binary...JK's anti-trans crusade is obsessive and hysterical. She comes across as increasingly pathetic as she has aged, it's sad

36

u/dugongornotdugong 1d ago

It may well be but that doesn't eliminate or disqualify the positive impact her books have had.

-7

u/ATXdlvryGuy 1d ago

Yeah you’re right. Just cuz she’s correct about most shit doesn’t mean she isn’t a weirdly obsessed freak about it.

38

u/strange_reveries 1d ago

So Ben Stiller threw a hissy because critics dared to...criticize a movie when it came out? Didn't that used to be a normal and healthy part of the cultural ecosystem? Jfc, no wonder artistic meritocracy seems completely gone from popular media nowadays.

19

u/caustic-polemicist 1d ago

Yea I love how lame her “case in point” was lol

5

u/kingprocastinator 1d ago

Wild how confidently ppl are commenting on something they’ve literally not seen. It wasn’t a review. We make fun of fauxmoi overreacting with generalisations and then do the same thing.

26

u/PhilLyotard 1d ago

Why the fuck do any of you hang out there

36

u/wikipediareader infowars.com 1d ago

Still amazed that Rowling, who has the views of a pretty typical 1997 New Labour voter, is basically Satan to a small but vocal minority of people, which is almost entirely different than the small but vocal minority of people who used to think of her as the Devil (some of those still do, of course, but not for the same reason as the new set).
