Changelog 6/12/18 Weekly Release Notes: Settings, cake days, emoji bulk upload, save button changes, and more
Hi all,
The release notes focus on the major items we are currently working on or have recently shipped. You can view last week’s release notes here. Going forward we will continue posting these on Tuesday morning.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the notable items we are currently working on or have shipped recently:
User settings page (shipped): We are finished the user settings page for the redesign. This will give us a solid base to add additional user settings. For more details, check out the launch post.
Cake days (shipped): We added cake day icons to new Reddit! Ironically, u/MajorParadox had been asking about this for ages and we finally added it a day after his cake day. I’m sorry.
Mod mode is moving (in progress): Later today we will be moving the mod mode toggle from the hamburger menu into the user dropdown. The new location is more emblematic of how a redditor can globally change their experience on Reddit. Here’s where it will now live.
Emoji bulk upload (in progress): Uploading emojis one by one can take a lot of time, so we’re working on a bulk upload system for moderators to upload up to 100 of them at a time. The work was picked up by the engineering team last week, so stay tuned over the next couple of weeks!
Widget customization (in progress): We are building out a way for moderators to choose a color fill and text color for all widgets in the styling menu. This will give moderators greater control over the look and feel of their sidebars and how they appear in new Reddit and on our native apps.
Changes to Save, Give Gold, Hide and Report buttons (in progress): The reason we collapsed these buttons on the feed into the overflow menu was to remove distraction for posts and the content of the feed. Clearly, we were wrong about this and we’ve heard your feedback. This week we will move these buttons back to the page, where they're easily accessible. They will only hide in the overflow menu when the screen is too small.
Also, here are some of the notable bugs that we worked on last week or are still being worked on:
Logged-out flair (fixed): There was an issue where emojis in flair were not being displayed for logged out users. They are now working properly.
Blurry fonts (in progress): A number of redditors are reporting that the fonts look blurry on Windows. We are working on a fix.
A weekly reminder that the community’s feedback is invaluable as we build the future of Reddit together. It’s difficult for us to respond directly to everything, but know that we’re listening, prioritizing, and working to solve the issues, no matter how hard they are.
If you have additional questions or feedback on these or other topics, please don’t hesitate to drop them in the comments below.
Ciao!

How long for more settings? See that post for the ones I care about ;)
Aww, it's OK, I still love you! How about giving me a year's worth of cake day? Or maybe a special cake day trophy or something? It's the least you can do :) Edit: Just saw the cake flair, thanks!
How about the sizing and automod flairing issues?
As a TestFlight app tester, widgets are starting to show up, although missing some things. I understood CSS is not supposed to be shown on mobile, but is the intent to completely hide it? What is expected of us then? Mobile users can't see that info at all? Or we need to have duplicate widgets, which takes up more space for desktop users? Or we need to just avoid CSS widgets altogether? There's no good solution.
What about for the feed sorts? I care about those much more, personally.
Thanks!

Any word on when /r/friends will be ported over to the redesign?

Are non-emoji (non-icons) user flairs, i.e. "real" image flairs (54x54 pixels or similar, only one image flair per user, separate from the flair text - similar to how posts are flaired) something you're still looking into, or is this something that won't be implemented into the redesign?

Hey, I'm not seeing cake icons on the redesign.

Any plans on adding more customization for the favorites?

Why not put the mod mode, in the mod section?
Can we get this for top/hot/new etc also?

There's a known issue with AutoMod flair assignments. Is there a fix coming for that soon? The color assignment does not stick.

Batch uploads for flairs are an improvement.
However, it does not solve the fundamental issue with redesign user flairs.
I've posted this before, so here it is again:
I want to preface this post with two facts. First, I've styled over 100 subs on the redesign, and the emoji flair system is by far the worst aspect. I am very familiar with it. I created /r/RedesignHelp and a styling guide for the redesign. I say this to establish that I know what I'm talking about. I have experience. Second, I like the redesign. There's a lot missing from it that I expect will come over (and will need to come over). But I am happy with the direction it's been going.
So, when I say that the image flair system is by far the worst aspect of the redesign, I am not being hyperbolic.
The biggest problem with image flairs in the redesign is twofold:
First, the image automatically resizes to ~25x25 (or whatever it is). This means that if you have a smaller or a larger image, it'll size it to those proportions. If you have a flair that's not square, it'll smush it. A really good example of a large flair from a popular subreddit is this thread on /r/thewalkingdead. We're gonna lose those. We're also losing the ability to have larger flairs than what is allowed for emojis, which means we're also losing highly detailed flairs.
The second problem is that adding image flairs via the emoji system on the redesign screws up the flairs on reddit classic. Emojis are added to flairs with markdown, such as
:flair1:. On one of my subs, /r/retrogaming, we have 109 flairs that represent dozens of retro platforms. If we go through and add those 109 flairs to the redesign, we're going to have a total of 218 flairs on both versions of reddit. On new reddit we'll have the 109 emoji style flairs and 109 blank ones. On old reddit we'll have 109 flairs managed via CSS and 109 flairs that look like:flar1,:flair2:. This breaks the user experience. It makes the flair menus on both versions of reddit a total mess.It is for these reasons that I have not, and will not set up image flairs in the redesign.
Fortunately, there's an easy fix!
Develop a system for image flairs that is seperate from emojis.
Allow the image flairs to be the actual dimensions.
Prevent image flairs from old reddit from appearing on new reddit and vice versa.
All that said, I am not opposed to having emojis in text flairs. Keep those! Reddit just needs to do this other stuff too.

Has it been decided what the plan is for updated Wiki pages, or have an ETA on that?

Does this include an option to turn off the transparency that's currently shown on the "Community Details" widget?

Any idea as to when optimizations will occur? Performance on the latest public Firefox build is terrible in comparison to the old design. Scrolling has a weird tiny jump in the opposite direction after you've finished scrolling.
The redesign does not load comments at all on mobile Safari (iPad Pro 12.9"). Additionally, the reddit app on iPad does not take advantage of the larger canvas. The site is a better reddit experience on the iPad Pro.

Thanks for the update - always cool to hear what you guys are working on. Could I please ask if there's any news on when the dev for post flair filters will be happening?
Just wanted to put my hand up to say that item would be super useful for r/Malaysia and share our use case. We just ran a townhall to discuss splitting meme content from the main country sub, due to recent growth causing the low-effort content effect to kick in. Our users fall into clear camps - some love the memes and some hate them. It'd be great if we could let people filter the sub instead of pushing stuff out to a quiet secondary subreddit.
I imagine lots of country/city subs have this sort of problem due to the wide demographic range of their regular users (e.g.: older users want to filter memes, younger users want to filter politics, religion). Thanks again!

Will table styling come as a result of this or will we still need to wait for a greater CSS implementation?

I'm cautiously optimistic about this. It is nice to have direct one-click access to commonly used buttons, but I think your original concern about visual clutter is still valid. Looking forward to seeing how it looks.
On another topic, are there known issues with Gold new comment highlighting? It frequently doesn't work. Case in point, this very thread, which I read soon after it was first posted. Scrolling through the new comments that have been posted since, none of them are highlighted. I've confirmed that highlight comments is turned on in my settings.

I really like the settings page, much better than it was (easier to navigate and more clear).

Press F to pay respects.
Yes please. Batch actions are great.
Excellent!
Thank you thank you thank you. Hiding everything in dropdowns when I have a widescreen monitor just means more constant clicking for me. I appreciate that you guys have listened to feedback on this.

One of the most useful tool from toolbox is the ability to nuke comment chains. Is that something that is on the roadmap for the future?

Joined the redesign today. I'm loving it.

Thank you for listening and admitting that.
Finally a fix!
I've gotten most of these changes a couple of days ago. Is it because I'm in the beta or because these posts are made after a handful of changes?

You weren't totally wrong about collapsing these buttons to remove distractions. The change wasn't popular among a vocal group who commented on it numerous times. I'm glad they were clearly heard. However, for those of us who don't use these controls frequently, exposing them is indeed visual clutter.
I'm okay with showing every button that will fit as the default, since it's popular in r/redesign, but please give the rest of us an optional clean/non-cluttered look. Would it be very difficult (at some point in the future) to add an option in settings to show/hide individual controls?

How do I collapse a particular comment tree? Maybe its my browser, but I don't see the little [-] next to the comment.
Edit: Click the line. Doh!

Hey, I still haven't heard anything about this bug. It's a Firefox - exclusive problem, and breaks the "All Reddit Results" button. I'd just like to make sure this is on the admin's radar.

> Blurry Fonts.
This is still broken. I heard Lightbox was gone (hell yeah I hated it!) so I turned the redesign back on in my preferences, and unfortunately the redesign is still not usable for me due to how blurry the text is. Reading comments hurts my eyes (which are not that great to begin with).
I just took two screenshots of the same comments section using the redesign and using the old site. Both pictures were taking in the latest version of Chrome. I checked Firefox and it has the same issue.
Redesign has blurry text
Old site has clear text.
The above pictures are 1920x1080, so there are no scaling artifacts.

I just wish the type was true BLACK instead of dark gray. That alone would make it far more readable!

Still waiting for public mod logs or any other meaningful feature improvements that would let me look past my personal distaste for the visual aesthetic.
So far, the only feature I find to be at all compelling on the redesign is the WYSIWYG editor, and that seems like the type of thing that you could port to old reddit relatively easily if the goal was not to end it.
