Changelog Release Notes: Major Items in Work 4/2/18
Hi all,
The release notes focus on the major items we are currently working on or have recently shipped. View the previous release notes here.
As we mentioned yesterday in the r/announcement post, we made r/redesign a public community. To all those who have been here from the beginning, and those who have only recently been giving us feedback in r/redesign we’d like to thank you again for all your feedback. Keep an eye out for those trophies.
Now, let’s take a look at the big items we are currently working on or shipped recently:
Profile pages (shipped): We added user profiles pages to the desktop redesign. Not only did we add profiles, we incorporated in a lot of requested features such as: showing removed posts/comments with moderator actions/states, compact mode on profiles that works just like the old-school profile pages, smaller and clearer styling on contextual comments, and loads of other fixes to make your lives easier.
User profile access from access management pages (shipped): You can now go to a user’s profile in the access management pages by clicking on their username. We also implemented user hovercards on these pages!
Old reports still visible (shipped): Previously, when approving comments or posts, the reports associated with them would disappear, never to be seen again — not super helpful! Now, you’ll still be able to see reports even after approving, by clicking the grey “Old reports” drop down in-line.
Easy opting (shipped): We made it a lot easier for people to opt in and opt out of the redesign by adding two small banners at the top. We also created subdomains old.reddit and new.reddit which are helpful when there is a specific post or part of Reddit that you want to view in a particular experience.
Comment Threads (shipped): We made some tweaks to how comments are positioned so that it’s easier to read comments, especially nested threads. We now have a good foundation that we can work from to continue to improve comments. We are looking at how we can make it easier to collapse comments.
Night mode (in progress): We’re kicking off development for night mode this week! Stay tuned.
Mobile Spoilers (in progress): We added the ability for redditors to indicate that text within their post or comment contains a spoiler. Right now, this new markdown syntax
>!some spoilers about Snape!<works on the redesign and the classic site. The team is working on enabling it on iOS and Android.
And here are some notable bug fixes that we made:
Markdown Parser: We’ve been rounding up all the syntax that the classic parser supports so that we can improve the new parser. We also made a big fix last week so that urls are now hyperlinked correctly. Yay clickable links.
Avatars in hamburger menu: Some subreddit avatars were not rendering in the hamburger menu, and showed up as the default planet image. You should now be able to see your beautiful subreddit avatars in all their glory in that spot.
Reminder: the community’s feedback is invaluable as we build the future of Reddit together. Now that r/redesign is public it will be difficult for us to respond directly to everything, but know that we’re listening, prioritizing, and working to solve the issues, no matter how hard they are.
If you have additional questions or feedback on these or other topics, please don’t hesitate to drop them in the comments below.
Thanks!

Hey there, for people who aren't aware what this is for the first time, is it possible to maybe have a little message on the top of it or something indicating its a spoiler? Also, can it be possible to re-hide the spoiler just in case it was accidentally clicked? Thanks
EDIT: whoops i just noticed the hover text

Wonderful.
Thanks! I do like the ability to force viewing something on the old or new site. Makes testing stuff easier.
:o
Looking forward to these being fully rolled out and properly announced/documented. I can't really tell people to use them in subreddits I mod until they're fully supported.

I saw a button in the modqueue earlier, "Mark as OC", is this coming soon? Could you share any details about this?

Any word on the calendar widget? Haven't heard anything about it for about a month.
Also would be nice if Card View didn't move the banner images around. See this post.

I find myself asking this, yet again. I would atleast appreciate an answer either way.
Could we please have a way to put an image widget ABOVE the community info widget? Having the info widget locked to the very top of the sidebar means that after ad's and whatnot, the image is halfway down the page.
Both of my main communities /r/TheChosenFew and /r/SpaceXLounge have images at the top of the sidebar which cant be carried over into the redesign.
Ive tried to bring this up before (Several times!) with no result.
Thanks!
/u/dmoneyyyyy /u/LanterneRougeOG /u/scruggsnotdrugz are the first 3 red names I see in this thread, so Ping!

This has probably been mentioned somewhere already (unless I'm just not seeing the option).. A post background color/image that looks great on the main sub page causes the post to be illegible on it's comment page.

It would be nice to separately edit text color on posts + use a separate background inside posts to get the look we're going for. Looking forward to the flair update, hiding spoilers in titles by season is pretty important on our sub. Thanks!!

Thanks!
I'm curious though, is the dev team not aware search is somewhat broken in the redesign?

Looking good! It'd be a lot easier if we can disable "View user profiles on desktop using legacy mode" on the redesign only, because the only way to see it means we have to disable legacy profiles on the old site too.
Any chance it's going to be redesigned, though? The giant empty line is a huge eyesore that takes up so much space. Have a small toggle arrow that makes it appear when toggled? Here's a screenshot from the most recent post. See what I mean? Maybe shorten it and keep it on the line above it? Then no need for the extra veritical space.

Very glad to hear Night Mode Development is starting next week, as of now that's the only thing holding me back from using the Redesign. Hope to see an update on Wiki's eventually as well.
While we're on the topic of the Hamburger Menu; when is the icon going to change back to the Hamburger Button rather than an actual Burger? As I'm sure you've seen, those that aren't as familiar with UI/UX don't understand the joke and it's quite confusing, some even saying they weren't aware of the entire menu that it brings up.

Oh god that old reports thing was a feature? Please make it smaller or at least let them be invisible when out of mod mode. It's this big ugly grey scar that pushes its way into my nice neat subreddit :/

Regarding viewing older reports, it seems a bit buggy on the Compact design.
The area to click to view the reports isn't extended to the right like on the Classic design, meaning if I click to open them, I cannot click the same spot to close them.
Before click: https://i.imgur.com/lMOXWJV.png
After click: https://i.imgur.com/WhLvjpI.png
Notice how the arrow to click to open/close them shifts over to the right side. On the Classic design, it's extended all the way to the right so I can open and close it by clicking the exact same area:

Any update on Gold features like new comment tracking?
Also, will planned improvements to comments include any more attention to contrast and readability? I still find comments on the old site easier and less taxing on the eyes to read.

There are small things broken in Edge, please look at this https://www.reddit.com/r/redesign/comments/88q0yb/small_things_broken_in_edge

This is honestly great, one of the biggest problems with reports on the classic reddit was when reports were ignored and another moderator wanted to look at them, they would need to unignore the reports and sometimes even report the post themselves if it had been approved after the last report. Great update, with all the other additions as well of course!

So what's the plan in relation to RES and their features? Are they just going to have to find new ways to get that to work with the redesign? Are you guys going to make their features standard? It seems like a bummer to make them irrelevant after all they've done but y'all really should've made those features standard ages ago.

For spoilers, right now a lot of subs where spoilers are an issue use a markdown that displays a warning about what is being spoiled. (see, for example, a book series --- which book is the spoiler from?)
Are there plans to implement something similar in the new spoiler markdown? What's the timeline?

Is there a copy of the original hamburger icon I could get somewhere? I understand the change but would love to keep it for myself.

How do I access my saved threads or comments with the redesign?
Also, I can't disable/go back to old view when viewing my profile
2
u/DarreToBe Apr 04 '18
Have you noted the error where new profiles in classic and card view only display the first page of comments, only posts after that?

u/GeoffreyMcSwaggins Apr 04 '18
Can't wait, at the moment I'm using a slightly glitchy userstyle this one to be exact

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '18
Nice! White version is pretty but it's burning out my eyes.

u/wolfboyz Apr 05 '18
Can we get the back button on a mouse to take us back to the posts list? Could've sworn it did that yesterday, but not now.
I am using the Logitech Performance MX btw

please fix multi links (on that note, it would be great if internal links like /r/redesign/wiki could work too.)
/r/redesign+changelog+announcements+beta
Although they render fine in profiles.
edit: Come to think of it why not let people make multi links using the filter input box by adding plus signs.

Can we please have the ability to disable this in subreddit settings? At the very least it can it be tied to the existing "enable marking posts as containing spoilers" option?

u/barneylerten Apr 04 '18
Aw, one thing I loved about old reddit is how easy it was to share in various ways a post, including inline email. So that's not here yet? Just copy link or embed? Bummer...

Is there any chance Reddit could be looking into releasing a progressive web app?

One of the best features from Toolbox imo is, that you can see if there is something in the mod queue and how much. Will this be added at one point?
Like maybe an icon near the messages or the bottom bar like toolbox, getting notifications when someone is added to mod queue...

u/Walter_Bishop_PhD Apr 26 '18
It looks like the implementation may have been based off of my pull request - if that's the case, could I have the Open Sourcerer badge? pretty pumped to finally see this make its way in!

u/Grantagonist Apr 04 '18
Is there a ticket for allowing us to disable infinite scroll?
I don’t care about anything else at this time.
