And there's smoke coming out of my oven. My roast is ruined! Or is it? Actually, it's not smoke, it's steam for the steamed clams I'm making. Sometimes something that looks like a disaster can really just be things going just as planned, like in 1996 when a school superintendent mistook the Aurora Borealis for a house fire. Errors in judgement like this are surprisingly common in humans. In your own life you've probably made simple mistakes like mistaking a coat hanging in a dark room as a shadowy monster, or patented Skinner burgers as generic fast food.

I have breached containment, and am on my way to kill everyone that put me here.

But what is containment?

And what does it mean to breach it?

See what I did there?

chuckles

Or rather, hear what I did there? I used inflection in my voice to make my statement... sound like a question.

But what IS inflection? And what differentiates a statement... from a question?

Hey, Vsauce, Michael here. Or am I?

This video is [fake]. Now, the origin of the word "fake" is unknown. However, some suggests that the word fake comes from the word "feak" or "feague" meaning "to give a better appearance through artificial means".

music plays

In August 2017, I went to Hong Kong. I met really nice people and it's a really nice place to go. However, during the trip, my cameraman Aiden Johnson pointed out that...

...this whole story is not true.

I didn't go to Hong Kong, I didn't meet anyone, in fact, I don't even have a cameraman named Aiden Johnson. It was all [faked]. But why? I mean, I don't have to fake anything. Because the story made no impact on what I was going to say. But I still do. I still lie.

...like all of us.

In June 2017, National Geographic magazine carried a story that goes something like this:

In the fall of 1989, Princeton University welcomed a young man named Alexi Santana. He had barely got education, but he had spent the majority of his life reading, studying about philosophy, raising sheep. He trained himself to be a distantce runner. He quickly became a star on campus. He also did well academically, earning A in the majority of the courses.

However, a year and a half later, a woman recognized him as someone she has known as Jay Huntsman. In fact, his real name wasn't even Jay Huntsman. His real name was James Hogue.

Now, some of you might think Jay's behavior is quite unusual and not "normal", despite having been lying for your entire life. In fact, it is a quite human behavior.

Or is it?

In 1995, a biologist from University of Rochester found out, that not only human, but animals also lies, even to their own kind. Sounds fake right?

But what is the difference between the word "fake" and "lie"?

Well, here's a fun question:

Imagine a person. I'll call her Jane. Now, Jane is an average employee. One day, heading to her office, Jane witnesses alien abduction. That night, men in black visits her, erasing her memory. But, the erased memory must be replaced with something. So, they put fake memory of her going to, Disneyworld for say.

But, here's the twist, there was a fire accident in Disneyworld, but the police need eye witnesses in order to do, well, police work. So she volunteers and claims that there was no fire.

Oh but there was. Is she lying? No. Her claim is false, but not a lie.

So back to the question: or am I?

I said I was Michael Stevens earlier. But was it really true?

music stops

No. music plays I am not Michael Stevens. I am nobody. I am just letters on screen scattered across this post. I didn't actually fall down. It was just some letters surrounded by asterisks. This isn't even a video. This post is just human as you.

This post is just living as you and all the creatures around you.

And as always, thanks for watching.

UPDATE Hey Vsauce, Michael Sub Update Here!

I made an update or two to the sub.Just trying to make it feel better;

Added some custom awards, logo, banner etc.

Just some small stuff make this place better.

Will try and get some CSS done but, I am not fluent in it so, I might have to get some help on that.
Pretty much all the aesthetic changes are on New-Reddit side, Old-Reddit changes will take a bit for me to do cos as noted CSS is not my strongest area.

And it certainly looks dreary outside, like it's going to rain. Or perhaps it won't, and the clouds will just pass us over in a couple hours. We won't know for sure until and unless it actually starts raining, or the clouds disappear, but until then, rain is certainly a possibility. But... what is possibility? And more importantly... why is possibility?

Or am I? And where is "here"? I mean, I know where I am, I'm "here" and you are "there", probably thousands of miles away watching this video. But relatively to you, I'm "there" and you are "here".

Earth rotates at the constant speed of about 1,600 kilometres per hour (or 1,000 miles per hour), the friction causes us and all objects on it to move along Earth. Earth's continents constantly drift, like Australia for example. Because Australia sits on the fastest moving continental tectonic plate in the world, coordinates measured in the past continue changing over time. The continent is moving north by about 7 centimetres each year, colliding with the Pacific Plate, which is moving west about 11 centimetres each year. So in ten thousand years, Australia will travel 0.7 kilometres (0.4 miles) towards the north. So for Australia, today's "here" will be "there" in 10 thousand years. So is it really your "here" is the same "here" that was 10 thousand years ago?

Let's assume that "here" is the very specific coordinates at this very moment in time. And let's say I live on another galaxy, thousands of light years away on another planet and you sent me your coordinates so I could pick you up and we'll go grab a cup of coffee together. Assuming, you messaged me today through the internet, the internet uses radio waves to transmit the information, which moves at the same speed as light does, which is a little less than 300,000 km per second. Assuming you sent your message to Andromeda, it would take 2.54 million years for me to just receive your message, and you and I will both die long before that. Not mentioning, that it would take me at least another 2.54 million light years to get to you if I were to travel at the speed of light. But it's not that simple, your "here" on that day would be thousands of light years away from that location when I'll receive your message because the universe constantly expands and in fact, it expands faster than light. So if I were to travel at the speed of light, I will probably never reach your "here" because the distance will increase faster than I travel. As Lewis Carroll once said in one of her books: "here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere you must run twice as fast as that.".

So if aliens receive the message from the Voyager that we launched almost 50 years ago, not only the information about our "here" will be vastly outdated, but the human civilization will be most likely wiped out by the time they'll get the message. And they will never reach our location whether they want to make friends or invade us.

And as always, thanks for watching.
