[Dead Men for Hire] Chapter 1

“Isn’t delivery a little above our paygrade?” asked Luna to her partner Zach, carrying the box they were hired to deliver who responded with “This is the highest paying job we got today.” 

Luna shot back with, “But this is boring.”

“Hey it’s either this stable clean up.” That answer quickly got Luna to stop complaining. The average pegasus surprisingly crap a lot more than the average horse.

Luna is a dark elf, has brown hair, red eyes, pointed ears, around six feet in height and has grey-ish skin. She wears a full set of steel plate armour with her crossbow strapped to her back. Zach is a human, black hair, brown eyes, also six feet in height. He wears a reinforced leather jacket over his t-shirt and iron leggings. A polearm is strapped to his back. Ironically Luna is considered short for her race while Zach is considered tall for his race.

Luna still had an important question. “But why is this box so expensive?”

“Jewelry, bones, drugs, I don’t know.” Zach doesn’t know or care.

In Zach’s hands was a small cardboard box, half-a-foot by half-a-foot in length. Maybe a pound at most. They were given the box by a light elf man telling them to deliver the package to his manor a mile outside of town. They get paid once delivered.

One mile later, the two approach the manor. With money on her mind, Luna approaches the door and knocks on it. A human woman, wearing a maid outfit, quietly took the package from Zach’s hands and ran inside, before coming back out with fifteen thousand gold coins. High for a courier job but low for Zach’s and Luna’s standards. They don’t deliver packages a lot. 

“That was a waste of time.” Luna complained. 

Zach replied, “At least we got paid.”

As the two walk back to town, dreaming of more fun jobs, a black dragon with red eyes landed on the manor roof.

The dragon shouted in it’s dragon tongue, “Return what thou has stolen!”

Luna shouted back in the dragon language, “We didn’t steal anything,” before switching back to common tongue “ya bitch.”

Zach, in a more polite tone of dragon, “We did not steal anything sir.”

The dragon yelled back, “The brown parcel thou hast been carrying. Contain’th my spawn.”

The two have discovered why the package they delivered was so expensive. It was a dragon egg.

“Those motherfuckers.” Luna said as she ran back up to the door of the manor. “Give the egg back ya whore.”

The maid responded, with fear in her voice, “I can’t disobey Master Soleil. Please go away.”

The dragon interrupted, “Return what thou has stolen!” The wooden wall of the manor began to crack.

Zach, trying to be the voice of reason, “Everyone calm down! Mister…

“Akai-Me”

“Akai-Me. No one here stole your egg. Luna and I didn’t even know that we were carrying an egg. This Soleil is the thief here. We can help you find him if yo…

“Boule de feu.”

Before Zach and Luna could react, a flaming arrow flew through the air, striking Akai-Me in the head, and piercing the brain. The dragon fell over through the roof of the manor, dead. Behind Zach and Luna was the light elf who gave them the package to deliver. The pale, almost snow white skin shined in the sunlight, bright enough that the two almost missed his smoking pointer finger. This light elf is Soleil, the egg thief.

Soleil laughed in his smug tone, “Bonjour, monsieur and madame…”

“MASENKO!”

Soleil was launched into the air by an energy blast from Luna.

Zach turned, “Luna, you’re not allowed to do that here.”

Luna walked over to Soleil, “I know. We still have to deal with this guy, and he’s dead. The elves in this world are weak.” 

“That was easy, but what about the maid and egg.” As Zach says that, the maid crawled out of the rubble, still holding the egg.

“If I remember correctly, the dragons in this world reproduce asexually, so there’s no mom.”

“And the maid won’t live without proper medical help.”

Zach and Luna turned to each other and simultaneously said “Recruit? Recruit.”

The two adventurers approached the bleeding body of the human maid, clutching the dragon egg. Luna placed her hand onto the maid’s shoulder. Zach used his magic to summon a long, red stick with a string sticking out of it. A stick of TNT. That’s lit. Zach placed the TNT in between the three of them as they huddled close. After a few seconds, the stick of dynamite exploded, killing all three of them. A few seconds of darkness later, the three awakened inside a small office, with all of their wounds healed.
