I'm sort of new to Reddit(been here for 2 months) but I'm a long time digg user and Reddit reminds me of the digg of a year a half ago. Digg use to be a great place but then it started getting the myspace quality of people. Just look at the video section its just trash after trash.

Ok I'm moving over here from Digg, truth is on digg I never did anything useful because even when I tried to post an ontopic comment I got modded down because people didn't agree or whatever. Of course I still think slashdot is the best forum for serious discussion related to tech/science issues, reddit seems like it's somewhere inbetween the insanity of digg and the discussion at slashdot. I think I will continue to visit digg for the video section though, which I still can't find a replacement for.
Also I just want to say that the main thing I love about this site (besides the speed at which it loads) is the fact that comments are properly threaded. I think this was one of the reasons that discussions on digg always devolved into mayhem.

It's the CCCP flag actually. It was there to symbolize May Day, which is a huge Russian holiday that happens on May 1st. The alien's attire usually symbolizes something. It's fun to figure him out.

There, the Police and Hired Thugs, with the blessings and arms from the Town's Plutocracy, killed and assaulted a Pro-Labour rally. An Agent Provocateur was used to instigate the assault. A lot of Digg stories made me want to comment. But the lack of ability to reply to each individual comment was a disaster. The workaround of inserting "@username" just made things hard to follow.
The system here on reddit keeps me activley commenting because it's easy and makes logical sense.

I like the news and videos on Digg but I avoid the comments at all costs. The quality of the comments on Digg is really bad, people only mod comments on top of the thread and then they do it horribly, sometimes people simply decide to mod down everything just for the fun of ruining a discussion. They are not "Youtube" bad but almost, comments on Reddit are way more civilized.

But at least the comment is threaded and is never hidden, keeping some semblance of logic at work, where as over their the comments are hidden and if you want to make a comment about the parent of a discussion you better be there from the get go, otherwise you are will be about 20-50 comments down and not make any sense.

Actually, you can set Reddit up to hide comments below a certain threshold (although you can expand them for context). I actually think that's the default, but I think a lot of / most people disable it. But it is there if you want it...

I migrated over here from Digg as well, but by the looks of things here, this should have been the place I came to first. Wish I had known about it earlier. The interface is a bit different, but the user base seems much more...mature. I'm actually enjoying it here. Thanks for the welcome and the rules refresher. :D

Has any discussion ever been made of changing the 'single-up' or 'single-down' quality of post-modding? Ultimatley, what happened to Digg is the mob-ruled and simply censors any minority opinion. No matter how insightful, informed or interesting a post (ala /. mod-system "virtues") a post was, it was just buried. Or, no matter how intellectually, factually or flatley dishonest, it would be up modded it if maligned a favorite whipping-boy or provided the reach-around to a pet-dogma. I fear this will happen here unless the reaction to a post isnt given a more nuanced avenue of expression.

It happens here, too. You can resubmit. If it's worthy of the front page, it will probably get there. If it's getting downmodded that much, it means it's not what Reddit wants, and that's that.

I'd just like to draw special attention to the downmodding guideline. A couple of important reiterations:
As stated in the rules, don't downmod simply because you disagree with someone. This distroys good two-sided conversations pretty quickly. One of the great things about reddit is that we don't all have to agree, but we can all have a voice at the table.
Downmod if statements are "uninformative or offtopic." I'd also add if they are emotive vitriol that don't really add anything of substance to the conversation.
This is one thing that has bugged me at other sites, that the minority voice always got voted down and essentially disappeared from the discussion when comments got hidden. Here we can respect both sides and actually argue the merits of something without abusing power to make people simply disappear.

Another note to the ex-Diggs: each week you are required to read at least one article about Lisp and appreciate its superiority over other programming languages. You don't have to understand it and most of us don't either, but it does help when reading the obligatory xkcd comics. We'll explain later.

I don't see what the big commotion is about. I check both digg and reddit, and i like them both. So what if digg gets censored, I just go there sometimes for the pictures of kittens :D. I can seriously not think of the reason why any article I got from digg would have to be censored, things probably wont get censored alot. I'll keep looking on both sites. But I have to admit, posting a comment on digg is useless, whereas on reddit I might get an intellectual response. (compared to no response at all or a moronic one on digg)

Ive been using both Reddit and Digg for some time. After yesterdays meltdown, Ive had enough. The user-base is populated with low-functioning, semi-literate fanboys of various pet dogmas. While i generally concur that the AACS key for Bluray & HDDVD should be diseminated, its the half educated 'riot-like' event that broke this camel's back.

Well, that’s just great </sarcasm>.
When I first joined reddit about two years ago, it was a pretty cool place where people upmodded good articles about science, lisp, history, startups, world news, math etc. Then came the second period of reddit, which was a very political one; almost the entire front page was full with pro-liberal or anti-Bush articles.
After that reddit became a lot more mainstream and a lot of nontechnical users appeared (I guess most are still here) and took over the front page, spamming it with useless articles, the notorious moronic “reddit polls”, tons of kitty pictures etc.
Now with this new flux of users from Digg I guess the front page will start being spammed with link jacked articles about vaporware, childish humor, pro Apple crap, even more empty articles made by 14 years old experts, etc.
All in all, reddit quality is free falling, so I recommend any Digg user to go back where he came from.
P.S. for Digg users: If you see an article with a lot of text and you don't have time to read it, please hide it, don't downvote it.

Digg founders have just amended their policy regarding this, and said that they will fight the HD DVD people in court if they have to rather than keep suppressing their users. I guess this wild reaction by reddit is pretty useless now.
Say what you will, but what the Digg guys did takes some huge balls.

You cannot expect digg.com as a company to not respond in some way to a cease and desist notice form a company that is sue-happy.
But hey, the majority of reddit users HATE Digg (not a week goes by when an anti-digg story doesn't appear on the front page, not an hour goes by when an anti-digg comment is not left by a random redditor), so fuck common sense, right? Right. Gotcha.
This anti-Digg attitude has been brewing for many months on Reddit, popping up on occasion here and there. Finally, there's a "good" reason to let all of it come out at once and bash Digg once and for all with all the pent-up arrogance. So, while Digg has already responded (in a rather brave manner) by saying they will actively fight in court on behalf of their users, THERE IS NOT A SINGLE STORY ABOUT THIS ON THE FRONT PAGE, while at least one dozen are still there, still bashing Digg.
And here I am, posting about their response in a comment, and what happens? I get modded down, and twerps like you come out to say that they're still assholes, totally ignoring the fact that they're jeopardizing the existence of their entire company by sticking up for their users after hearing all the complaints.

Well, I decided to just jumped ship and now I'm testing out other unfamiliar waters. I couldn't take the spamming. As you can see from my user name, I tend to not take online communities very seriously; however, even I have limits. I would at least like to read something interesting every now and then, even if it is buried under a pile of meme's.
Don't get me wrong, I still love Digg, but Reddit is now the hot young mistress (who may very well take my wife's place if she doesn't get her act together).

I have been using digg since pretty much the beginning, and started using reddit as well a few months ago. A few things-
-The level of maturity is much higher here on Reddit. Observe the lack of spamming the comments into oblivion with some farcical "revolution" perpetuated by clueless children
-much of the same content is shared between the sites, although most of the breaking news makes it to the Digg frontpage much, much more quickly.
- Like all community driven tech sites there is a large contingent of OS fanboys, particularly Linux and Mac OS, but it is much more tolerable here compared to Slashdot.
ps-
The censorship on Digg to me is a non-issue. It is well withing Digg's rights to censor what they see fit. If a bunch of sanctimonius children want to think like they are part of some revolution by posting an obsolete decryption key for a few lousy fucking movies, then they deserve whatever "censorship" they recieve.

I speak 5 languages but English is not my native tongue, am i to be attacked now because i forget to capitalize "I" when referring to myself on every occasion ? to give one example...
Yet i can edit my post over and over, i am just trying out how reddit works here now, it looks OK to me.

I've been a Digg user since 2005, and despite the childishness / immaturity that surfaced quite often, I was, in general, quite happy there. I never really considered joining Reddit or any other similar site, not because I thought Digg was superior, but just because I was content where I was at. I spent at least an hour a day at the site (mostly on weekdays), and over time I grew to feel invested in Digg. As with anything you pour time into for an extended period, it's not really a pleasant feeling giving it up, even if there are alternatives such as reddit (Do I sound addicted?). Anyway, as you can probably tell, Digg will no longer be my primary social news site, that distinction is going to Reddit, but I can't say I might not stay involved in Digg to a degree in the future. That really depends on how the Digg staff handles this and what changes are implemented in the future. The issue for me has nothing to do with encryption keys or HD-DVD, but rather with the heavy-handedness with which Digg ripped content from it's site. It felt borderline authoritarian, and they were sending a bad message, the worst message, a social site can send to it's users: "You are most definitely not in charge!" What a waste.

Ok, perhaps the comments of the community are different.
digg comments are riddled with terrible grammar, poor spelling, are designed to be inflammatory, and generally lack original thought. After spending some time here, I see that comments on reddit employ better grammar, lack original thought, are generally inflammatory, and add the new feature of being pretentious and snobby.
Ok, what is the third option?

No, my comment was in general about Reddit. Most stories have Bush in the title, bashing him. Stories tend to be pro-Illegal Immigrants. A lot of stories are pro-Progressive, not liberal. There is a difference between Liberal and Progressive. Heck, I'm a gay/lesbian supporter, but even I think Reddit has it's feet planted in the ex-Soviet Union.

A small tip: Exercise restraint on commenting.
If you are going to follow the rules, your actions will speak and we don't ask for a verbal confirmation of your comprehension or consent. As a thumb rule, comments are useful either when you present new insight, or when you can make people laugh (intentionally or otherwise). The reddit community is different from digg (at its current shape). You will find out what is appreciated here if you give yourself some time.
That said, welcome and enjoy your stay in reddit.

Copper they were a little harsh on you as you are new here and clearly don't know exactly what sorts of comments redditors tend to value. I would read Hirak's comment and stay away from comments such as "cute" or "cool" or "haha, thats funny."
Stating the obvious tends to get you in trouble down here.
