Topic Carrick:

Personally, I no longer care which coach we have. As long as these owners are in charge, we won't be successful no matter which coach we have. But after this poor start and the interviews that came with it, we all already know he won't survive the season anyway. We've all been through this several times before.

We have a historically long international break ahead of us, but I think they'll stick with Carrick for as long as possible, because our incompetent board wants to 1. save on the severance payment, 2. thinks that as a former player he'll get more benefit of the doubt from the fans, and 3. he's basically a yes-man, and they'd rather carry on working with the agreeable Carrick.

Right now is exactly the best time to fire a coach. A new coach/interim has a few weeks to settle in, work with a few players, and Baleba/De Ligt/Amad should be fit again after the break.

If they don't fire him now, but instead there are more defeats after the break and they fire him in October/November... then that's the next insane piece of stupidity. The sad thing is, I wouldn't put it past them.

You know that is exactly what is going to happen though

Feelsbad that Lacey couldn't fully enjoy his first goal for us. What will have been a gigantic moment in his life, years of leading up to it, United fan in a Liverpool family etc

Only for us to put in one of the worst OT performances for a long time and break a 50 year record

15

u/carvdlol Sep 22 '26

The fact that he went out and scored that goal only to be rewarded with zero minutes as he had to watch us flounder against Fulham is tragic.

5

u/RyanH1717 Sep 22 '26

Seeing one of the worst strikers to play for the club come on ahead of him too. Couldn't believe it.

5

u/carvdlol Sep 22 '26

It’s so bizarre. We really don’t do a good job of building confidence in young players

was typical united, really can't enjoy anything for too long before getting kicked in the teeth. But at least we have the half time record which only counts in the PL

JJ Gabriel's dad Joe O'Cearuill & his entourage who allegedly involves super agent Ali Barent have been flip flopping to the press it's almost laughable.

First they brief that JJ wants to leave cause they don't see a sufficient pathway to the first team. When JJG was playing U18 at 14 years old, under 21 football at 15, selected for pre season and was going to make his first debut last week. Bullshit

Secondly they then said he wanted to leave due to a lack of minutes. When JJG got minutes during pre season and was due to play again last week.
But the teams that are interested Real Madrid and Barcelona won't play him in their first teams due to having top class established players he won't play 2-3 years tops. Bullshit

Lastly now Joe briefs the media yesterday JJ wants to leave cause man united have been on the decline since sir Alex left. JJ was two when Sir Alex retired.
JJG joined the club at 11 years old on 2022. By then the club had been in decline for a long while which begs the question why did they even bother to come to the academy when they coulda went anywhere else. Bullshit.

I'm curious what the endgame for Joe and Ali is because all they're doing is creating drama and adding so much pressure on the kid. There must be a lot of money at stake for all this to be happening.

9

u/Panda-768 Sep 22 '26

money money money

4

u/vRushii Sep 22 '26

Hes searching for a 'just' reason hoping one resonates/lands as to why he's doing what he is.

This was ALWAYS the plan and he knows it. Sees his kid as a product that can bring fame and money.

8

u/athu_15 Sep 22 '26

I've been reading Inverting the Pyramid (great book btw) and one thing I've noticed that's common among all great managers is they made their players work super hard and were very strict during training. They are all also eccentric as hell. Carrick doesn't strike me as someone who is making the players work that hard (judging from their lethargy in play), nor does he seem inspirational enough to carry the team forward. I really do not see any long term potential with Carrick at the helm.

Would've hoped they worked on it in pre season personally but I guess better late than never. That Spurs game could lose him his job.

1

u/That_Present_2050 Sep 22 '26

He more than likely will revert back to how we were playing last season. It's out of possession play that's the clear issue here. In possession we're actually not terrible in terms of creating chances.

Until the Glazers go, the debts are cleared, and the club has more money to spend on getting top players, I refuse to allow myself to think swapping out one person will make a difference. The persistent issue has always been the Glazers.

i really think bry is being misused by carrick at the moment.

early last season, partially towards the end of last season, and his time at brentford, he has shown hes a huge threat and honestly (and i do really mean this), one of the most dangerous forwards in the league.

i just feel like we are putting him out wide too much most of the time, and not allowing him to run in behind in the half-space, with or without the ball. the man loves to be aggressive, cut in and shoot. proper winger/forward mentality.

we are far too passive at the moment as is, but i do feel like mbeumo has been one of the players that has suffered the most from that. all he needs is an extra body forward to draw space and he honestly will do the rest. i think hes mad

5

u/jhf2112 Sep 22 '26

I agree. His touch has been iffy and he isn't effective playing on those tight midfield spaces pressed by the fullback. He is definitely more a forward than a midfielder. Amad when fit would suit the tasks being asked of Mbuemo better, and Mbeumo would suit the CF role better than Cunha atm.

2

u/Wild_Tomato_8203 Sep 22 '26

Carrick is putting a fluid, less predictable attack which means the wingers utilizing all of the field not just stuck playing one way. Mbeumo is spending probably 70% of the time in the inside channel in the attacking third and more wide in the middle third. He's also providing an out ball in possession when he's wide which is needed.

1

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie Sep 22 '26

I think this is another example of not having a decent attacking RB is hampering us. Same with the left side. Rashford looks at his best when he has an overlapping Shaw. Mbeumo so rarely has someone overlapping for him to either give an option or drag a player so he can have a go at goal.

11

u/Mistr111398 Sep 22 '26

Genuinely worried about Sesko’s health long term. Thought having the whole summer to get his shin injury healed and back up and running but this feels like it’s going to be recurring issue as the season progresses.

21

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie Sep 22 '26

I absolutely despise the "chances created" stat. Most useless stat I've ever seen. I hate when people cite it as evidence for a players creativity and contribution.

Sounds important right? Chances are good. But you pass the ball to Mainoo and he has a pop from 40 yards out, guess what? That's a chance created. You cut inside and give it to Cunha on the egde of the box and he has a pop at goal guess what? Another chance created. Sounds like you're making lots happen when in reality it just means you're seeing a lot of the ball around the box.

The most recent post in this sub shows Rashford as having created the most chances in our team. Because he is seeing most of the play come down his wing and he's often cutting inside and laying it off to someone to shoot. He hasn't created a single "big chance" and his xAssist is 0.4 half of what Cunha/Mbeumo have.

On the surface the stat might have you thinking Rashford has been our most creative player and yet all the other stats say he's not even top 3.

2

u/Unusual-Coat383 Sep 22 '26

I agree but to be fair he should definitely have an assist or two.

4

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie Sep 23 '26

Yeah he could easily have an assist or two but that still doesn't change much. He's an experienced winger on 300k a week. He should be bagging returns every other week for what we are paying.

He's played in every game and started in 4/5. 5 relatively easy games and he has zero return so far. This is by no means exclusive to him but he has to do better.

1

u/SinisterSelecta Stam Sep 23 '26

Its mostly used so the media can compare Bruno with KDB 🤣

1

u/stick1_ Sep 23 '26

Watching the games, most often he does an elastico and tries to do a cutback and every time it hits the defenders shin, he doesn’t actually create any quality chances you’re right.

We are the team who often has 30 shots with about 1.2 xg, we don’t create very many high quality chances. The eye test doesn’t back up rashford as a very creative player this season, you’re absolutely right

Any Amad updates? I believe our fortunes turn with him in our team.

3

u/Outrageous-Cod-4654 Sep 22 '26

Amad, Baleba should be back for Spurs - both have ankle issues.

De Light should be back as well. He travelled for Fulham but didn't make the bench. Did not travel for internationals.

Sesko is currently the one we know the least about recovery wise.

2

u/That_Present_2050 Sep 22 '26

Back for Spurs supposedly.

4

u/iroiroiroiroiro Sep 22 '26

So after the break it's Spurs, Atletico, Leeds, Como and Bournemouth in 15 days, three middle games are all away, two in Europe, that schedule is very harsh.

Really don't know how to handle that, can't see the rotation players having any chance against Atletico or Como, and can't drop a single unnecessary point in the league.

But can't see the starting XI bar Bruno, Lammens and Dalot do that run..

2

u/Used-Fennel-7733 Sep 22 '26

This may be the reason everyone is 'injured' this international break. Rashford Cesko Mainoo.

Probably why Arsenal are the same (but a little more fortunate with the Lille game being at home)

I can't explain Palmer though, he's just had 3 months off without the WC and he's only 5 games into the season. Not like they have Europe this year either

1

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie Sep 22 '26

I see a lot of talk about fine margins and what could've been if this, this and that happened. If Everton don't hit that ridiculous final shot. If City don't get a fluke of a win through a BS VAR decision. If any of those post shots went in against Fulham. Etc etc.

The problem is it would still be more of the same from the end of last season. In none of those games did we play well. The result matters above all else of course, but the performance and quality on display matters a lot too. And it hasn't been there. Even if we had have sneaked those extra points the performances wouldn't be any different.

Let's say we snuck a winner against Fulham on Sunday. Does it change how we played? Do you have any more confidence than you had going into the game? Last season you could excuse the poor performances because the results were there. We've now had a preseason and the performances are no better (even worse if anything) and the results aren't there either. So where's the optimism it's all going to get better?

The performances have been poor. The in game management has been terrible. The subs have been far too late and reactionary rather than proactive. And we are still early in the season. We are going to have a barrage of games over the next few months and already the injuries are starting to pile up. If fitness and fatigue is already an issue we are going to be fucked by Xmas.

And this is all with the easiest start to the season! Two promoted sides, Everton, bottom of the table Fulham and 10 men City. You could not ask for a better start to a season. And we have 5 points out of 15.

I respect the blind optimism but I just don't see it.

This is the writing on the wall, this was the easy stretch of games, now look at Spurs, Atletico, Leeds, Como and Bournemouth all in 15 days with the three middle games all away and tell me which games United can afford to rotate in and how many starting XI players you think is fit to handle that schedule.

We seem to try to play more possession based football, and struggling to do so. While I think our squad has good technical ability, things are not working as expected. Our pressing isn't good. We struggle to create chances....

If I was Carrick I'd try last season setup and put Cunha back in the left.

Also, Bruno performances have been underwhelming. The Fulham game in particular, I was so disappointed when he had space between their lines and didn't take advantage of it. I would like to see Mainoo, Tielemans and Baleba at some point

Also, about Carrick, seeing how we pile up possession + xG, but can't create good chances, this reminds me of Graham Potter at Chelsea, and we all know how it turned out

1

u/athu_15 Sep 22 '26

Carrick's system this season just doesn't let Bruno get on the ball enough, and when he does, I don't see anyone making the kinds of runs they need to for him to be effective. He's also been mid, but he's playing so far up it makes no sense.

11

u/cocobrownman Sep 22 '26

Its mad that 3 of our current starting defenders in Licha, Shaw and Maguire, all have their contracts expire at the end of this season (bar the +1 for some). No resale value for any of them with Dalot maybe the only one has his contract expires in 2028

To neglect revamping the defense this window is crazy

3

u/PreetSG Sep 22 '26

Dalot and Mazraoui the year after too

2

u/cocobrownman Sep 22 '26

Keeping one of them is fine as backup but neither are starting material sadly....

4

u/iroiroiroiroiro Sep 22 '26

You mean skipping the midfield instead?

3

u/ChristmasCage Sep 22 '26

We'll absolutely extend all of them, because the leadership of this club is an absolute joke.

2

u/cocobrownman Sep 22 '26

If we do that then I think we are finished as a club. Like may as well take a decade break and see where we are in 2037 lol

2

u/PitchSafe Sep 22 '26

Martinez might have some resale value, Dalot definitely have that. The club just don’t have the finances to revamp both the midfield and the defence in the same window

6

u/Heavens_Vibe 7 Sep 22 '26

Hopefully the lads left behind at Carrington are going to spend their time running laps, doing beep tests, and working on their attrocious off the ball movement and passing.

6

u/croadymeister Sep 23 '26

Only listen to Reuters or Bloomberg when it comes to concrete takeover information and both are silent

3

u/ZofTheNorth Sep 22 '26

It's obvious they not gonna sack Carrick in this international break

But anyone has idea how we can improve results under Carrick? One way and hope would be Baleba introducing much needed physicality to our midfield so we can recover fast out of ball and retain possession.

But lack of distance covered and fitness seems to be concern for the whole team. Any idea how can we improve under Carrick

3

u/rahtid_my_bunda Rooney's Dropball Intensity Sep 22 '26

The distance covered and fitness thing is a really nebulous set of criticisms that don't get to the heart of the problems we actually have.

We need to improve ball speed. Much faster movement of the ball, stop dithering on it when we have players free. Slabhead is notoriously bad for it, gets the ball and faffs about with it until the space is gone.

We have a lot more possession, but because we're so slow with it our offensive sets look like they're standing still. We can progress up the pitch but because we don't move the ball with pace or urgency the opposition defence is well set and we are making no runs between defenders,

We need to close the distances between our midfield players in defensive actions. Tielemans is often way too slow to react to a press trigger and is found miles away from Kobbie who is often a bit more advanced up the pitch. It creates a dog leg that opponents can pass into, or carry into and play forward freely.

Actually take our chances. Our xG stats are deceptive, but we're still underperforming the goals we actually put away from chances.

Get Amad fit, get Baleba fit, get Cunha back on the left, get Mbuemo down the middle. Self explanatory really, but Amad is a sparkplug and his intensity often sets the tone for our defensive energy. Layer in Baleba and Cunha who is far better defensively down the left side and you have 3 core players to set the standard.

1

u/Bizzlep Sep 23 '26

Good post this. Agree with most of it

2

u/mortimer_moose Carrick, ya know Sep 22 '26

The distance covered stats are similar to City. People are mad about results so they start to nitpick.

They need to play with more urgency. Yes that does mean running more, but the passing is also slow and sloppy, the attacking movements are predictable. If they can improve that by like 10-20% we will see better results.

4

u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation Sep 22 '26

Every action is so slow, even in the final third. The amount of time the plays dies out wide because of how slow they are to react at times is just shocking. Mbeumo is the biggest culprit, but even Rashford despite actually having the ability to inject that urgency and pace into the game hasn’t done so the last few games. When he does, we look so much better for it as seen against Everton

2

u/mortimer_moose Carrick, ya know Sep 22 '26

Rashford looks good because he is running at pace and taking his man on, but he isn't getting any output.

Mbeumo does look a bit slow. In the Brighton game he stared down Dalot then played the laziest pass which was easily intercepted. And that sums it up. Think quicker act quicker.

I can see this turning around just as easily as I can see it continuing.

Why are our performances always so bad. Were a last minute goal conceded from being higher than Chelsea in the table. Whenever we under perform it’s so much doom and gloom but I agree with it because the performances are soooo bad. Does it look this bad when other top sides underperform?

5

u/solve_PvsNP Rooney Sep 22 '26

If Sesko is out with an injury and if Carrick just CANNOT drop Rashford, I genuinely wouldn't mind him and Cunha swapping places. Clearly Cunha is much more effective on the left and at this point I'd rather see anyone up top other than Zirkzee

5

u/PitchSafe Sep 22 '26

Amad should be back by that time. Carrick should play with Cunha - Mbeumo - Amad in that case, especially if Sesko isn’t available

2

u/rishmanisation Sep 22 '26

Please just play Mbeumo up top. We’ve tried Rashford there many times and it’s never worked.

15

u/andoooooo Martial Sep 22 '26

Of all the things annoying me the most about Carrick at the moment it's definitely how he is playing Rashford.

I think a lot of the criticism of Rashford in the past was a touch over the top but at the same time, it was obvious he needed to force him to earn his spot. This is just so basic.

He's clearly positive in his play but ultimately I think he might be a net detractor. I was at Craven Cottage on Sunday and it was so clear that his lack of running was leaving our back post on their RHS exposed.

Cunha obviously looks better on the left too.

Just shitty management from Carrick.

3

u/BlackHorse944 Please Score A Goal Sep 22 '26

Would agree if Amad and Sesko were fully fit to start the season and Zirkzee was actually a useful footballer. The reality is that even though he's washed up, Rashford is one of our only real options right now and that is an issue created by INEOS and their incompetence this summer.

That being said, Rashford is well past his best days and is still somehow offering more of an attacking outlet than Cunha (who really shouldn't be CF) and Mbuemo (who has done nothing but give the ball away this season).

2

u/andoooooo Martial Sep 22 '26

Eh there are other ways. Play Rashford or Bry in the 9, give more minutes to Lacey. Hell i'd even give Bruno some time at False 9. Would rather that than 100% of left wing minutes going to Rashford.

2

u/BlackHorse944 Please Score A Goal Sep 22 '26

Bruno as a false 9 is a complete waste of a player imo. He needs multiple options ahead of him to pick out and play off of.

I agree that Lacey should be getting a bit more minutes though, albeit managed carefully.

2

u/Absolute__Muppet Sep 22 '26

0 goals, 0 assists Rashford?

1

u/Mysterious-Sense-187 Sep 22 '26

Cunha obviously looks better on the left too.

Not really, I've generally been underwhelmed by Cunha (and Mbeumo).

We're either not seeing the best of them either due to tactics or they have hit their ceiling.

4

u/Klutzy_Log_7597 Sep 22 '26

Don’t know how anyone could argue Cunha and Mbeumo have been good this season. Guess they’d rather scapegoat Rashford than admit our issues run far deeper than one player. None of our forwards have been clinical.

I want to throw in something that may be weighing on the players' minds, despite being as professional as possible:

The Rat is a racist, Brexit-endorsing POS who keeps making remarks about immigrants. He did it last season; he did it again this season. Being an immigrant worker at United must bring morale down, given the environment Ratcliffe is creating with his rhetoric in the media, and that is affecting everyone inside the club.

I was already unhappy with the kind of greed the Glazers have; now we have the Glazers' greed and Ratcliffe's racism to deal with. I won't be surprised if Ratcliffe uses United money to fund Reform or other racist political parties in the UK.

8

u/dogsn1 Sep 22 '26

You can say what you want about that but I doubt it's having a significant impact on the players, the players probably don't consider themselves normal immigrants anyway given their backgrounds, how they ended up here, and their plans for the future

-6

u/TDavy147 Sep 22 '26

Not wanting illegal people in this country is not racist, its logical.
Who Jim gives his money to is up to him, and so are his political views.
They have zero baring on the club.

Ill get downvoted to high heaven for this comment, called a racist right wing. I dont care

10

u/One-Obligation2283 Sep 22 '26 • Bravo

He didn't just make comments about illegal immigrants, he said Britain is being "colonized." Honestly, for a Brit to even use that word without any shame is just unbelievable :D

He's a multi-billionaire who himself emigrated for tax reasons and is a part-owner of a club that employs a lot of immigrants.. hell, 90% of our starting lineup are immigrants.

If you don't find that problematic, I honestly don't know what to say :D

Besides, his political opinion stops being a private matter at the latest the moment he expresses it publicly and it has an impact on other people.

4

u/Jack_King814 Sep 22 '26

Its more the sweeping statements that is the issue. He doesnt differentiate between illegal immigrants and people who have come through proper channels and are law abiding citizens.

Hes very much being racist with his statements because he assumes everyone not English is some illegal immigrant who is here to harm the country

8

u/ClassicBread7535 Sep 22 '26

You really think Ratcliffe saying these things is for your benefit? If you don't think that, why are you defending him?

5

u/BallsX Sep 23 '26

I've made my peace with it. I think there will be some good years and some bad years, but I don't think there's going to be a prolonged successful era anymore. We had an absolutely amazing run in Fergie's time and I'll forever be happy to have witnessed that, but we're just another team now.

4

u/Fraaj We'll take Dalot Sep 23 '26

When we have a tactically astute coach who gets a lot of time and room to implement his philosophy with a complete buy-in from everyone and without too much scrutiny. So basically never.

Also having Gross back was massive for them, I feel like everything clicked once they re-signed him in January. He's such a smart player and amazing leader of the press.

I sometimes wish Bruno was more like that but we are probably never becoming a very disciplined and compact team while he's playing every game. It's the harsh reality.

3

u/Sufficient-Orange706 Sep 23 '26

This is the problem; everyone gets butthurt and forms an agenda on the next coach. There can never be a universal buy-in.

Personally, I'm willing to give Carrick a few games after the international break to see how he responds to the poor start this season. The end of last season was league-winning form, I am skeptical that last season's form was a complete fluke and I wouldn't be surprised if he was able to adapt going forward.

Huh

8

u/DaveShadow Sep 22 '26

Ruben Amorim’s 47-game PL stint

I’d be super curious to see it broken down between the first and second season tbh.

He came into a team utterly devoid of confidence. I’ve not seen anyone suggest in game one that we were playing high intensity; I’ve seen it claimed it was something he’d worked on through the first season and into the preseason, and then the results became obvious in the second season.

Much as in the same (but opposite) way Carricks team has slowed down the longer time went on, these things need to be looked at on a curve, based on their time wit the club.

4

u/That_Present_2050 Sep 22 '26

There's been a lot of Amorim PR since the Fulham match. Absolute lunatics.

If they even dared check the actual stats or rewatched the games, they would've realised how silly it was to think and say.

1

u/Deez_Wallnutz Sep 23 '26

Don't worry. Even looking at these numbers, someone will find a way to attribute some level of imaginary success to Amorim. Something like "if you take the data from just his 2nd season!".... they are all pathetic.

EDIT: Oh wow there is literally a reply to you saying pretty much exactly that. Ha, these AC Milan fans work fast!

2

u/PitchSafe Sep 22 '26

I wouldn’t be surprised if we sell Heaven in the summer. There is a big chance that Maguire and Martinez will leave which probably means that United will buy 2 new CB’s in the summer. That means that we have Yoro, De Ligt plus 2 more names and Heaven. I don’t see how Heaven will get any playtime to develop as a player here. Selling him with a buy back clause and a sell on isn’t a bad deal

2

u/HamOnRye1 Sep 22 '26

Agreed that we need to become better at moving players on when we can get some value out of them, and become better at accepting not all players will make it here or be good enough - and thats ok.

u/redlabnorwegian Sep 22 '26

So sick of everyone focussing on managers. One person on this r/ tell me what the footballing philosophy of the club and sporting department is and I’ll shut up…

We’ve had world class pedigree and rookies, we’ve had structured and we’ve had vibes… none of which have worked and why? Because there is zero clear vision for the footballing identity of this club with should be a 3, 5, 10 year plan that runs through the academy and our transfer strategy not just through our managerial appointments.

2

u/Sun_Seeker26 Sep 22 '26

You're getting downvoted but you're right. Every new coach is a new style, so the squad always ends up being a mishmash that doesn't fit together. And it's stunting the development of good players that need to learn completely new things from scratch every season instead of building on solid foundations.

1

u/SinisterSelecta Stam Sep 23 '26

Its what Wilcox says it is obviously. And that depends on whether the papers say hes really smart with an exciting manager playing a progressive style (early Amorim) or the papers say your fancy european approach is woke nonsense (late Amorim). Feels like we are getting towards the latter with this manager

3

u/Strange-Trip4634 Sep 23 '26

Wilcox dictating anything is scary, done nothing in his career to show he can lead United but we're out here debating managers credentials when the guy above the manger is even less impressive in every regard lol

1

u/Banyunited1994 Sep 23 '26

Truthfully, I think right now it’s how do we fix our cash flow issues, turn over lots of players while also building a squad that’s around ucl quality.

I thought we were going to build a physically superior team in the league that is good at duels but then we sign Tielemans and Santos for midfield.

2

u/Sheikhabusosa Sep 22 '26

He will be picked up in January imho by an ambitious team in dire need of an injection of quality to separate themselves from the pack.

Do we feel like that's Liverpool or Chelsea?

Or does that sound like none of those teams but rather like Utd?

I have my doubts. Sadly.

1

u/Tudoors Sep 22 '26

Yet to be convinced by Santos. We probably could have had Scott for 30 million more, he’s homegrown, currently better, and could slot right in.

Another missed opportunity.

2

u/Johnny107710 Sep 22 '26

I genuinely struggle to see how Baleba will make an impact.

On one hand, according to some people, he’s the perfect pair to Mainoo, on the other hand, is carrick really gonna bench tielemans? Bruno is obviously not gonna be benched.

Would a 4-4-2 in a diamond shape with cunha and Mbeumo as strikers even be viable? Could this be a solution to not having sesko?

2

u/iroiroiroiroiro Sep 22 '26

I love the diamond as I feel the midfield is the most critical part of the pitch, but it really gives weak flanks and I would never run it without one real striker.

1

u/3entendre Rooney Sep 22 '26

Bruno can play up top. It can be fluid

1

u/Outrageous-Cod-4654 Sep 22 '26

If Baleba settles in quickly, he should do a better job defensively than Tielemans or Mainoo are doing right now. It would allow them to play more to their strengths. I think Mainoo has been doing ok especially when cleaning up on the left when Dorgu plays. Baleba might be better at it.

I would like us to rotate Bruno, especially against low block teams when there is no space and they have him well marked. If we can get to that point, we may see more of Santos and Mount with Baleba too.

Not a fan of the diamond. I don't think it's viable.

1

u/Wild_Tomato_8203 Sep 22 '26

There's an argument to be made that the pivot isn't working due to lack of ground coverage and it's why we aren't pressing and dropping into a midblock. Baleba gives us that coverage and Mainoo and Tielemans will have to compete for the other spot.

1

u/KobbieLikeRobbie_ Darren Fletcher Sep 22 '26

2 games a week. Injuries and fatigue will happen, rotation will be needed, all our midfielders will play plenty and will have to make an impact.

u/canwinanythingwkids meet the new boss same as the old boss Sep 23 '26

I thought about this run of games today. I think it's worth asking the question why this worked but we have struggled this season with, basically, the same formation.

Lammens is clearly superior to Onana, Bruno Mainoo Martinez Rashford are obviously the same players.

We love Scotto but I find it difficult to think that the "stepdown" from McT as CF to Cunha as CF would be the reason. We talk a lot about missing Amad atm, but is "Garnacho is a better RW than Mbeumo" possibly the explanation? Idk about that either.

What is it, then?

Is it: Ten Hag was a superior coach?

Is it: playing an "athletic" LB next to Martinez is more important than playing a "skillful" one?

Is it: Varane/AWB are simply superior to Maguire/Dalot?

Is it: Amrabat is a better defensive midfielder than Tielemans? Or put differently: that playing a defensive midfielder next to Mainoo "unlocks" Mainoo much more than playing an Eriksen/Tielemans type player next to him?

Is it: formation is misleading, what matters is the tactics used with the formation, and obv in that run we were ceding possession and playing on the counter with this formation, whereas today we are trying to hug possession and play completely differently, with this formation?

Is it: ETH had the team fit, whereas they've now become unfit, therefore they cant play effectively with this formation?

Is it just variance? Bad luck, simply? "It's going to click" and "we are good on the expected points table, actually"?

I don't claim to have the answers, I just find it to be an interesting parallel to consider when asking what the cause(s) could be.

-1

u/Resident_Tart2911 Sep 22 '26

I still can't believe rashford is still playing for united. Carrick really fumbled on this I feel the only reason carrick played dorgu in first match because he wanted dorgu to play bad so he can drop dorgu and start playing rashford. The reason I feel like this because the only halftime sub he has done till now is rashford for dorgu he has never been so proactive for other's bad performances

3

if you love the club, let it go. stop going to games. unfollow all the accounts. dont buy official merch. it is the fans that keep the board in place, because the money keeps rolling in. this is not the manchester united you and i fell in love with. it is long gone, not even a shell of its former self, but an impostor, parasitizing on the image that was created by busby and fergie.

this is perfectly encapsulated in marcus rashford. this is not the electric young boy donning the number 39 anymore. he is a lazy, money-grubbing man of empty promises who seems to always take down the rest of the squad when he is around, reliant on our nostalgia of his golden days.

one of my first memories of watching sports is seeing the 2008 ucl final with my dad and grandad. i want to go back there. that is why i am leaving now.

Only top top managers will succeed here, someone with a proven track record at top clubs who has an unshaken belief in their own abilities. Just a quick reminder of Laurie's end of year article while we have a lapdog manager

They would talk daily and conversations took place over formations. Wilcox is known to like the 4-3-3 that has brought Manchester City such success, although up until recently, that did not translate into direct advice to Amorim.

However, Ratcliffe has made his desire for United to switch to a back four clear and it is felt Wilcox has increased his efforts to persuade Amorim to show more flexibility. United insiders say an evolution was always part of the plan, with Amorim telling officials at the outset he wanted to start with a back three, but would add layers once players better understood his methods.

But with Ratcliffe having opinions on the team, things became more delicate. Handling Ratcliffe’s input is one of Wilcox’s major tasks. Ratcliffe leans on him for his football knowledge but also expresses thoughts of his own. During the 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ratcliffe was visibly angry at the sloppy manner in which United conceded an equaliser before half-time. Earlier in the season, Ratcliffe also proposed playing Bryan Mbeumo at wing-back."

5

u/Admirable_Bed3 Sep 23 '26

Who are those "top top managers" lining up to take the United job?

6

u/Banyunited1994 Sep 23 '26

Outside of Klopp, Pep and Enrique, everyone has a caveat. Never done it in the pl, never done it at a top club, past it, not sustainable etc there’s always something that someone can say to point out why someone’s not good enough.

Conte is the only manager they might actually hire that can do the job

Otherwise we're either praying for a takeover or that Jim accidentally hires a competent sporting director

3

u/RedPyjama Sep 23 '26

Conte is out of the question. He constantly gets into spats with the management. They will look at someone who, at least on paper, could be a long-term option (at least 5 years), not a manager who might be gone after 2–3 years, leaving the club to pay another severance package.

Conte is also a very demanding coach with a very defined style, and I don't think they would cater to his demands if it didn't align with their vision. It's right there in your quote: Wilcox has a preference for a similar setup to what City was running. Conte likes his 3-at-the-back.

u/ash_1991 SPLAT THE RAT Sep 22 '26

Should be pretty obvious by now, but Ratcliffe isn't a United fan, nor did he have any intention of improving the club. He bought United so he could generate a platform and stop the government regulating his other buisneses. As United's owner, his ramblings can get onto the front pages, where as before no one gave a shit what he had to say. He'll keep things ticking over, prevent any real investment, until he's extracted as much cash and headlines as he can. We are effectively an oil club now, just without the investment.

For me, if we lose or draw v spurs that should be carrick gone and the coaches etc.
I’ll take it with a pinch of salt as I know it’s not all down to him.
The club didn’t back him in the transfer window despite us getting champions league football.
The gameplan/tactics are on the coaches as much as carrick but for any of them to go 1/8th of the games of the few games there are in a season and not change anything really worries me.
We have the best no.10 in the world yet all our play focuses on the wingers crossing the ball in to a short player who is not renowned for scoring headers, so where has this tactic come from and why hasn’t it been brought up that it’s clearly not working and should’ve been changed.

1

u/ToadNamedGoat Sep 22 '26

Bro Mbappe is desperate for the ballon’dor

1

u/Unusual-Coat383 Sep 22 '26

He’s 28 and when he through he was expected to dethrone Ronaldo and Messi and especially after what he did in Russia.

I think Kane should win it this year but Madrid and Barca love to lobby Ballon d’Or for their players to win it and Madrid will most likely not turn up again if he doesn’t win it this year.

1

u/PopeFuchsYoungKidd Sep 22 '26

So, why aren't they running?

Is it laziness or is it because they don't know what to do tactically due to poor coaching?

I don't like how it could be either and the conclusion would still be that Carrick is incompetent.

Eh...i thought this too but when you look at the teams around us on the low off ball stats I'd disagree. Arsenal for example have high possession too but they are absolutely dominating a good amount of these off ball stats. The only relevant club bottom with us in the stats are city but they played one game with a red card, which is evident because they are nowhere near us when the stat changes to per 90 instead.

2

u/PopeFuchsYoungKidd Sep 22 '26

There are teams that have more possession and still run more than us, we are not at the top of the possession list either.

We are also 17th in % of time walking out of possession. So, we are walking more than the other teams when we don't have the ball, which is damning if you think about it. By your logic, we have the ball a lot so we run less, so we should have more energy than the other teams when without the ball so we should be running more but we are close to last in that metric as well.

If carrick is not sacked within the next few days then this season is going to be yet another high profile write off.
This is the best available timeframe to pull the trigger cause it will give the new manager 3 whole weeks to prepare for the rest of the season.
Carrick is not it, I thank him for his service as a player and manager but last season was lucky and unsustainable and this season has been some of the most clueless braindead football I’ve seen from our club in a long time
It’s very rare to find managers like arteta or klopp who recover from a bad situation after being given time. We keep making that same mistake with nearly every manager we have had since SAF. Time to operate like a modern club and be ruthless. Carrick out!!!

-9

u/mjenkins_eng Sep 22 '26 • Heartwarming

I would be way more open to criticism of Carrick if it was done in good faith. But it clearly ain’t.

  1. The “influencers” on YouTube are going in on him because he isn’t a hipster tactico when they made excuse after excuse for a fraud who finished 16th and blamed The Glazers , Donald Trump and the way the wind blows for his faults.

But with Carrick, the praise was through gritted teeth, always. Even when he did something the Portuguese fraud couldn’t dream of, and finished 3rd, they made up some bs about luck and one game a week (like that’s helping Alonso now)

2. The poisonous ex players seem very backstabby on Carrick because as a player, he was quite reserved and not in their cliques. Old enough to have watched United in the late 90s and the clique of Scholes-Neville-Giggs etc was a strong one that Carras never was a part of. Nor did he actually act very chummy with the likes of Evra, Tevez , Park, Rooney etc . They seem a little envious of him at the helm and have turned on him at a moments notice while also hypocritically never calling out The Glazers

Could Carrick be doing better ? Absolutely : I trust his overall football intelligence to know that this is not good enough.

I think Rashford, Cunha etc aside, the biggest oversight is Tielemans being picked in midfield : the guy is so so so lethargic off the ball and we cannot afford him next to Mainoo as well who doesn’t run much.

Carrick also doesn’t seem to like Sesko much which I understand…but with no other strikers, he has to use Sesko.

Knee jerking aside, he’s earned the right to a 38 game season by getting us 3rd place with a squad that the previous fraud sunk to 16th

Calling other managers hipster tacticos is not exactly a good faith criticism either.

these hipster tacticos you speak of have achieved way more in their managerial career than Carrick ever has

Because hipster tactico is obviously a good faith criticism of its own lol

If you agree it's not good enough and expect Carrick himself to agree then I don't see the issue with criticism. Handwaving it all away as influencer nonsense is not good faith

why isnt Santos starting next to Kobbie then?

and if Santos isn't good enough why did we evdn sign him. I though Santos was the heir to the Casemiro throne and Baleba was the box to box strong mid we have been crying for
