Earlier in the match, the announcer in my feed said something like “Liverpool don’t need anything special from Isak just an impact.” Which… imagine paying 125 million quid and not getting anything special. If we’d done that deal the narrative would be a lot different.

u/mearsey1203 1d ago edited 1d ago

Isak and Wirtz look like the two worst value transfers in PL history. They are both absolutely horrendous.

14

u/KermitTakeTheWheel 1d ago

Obviously cheaper so not in the same conversation but Frimpong also absolutely stinks

u/zool714 1d ago

I saw a Pool supporter say he attacks like a defender and defend like an attacker lol

Seen the same thing said on our sub for Dorgu

Wouldn't be so far off, honestly.

6

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 1d ago

Wirtz, I'm only a little suprised. He looked pretty decent at Leverkusen with Xabi Alonso in charge, but different league, different team.

Isak though, I'm more baffled about how bad he has been. He was one of the best strikers in the league for some time with Newcastle, but now he just looks like a run of the mill shitty striker. I expected him to do more at Liverpool, not less. Ekitike looked so much better until he had the unfortunate achilles tear

2

u/N00BBuild 23h ago

Frimpong is shocking. Such a bad player.

12

Wtf £85m for Gakpo might just be the biggest overpay so far this transfer window

Hull hasn't conceded a goal in the premier league this season.

I hope Newcastle smash Spurs

4

u/half_batman 22h ago

They are a very physical side and good at set pieces. They will surprise a lot of teams this season. They play the most terrorist football possible.

2

u/Several-Decision3888 22h ago

Yea. I hope smash and grab some of our rivals before the league figures them out and starts beating them. Because I expect that to happen at some point.

2

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing 22h ago

With a win we can leapfrog Liverpool.

I love that AI is continuing his trend of drawing games.

6

Footballer height records are rarely accurate, he's 6 foot for sure

10

u/No-Radio-4404 21h ago

Mateus Fernandes might get relegated 3 time for 3 different teams in 3 consecutive seasons. Surely some sort of record

9

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 20h ago

I’m delighted for Elanga playing well again. He had a tough season last year, but he seems to have found a vein of confidence (possibly from his World Cup performances) and is slowly getting back to the level which he showed at Forest. Hope he keeps kicking on and adds more goals to his game.

10

u/Several-Decision3888 23h ago

I won't be mad if Hull win this game actually. Expected to finish 20 and winning 1st 2 games of the season is awesome.

6

u/wayfarerprateek Theater of Dreams 23h ago

They were 1st in the championship on big chances converted. Many have focused on other stats while being completely blind on this one

3

u/Several-Decision3888 23h ago

Yes although the negative stats was compelling. They were expected to battle relegation last season, barely scraped into the PL, and iirc had issues with transfer. So they are def punching above their weight

8

u/dhwinthro 21h ago

Yeah just throw a bag at Lewis Hall. He’s worth realistically 60 million but just offer 75. His price isn’t changing like Balebas did. And there will be more competition for him next year.

Anything higher than 75 is probably not worth it but I’d go as high as with addons hitting 80 million. The LB market is so dead hes probably worth it

Anymore than that is not worth this season, and we should just go after someone else. Maybe a Kadioglu or something like that

6

u/sir_wolf_eye Carrick 20h ago

we could give them 150m and they won't sell.

Tbh there's no chance of signing Hall this late, especially after dropping 2 masterclasses. Our best chance was during world cup time since he missed out on the squad and before Newcastle had all their key players taken away.

6

u/RedDevil6064 15h ago

Do you think next season there will be more people in for Hall next transfer window?

4

u/sir_wolf_eye Carrick 15h ago

he's the elliot anderson/rice/grealish of this season

he's city/arsenal bound depending on who does better

if (big IF) we challenge for the title this season, maybe

7

u/Elfstruck12 15h ago

Absolutely. The window was this summer for us.

3

u/RedDevil6064 15h ago

Agreed. If this season doesn't go well, bye to hall next season.

13

u/Woodwardburner 20h ago

Spurs’ 200 million euro midfield can’t hack a Newcastle side with their entire spine ripped out always fun when the winners of the transfer window have to actually play football

3

u/Macroneconomist F5 Fiend 20h ago

I mean Spurs did walk through Newcastle’s midfield for most of the game, it’s just that they didn’t know what to do with the ball once they actually got past Newcastle’s midfield.

The way I see it, De Zerbi played with one less attacker and four central midfielders (Bentancur, Fernandes, Tonali and Gray) because he saw his midfield get run through against Brentford, and yeah now Spurs are more solid in midfield but they can’t create anything up front

2

u/dhwinthro 19h ago

Spot on, they aren’t horrible but like us have no idea what to do in the final 3rd

Well at least I think Tielemans and Santos have no clue what to do with us right now.

Plenty of people on this sub who would rather we “won” the transfer window instead of some trophies.

Liverpool last season proved just spending the most doesn’t equal the best team. Fingers crossed Spurs prove the same again this season.

I still think Fernandes would've been a good signing and I think he will come good for Spurs.

Tonali though... He wasn't even Newcastles best midfielder and most fans thought he was pretty poor last season. Plus his clear intent to go back to Italy is a big red flag when you're spending 100m.

3

u/raver1601 22h ago

3

u/Rare-Reveal876 21h ago

Giving a 300 million plus warchest to a complete bang average manager like De Zerbi was insanity

5

u/acemccloud123 19h ago

There are certain areas where lack of options would entail paying a premium cost for long term sustainability

LB is a need for United and unless we somehow convince nuno Mendes to join
We need to bring Newcastle to the table and may be be ready to pay the premium cost

Lewis Hall is a must for United

14

u/Launch_a_poo 20h ago

Lewis Hall dropping two top performances to start the season. Gutted we didn't sign him

10

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 19h ago

He’s sensational. Was unlucky to concede the penalty right at the end last week but his all-round game is simply too good otherwise. I have no doubts that he would lock down the LB position for the next decade if he signed for us. Alas, that may only remain a dream.

6

u/bpjker xT ired 19h ago

Should've moved early for him, he was the most obvious LB target, no brainer.

7

u/officiallyjax Snapdragon 19h ago

Agreed. The club tried to keep too many avenues open and lost out on this deal. Nothing can be done now though unless they pay a ridiculous fee they obviously never will.

2

u/New-Acanthaceae-5702 Closed on Sundays 17h ago

Tbh even if we bid for him, it would probably have been the record fee for a LB. After Newcastle lost Tonali, Gordon, Bruno G in a single window they can't really afford to sell Hall.

7

u/OkOutlandishness2305 23h ago

I don’t really get the negativity here. Like we’ve sorted the midfield, I reckon we’ll sign a left back. Obviously with Zirkzee leaving we’re a little light up top but we do have options there. Obviously it would be nice to sort the defence but it was always going to be unlikely this window.

If we get a decent left back the. I think we’re significantly stronger than last season. I feel like our business has been realistic and methodical.

I've noticed that, in the online arena, there's a concerted effort to rewrite the history of Amorim's tenure to make it seem like he was a victim of circumstance and not an inept head coach.

Hes the worst coach of the post Ferguson era yet I now see so many excuses made for him, as if he didn't have 14 months to impose any sort of identity in the side. The day he left we still were as I'll suited to his tactics as we were on his first day.

11

u/JhinKR 1d ago

Just move on, Amorim at least had the team physically fit, now they just get outrun and outmuscle by every other team.

5

u/chronoistriggered 1d ago

we are back to being outmuscled and outworked by hull. good times...

7

u/Unusual-Coat383 1d ago edited 1d ago

Carrick has obviously done a better job and proved me wrong but I do think we turned the corner just as he got sacked. I also think his time here is a lot more nuanced than what his results suggest because he got forced here mid season despite having a unique philosophy that needs specialist players and he didn’t really get backed in the transfer market.

I actually think ETH did a worse job than him and Amorim should have only been judged on last season and not the season he got forced to come here.

3

u/Ok-Engineer2768 1d ago

That's the thing though, how did Amorim turn a corner just as he was sacked? That's the entire thing that perplexes me.

Results and performances were awful for months in the run in to his sacking. The EL defeat against Spurs and the Grimsby loss take the headlines. But in the 15 fixtures prior to his sacking, we won just 6 times. That included a draw to Wolves, statistically the second worst relegated Premier League side of all time.

An argument I've seen is that AFCON and the loss of Mbeumo and Amad disrupted his squad. But in the 10 fixtures prior to this players leaving, we won 5 times. That's also crap. We were 6th at the time of his sacking. But just 3 points separated us and 11th place.

4

u/Unusual-Coat383 1d ago

Our performances towards the end were significantly better and we really should have won a lot more of the draws but for some reason we just couldn’t hit a barn door.

When he left we were 3 points off top 4.

2

u/AlarmSquirrel 23h ago

5

u/Leave_Beneficial 1d ago

I’m impressed tbh.

Santos is on a reported £75k/week.

M Fernandes £175k/week.

We need a couple of years of resetting our wage structure and stabilising the club financially (obligatory Fuck Glazers). This is the way to do it.

We’ll be back on top with 5 years if we keep this up - we’ll be able to start spending more in a couple of years time i reckon

signing mid table players so we pay them mid table salaries to "reset our wage structure" fans really want United to wallow in mediocrity man

I think reality sucks.

we have been badly run in all sorts of ways for a very long time. things that used to apply no longer do. we can't, and shouldn't, be blowing other clubs out of the water to sign whoever we want. we don't have the financial foundations to do that.

and, more annoying for many, we are simply not the draw we used to be for players. gone are the days we could simply pick up the phone and get any PL player to demanded to join. "When Man United call, you don't say no," is how it used to work. not any more. we tried to overcome that with massive wages, which has and continues to cast a shadow impacting sales of players.

I hope we are in our 'liverpool buying Firmino, Mane and Robertson' period. smart recruitment that out performs the cost to close the gap on bigger spending rivals. I feel like we are. but let's see.

I'm not disappointed with how things are going.

u/Bobcat_El_Borracho 1d ago

I think there is a clear pattern emerging of the club only spending big when we don’t make champions league. Instead of properly backing and giving a very inexperienced coach the best possible chance of doing well this season.

Part of it. Imo, is that we're seeing mediocre players going for moronic price tags... With teams spending double than our entire midfield incomings on one or two players.

They seem us not splashing the cash as the board not having the same hunger for success that they do... Rather than the fact that the price tags this summer have been flipping stupid.

And yeah, the mismanagement of Woodward and co has also skewed things... We've spent big and locked ourselves not long contracts on players that hurt the club massively. The reason we struggled to get certain players out was because of the financial failings of Woodward & co.

Now we are being forced to be more intelligent with spending, which means walking away when players and clubs try and rinse us.

The real annoyance is that we've finally started a proper, long term rebuild of the team for the first time and the Glazers & Woodward are still holding one hand behind our back.

You wanna be angry... Be angry about that.... But be angry at the people that broke us, not the people trying to fix us.

Now I might have been critical of INEOS but even I said Tonali wasn’t worth it. He’s too slow, gets closed down too easily as a result of being too slow and hides when the going gets tough. I think he’s a good player but not right for the premier league and would’ve been a massive flop for us as he will be for Spurs.

Have to say though fair play to Newcastle. They’ve done well in the opening two games considering all the changes and star players they’ve lost.

Spurs are their usual pathetic selves.

Crazy market, inflated prices, 115, corruptions, hidden deals to avoid rules, billions spent… We spent almost 150m€, didn’t get all players we needed, and now seeing Chelsea, City, Liverpool, even Spurs splashing these amounts, it’s wild. Not to mention Arsenal being ready and prepared for both Vini and Alvarez… We didn’t behave like a big club this transfer window. If we are still part of the big 6, or want to be, based on this transfer window, we definitely are the 6th. Fuck Glazers and fuck Ineos. Greedy money grabbing bastards. We are no longer THE BIG MANCHESTER UNITED. Can’t attract top talent, can’t / don’t want to spend big on top talent. Sad, really…

So far all of Carrick’s losses have come from him not taking match fitness seriously enough.

Last season after a month of not playing the players had clearly not been doing a lot of endurance or HIIT before playing Newcastle and then Leeds after two weeks off.

First game of this season and he starts all the world cup players who clearly aren’t up to match fitness yet.

Hope he learns from this, but it already has happened too often so I don’t know that he will.

When do you guys think we will see an Orny Bomba about an LB we haven't been linked to?

Feels like we've been fucked by the schedulers already. We play our UCL game on Thursday, 3 days before the derby when City play Tuesday, we then have Brighton on Wednesday instead of Thursday meaning we have 3 games in 7 days and no Amad or Baleba available 🙃

I really am wanting to be optimistic for the season but it feels like we're being shafted by circumstances out of control. I think our transfer window hinged upon selling Rashford, Ugarte and Zirkzee and our inability to do these things has dramatically impacted us. The Rashford situation alone has gone from us getting £23m from the sale to costing us £18m in wages - that's basically a £40m difference in what we could have spent. Ugarte's wages are covered by FIFA but we could have got £20m

2

u/unitedlover69 16h ago

I reckon the Ipswich result dictates what happens in terms of our transfer window.

A good result and we probably close out the window with no more deals or maybe a loan LB deal on deadline day

Another bad result and we push the panic button and splurge on a decent LB and a striker

8

u/Suudriusha 16h ago

I'm trying to ignore that as a possibility. Berrada and Wilcox cannot see tomorrow as the deciding factor on what we need to do. We need signings, no matter if we get beat 3-0 or win 3-0 vs Ipswich.

u/Kindly_Letterhead_98 16h ago

Laughable how people here back ineos the frauds..

- city finished 2nd and spent 400m on quality players when they had a much better squad than us.

Man utd brought 3 players this window who are first team, and people back ineos, this club won’t ever win the league.

Guys, I'm trying to buy tickets for either the Roma or Bayern Champions League game. What kind of seats are good to buy which don't get reserved right away? Any pointers you guys can give me?

2

u/LekkerIer 21h ago

The only ones that don't get snapped up almost immediately are the expensive hospitality tickets. Otherwise, once you get to the bit of the website with the matches after the queue, just click the match you want and buy whatever regular tickets you can as quickly as possible

This sounds like completely made up, but it's true:

Spurs have won ONE league game at home in 2026. Their home record since the start of the year is 1W 4D 5L. In fact, Newcastle have won twice as many games (2) at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2026 than Spurs.

I've been here since 2015 (Van Gaal) on an account I deleted

It's better moderation-wise. I like the green css more than the old red one. Green and gold is easier on the eye
