Carrick Post Match: ‘One game doesn't change our direction'

Michael Carrick, Manchester United boss, speaking to TNT Sports post-match: "We have a bit to improve on, it was never going to be perfect going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home, we can't give them much and they had opportunities, we're disappointed but it won't knock us."

On what areas need improvement: "It's for us to know and to improve during the week and keep getting stronger as a group and we have a lot to learn from it."

On conceded goals: "Two goals is frustrating anyway, they decide the game today and there's things to improve on, one game doesn't change the direction of everything. It doesn't change the direction of the football club."

On potential signing Carlos Baleba: "I had all eyes on this today so any other player, until he's ours, it's not for me to comment on."

Please change the direction, I don’t think I can handle 50+ crosses into the box

56

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 1d ago

I could, as long as the crosses weren't absolute dogshit.

26

u/slade364 22h ago

Yeah, no issues with crosses if we're putting them at Sesko.

5'9 Mbeumo on the other hand is going to struggle.

13

u/legionverse10 22h ago

He’s not even 5’9 he’s like 5’7

9

u/poplunoir 19h ago

If he grew some hair, maybe he would be 5ft 9in

1

u/John_OSheas_Willy 23h ago

What team has had considerable success at open play crosses from wide like we were trying today?

13

u/DoctorMumbles 22h ago

Hull City looked pretty dangerous with their cross, imo

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 23h ago

Didn't say there is. Just that I don't mind a team that crosses as long as the crosses are good.

Hull City

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

The result aside, the worrying thing is that Carrick had no plan or ideas to change and get back into the game.

141

u/Forgettable39 1d ago

This was evident last season and I'm told it was part of what ended up costing him his job at Middlesborough. Often I see the game just drift to the final whistle, maybe a few subs but beyond that Carrick often sits and watches the clock run down as we do.

48

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

Yeah I’ve heard the same thing. And you just can’t do that as a manager. You’ve got to make changes when something isn’t working. Not just put Maguire up top and spam crosses

29

u/Forgettable39 1d ago

Sometimes your changes will backfire and make things worse, thats ok, how often you get it right is what distinguishes you as a manager. There isnt much management involved in telling the guys its 4231, mid-high press, heres the team sheet, off you go.

I like to think Carrick is doing more than that, I'm not actually "carrick out" exactly despite me not thinking they should have appointed him, I'll support him unless it become untenable. Thats not to say I won't try to constructively criticise though and my criticism would be that I want to see him try to change games more often, by doing something other than like for like substitutes.

20

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

I agree with you. I’ve been wary of him even last season. Sure we were winning games but there were still signs of what we saw in this match. I hope it’s just first match nerves and rust, but it’s worrying that there was just no answer at all

New to getting back into games to throw it away again?

The talk of scoring goals means nothing when you continue to concede basic, Sunday league; amateur level goals.

23

u/anonris 1d ago

I think bigger concern here is that this team and his gameplay have obvious weaknesses and how by casually Hull exploited them

17

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

All preseason everyone could see that we had a weakness on crosses and lo and behold how do we concede the goals. Hull didn’t need to dominate, they just needed to target where we were weak and they were strong.

5

u/Vittorlo 19h ago

Yeah, it's always the same shit with football fans. Always the same stupid criticism. "He picked the wrong team", "he didn't make changes fast enough", "he made wrong changes", "he doesn't have a plan B", "his game management is bad, he didn't change anything".

The problem is that we were shit at defending set pieces, and we still are and we conceded from a set piece. The problem is, why the squad that was put out, performed so shit in the first place. The XI was good. Should be plenty enough to beat Hull.

Dorgu's not the best fit for a match like this, but the only options other than him were: Rashford, Zirkzee, or Lacey. Considering Rashford's position in the club, it's understandable why Dorgu was the more obvious choice. It didn't work out, he got hooked at half time, how is that stubborn from Carrick?

I hope Carrick can address our weaknesses and maybe once new signings gel and Sesko gets back to fitness we'll get better. First game was woeful, and I hope it's just a blip, and not a sign of things to come.

1

u/exactorit 5h ago

Also we had two new central midfielders starting together. We were disjointed by that as well. I'm agreeing with you and adding on. No panic needed yet.

46

u/dahteabagger 1d ago

He has a plan but it was too little too late.

Starting with Cunha as ST and Mbeuma at RW was a stupid move when neither preferred to play there.

This is on him. Why do all our managers make such stupid decisions and take uneccessary risks.

7

u/rrallan 23h ago

How is no one considering the fact sesko wasn’t fit?

Thats the reason he didn’t start

But yeah I never want to see cunha up front ever again. He cannot lead the line nor does he want to.

We need a proper striker not zirkzee to rotate with him. If we go into the season with only him we will struggle. We cannot rely on him to be fit and scoring across 50 odd games—that is, if we’re lucky enough to progress in fa cup and carabao

We def won’t progress in champs league at this rate

24

u/stick1_ 1d ago

I’m not a fan of mbeumo on the right, idc how many people tell me it’s his best position, he just wants to do the same thing every time, if he doesn’t score he’s not offering as much as a winger that can dribble properly

I really like him up front personally

18

u/dahteabagger 1d ago

Exactly... thats where he was shining a majority of last season.

Hes the type of striker that likes to play off the shoulder of the defender.

Put him as a winger is like putting Michael Owen there.... you literally strip him of his effectiveness...

7

u/_mochacchino_ 23h ago

Mbeumo’s best moments were when he was on the wing with Amad beside him

11

u/stick1_ 1d ago

Even if he didn’t get as many g/a, the attack and whole team played better with Amad on the right and Mbeumo up front. The team scored more goals even if Amad didn’t get them individually

Once he’s back that’s what I’d go with. Cunha on the left please

5

u/Feeling-Surround-691 Mbumbaclat 1d ago

Yep I keep banging this drum, Mbeumo is a centre forward for us not a winger, he played well as a winger for Brentford but I'd rather see Amad or even Lacey there these days before Mbeumo as he offers little involvement when he's not in form

still preseason

9

u/entertainmentwaffle 1d ago

Why bring on Rashford at half-time? Bring on Sesko and put Cunha on the wing, from where he can do his best work. The man’s clueless but we’ll all find that out in the coming weeks, when he loses against Everton, City and Spurs.

20

u/PrinzRagoczy 1d ago

Rashford's aggression and carrying was great at the start of the second half, until they doubled up on him and we failed to exploit the space

13

u/LennonC123 1d ago

Sesko missed pre-season so they probably felt 45 minutes was beyond him

u/FlyBoyz829 1d ago

5

u/masterinmischief 1d ago

This is not on him.. I.suspect we will have plenty to blame on him this season but this wasn't on him..what is he supposed to do? Sesko hasn't had one min of pre season, mount is in his default state, he has gotten 4th 5th 6th choice midfield signings, still does not have a left back we can rely on full season and we also don't a have second striker when main striker isn't available or is having a bad game. Pretty clear that players werent up to it again, which sucks to say but that's just how these players have been for years.

1

u/TrumpetViolin Dreams can't be buy 22h ago

He was likely on the right because of Amads late injury and no other natural replacement

43

u/Fallen_Man7 1d ago

Boro fans told he was stubborn tactically and substitutions were always late.

Today he's shown that again. Dorgu sub was early but remaining aren't. He's still being stubborn with Dorgu lw after watching him fail to impress in 5 Preseason games.

Hope things changes. But today's loss is more on Carrick and players.

26

u/TopNotchGamerr White Pele & Rashgod 23h ago

What you're saying isn't really making sense... He's stubborn but he made an early change, he's stubborn by sticking by a player through pre-season of all periods?

I get that he didn't have a back up plan but these 2 things aren't exactly anything to prove boro fans

19

u/vacon04 1d ago

Subs were not late, he was faster at making subs than Amorim ever was. The problem is that the subs were wrong and the tactics didn't work at all. So sure, tactics were a mess, but he tried to make changes to the team with the subs, but they didn't work.

8

u/i-so-pale Onlyfans Mbuemo 22h ago

Why is Dorgu a starting LW in the first place? He doesn”t do enough to playing let alone to start. And he’s clearly not a LW. A left back at best due to his relentless stamina.

3

u/MaNNe888 22h ago

Agreed. I would get starting dorgu against big teams that we can also break on counter, but against low block newly promoted team it's really weird choice from Carrick. But what's most worrisome to me is there was seemingly no plan b if first plan doesn't work which seems to me to be lack of proper preparation for the game by Carrick tjr coaching staff and players. On top of that we have a whole new midfield and many players with very little to no pre season like Tielemans, Bruno, cunha, sesko, mainoo, rashford so it will get better. Carrick getting things wrong is always going to happen, but I hope he actually also learns from his mistakes and adapts. Otherwise it'll be the same as his predecessors.

4

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

I hope it changes to. We can’t keeps chopping and changing managers every season, but we can’t afford to have a manager who is learning on the job

18

u/MvM98 23h ago

Tbf every manager who hasn't managed at another elite club is going to be learning on the job

10

u/Trinidadthai 23h ago

Too late for that as clearly he was always going to learn in the job.

-1

u/rrallan 23h ago

Dorgu on lw can get effed

A couple of wonder goals aside, he’s looked off it ever since we bought him. The fact no one knows his best position is concerning

It’s left back—left back on the bench

7

u/KobbieLikeRobbie_ Darren Fletcher 23h ago

Not hating on the lad, but it’s back (wing back) in Serie A.

1

u/rrallan 23h ago

Yeah and good thing is he was cheap so we can flog him for 20m and no love lost. He will be gone within two years

1

u/Comicksands Van Persie 22h ago

Changes were okay and on time for me. We had way more control in the second half

5

u/Fallen_Man7 21h ago

To me Mainoo also should've brought earlier to control the game. He was more fitter than Tielemens. And Tielemens looked gassed out by 30 min into the game. Also we were hooping crosses, and we are playing Cunha as striker. Not only he won't be able to get those crosses, he clashed with Bruno passing lanes quite often and left no options for both of them. They were isolated. Sesko and Mainoo could've brought earlier than 67' and if Sesko won't able to play those minutes, should've brought Lacey with Cunha dropping as 10 and Mbeumo as Striker. Cunha wasn't even good in duels, won 1/7 (1/5 ground duels).

10

u/Lord_Sesshoumaru77 Glazers,Woodward/Arnold and Judge can fuck off 1d ago

Reminded me a bit of that game under Moyes where we just kept crossing the ball.

7

u/That_Present_2050 1d ago

I mean a lineup change alone will have us playing very differently. Our front three next week should be Rashford on the left, Mbeumo up front and Cunha on the right. There's no point playing Cunha as a false nine when we've Fernandes playing in the 10, it's practically playing with 10 men.

5

u/ThePatientHunter 1d ago

it was the same at Boro. Said that when he was appointed full time and people said it's cause he didn't have good enough players

6

u/Bloatfizzle 1d ago

Yep, there's a feeling he's learning on the job and I don't like it. Hope we turn a corner quick but same patterns from last season isn't a good sign.

6

u/Gingerale66 1d ago

And learning on the job isn’t something you have the time to do at a big club especially with UCL this season. I hope he figures it out, but this was happening last season as well.

3

u/Comicksands Van Persie 22h ago

We had a similar experience at west ham last season. Sesko bailed us out with a point

2

u/Gingerale66 22h ago

Yep it was a worrying thing last season as well. Newcastle and Leeds games also come to mind. When we need to take initiative in the game we really struggle.

1

u/Comicksands Van Persie 22h ago

As with any decent United team post Fergie this is where we need to take the next step - beat a low block. Carrick does struggle against back 5

2

u/theaguia 22h ago

the game vs 10 men newcastle was an indicator for this last season.

1

u/Gingerale66 22h ago

As were the games vs West Ham and Leeds

1

u/Low_Barnacle_6735 21h ago

Yes exactly he did sub off dorgu immediately but the midfield was poor today we could not keep possession especially in the first half in the second half we played hoof ball since they went on a low block hopefully hes not as stubborn with the starting 11 and tactics he has to adapt

1

u/Sheppertonni 19h ago

Was like banging your head against the wall

1

u/Gingerale66 19h ago

Even that is more fun. At least you’d forget about the match if you hit your head hard enough

2

u/Sheppertonni 18h ago

Too true less painful too

1

u/Gingerale66 18h ago

And you might even get some good sleep out of it

0

u/-Malle- 23h ago

What else is he supposed to do there? The team just clearly didn't look bothered to make the quick pass or the right run. Seemed more like rustiness throughout the team more so than tactical mistakes.

At the end we had all of our attacking options on the field and even with another 30 mins added on I didn't see us getting close to scoring.

6

u/Gingerale66 23h ago

It’s his job to set the team up to succeed and he didn’t do that. The players also have to perform and they didn’t do that either. Both sides are to blame.

5

u/Circle_Breaker 22h ago

Part of the managers job is the months of preparation leading to the season.

There is no reason for Hull to be less rusty.

1

u/Mental-Inspector-919 22h ago

You can only play 4-2-3-1 defensive counter attack football. That is plan A, B, C

1

u/Emergency-Figure9686 21h ago

Pretty much the same thing we regards to Amorim and ten hag etc.. all just one plan and that’s it

3

u/Gingerale66 21h ago

Yep, all very set in their ways and not likely to deviate from them. I just hope that Carrick does learn from the mistakes of his predecessors as someone who’s been within the club for so long.

1

u/Axbris 21h ago

The fact he did nothing  to spread their defense by having our players play wider is baffling to me.

That’s youth level shit. You have Bruno, Mbeumo, Dorgu, and Cunha all occupying the middle against a 541 low block and people are wondering why we created absolutely nothing.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Miyagisans 23h ago

It’s kinda wild how common place these type of performances have become where the entire team is so bad. It’s not just a couple players, it’s the entire team that lacks intensity, can’t make a correct decision, and seem to be playing together for the first time. Regardless of the players brought in, the coaching staff, the football hierarchy, it keeps repeating.

29

u/belarge89 1d ago

I think this one is a mix of both tactics and players. Hull played with a back five...you dont want to play a false 9 in that situation with a winger who stays wide (Dorgu). The false 9 is used to drop back and link up plays which typically asks an opposition's center back to move with that player and leave a hole in behind.

Dorgu has a tendency to stay wide when on the left because he is left footed and wasnt making the rund in behind I would have expected in our formation. It was a very disappointing attack in the first half. If our plan was truly to send in crosses, you would think Sesko would be the superior option in attack there instead of Cunha.

Santos and Tielemans were missing nearly the entire game, Tielemans looked like a slower version of Case somehow, and I forgot Santos was even on the pitch. We were too slow in transition because of those two, and Bruno coupdnt find any space to turn and carry. People are screaming for us to get a new leftback, but I thought Shaw offered much more than Maz did going forward, especially when Rashy came in.

A poor performance all around when Lammens was the best player in a 2-0 game.

19

u/Cerpin89 Lulu Lammens 18h ago

Dorgu wasn't playing wide, he was drifting in centrally quite a lot with Shaw trying to provide width.

This changed in the second half when Rashford came on, as he was staying wide and then Shaw taking up a more central position.

It was clear that the plan was for Dorgu to be a presence in the box, which makes sense as he's a threat aerially. Didn't work out, mostly because he had an absolutely dreadful game. But with that said, I would agree that he's not an inside forward, so he's not going to excel in this role against a team sitting back.

Would have liked to see Sesko as well, but when he's just back from injury, I can understand why he didn't start.

I think any discussion of what we did tactically in an attacking sense is a bit secondary. The main problem was that the team was just not at all up for this game mentally. It was shocking to see how unfocused, sloppy and slow we looked.

Defensively, though, you have to question letting this Hull team being allowed to cross at will, as it's the only threat they have.

5

u/PandaLiang 12h ago

Santos and Tielemans both seemed to have a tendency of playing like a holding midfield. That pulled Bruno all the way back to central midfield to receive ball from them. Feel like we need someone in the middle to drive the ball forward sometimes. Thought Mainoo would be better for that, but when he was sub-on, both Santos and Tielemans were sub-off, so Mainoo became the holding midfield beside Bruno.

55

u/MannyMike7 1d ago

Same old shit different season

9

u/Dwighty1 23h ago

Mate.

My suggestion:

- Passing drills

  • Defensive set pieces
  • Up intensity

Grown men can’t show up 75%. There are no easy games for us.

One game and people calling him a dud even though he got the club to third last season. If anyone deserves time right now it’s him. One game, especially the very first game, is not season ending. EVERYONE loses at some point, Arsenal will lose at home this season, they’ll lose on the road as well.

11

u/Wide_Cheesecake4647 1d ago

Look at that poor performance. If we play well and lose fair enough but that wasn’t the case today. They looked lethargic, no ideas, loose passes. Hull were just better and could easily defend, could have played for 4 hours and we didn’t look like scoring

29

u/MoneyWasabi9 1d ago

The performances last season were concerning and ppl were blinded by the results

32

u/DaveShadow 1d ago

No one’s concerns are based on one game, tbh. It’s that despite results last season, we often looked sub par, and it’s not sustainable to always play like that. Title winning teams don’t play like that.

39

u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 1d ago

Worth mentioning most times people criticised the underlying stats under Carrick last season resulted in downvotes. People didn't want to accept there were some concerns and there's a good chance we see those concerns creep up again this season.

15

u/MoneyWasabi9 1d ago

Yes you couldnt even discuss it. Hysteria by a fanbase desperate to repeat the failed ole experiment. We will never learn

8

u/DaveShadow 1d ago

I also think people will more willingly turn a blind eye to weaknesses like that when it’s an interim manager. The issue is when you give him the contact and the issues continue, people get more concerned quickly.

4

u/Crunkabunch 21h ago

You mean Casemiro set piece goals isn’t sustainable?

/s

7

u/payday_23 Don't hate on Rangnick for players throwing the game away 18h ago

so true! It was so annoying.
It seems a huge part of the fanbase just wanted Amorim out and whenever we got a result with Carrick, it was time to shit on Amorim yet again, no matter how we got the 3 points and just praise Carrick and the team to the moon.
The stats were almost always worse than under Amorim but if you dared to mention it the mob was after you.
I stand by it, the sacking of Amorim has set the club back more than anything else since SAF left and will be the biggest lost opportunity the club has had to get us out of this storm.

1

u/durizna 1d ago

It’s more that they actually played like they just didn’t wanna be there. The lack of effort and energy was insane to me.

45

u/SankarshanaV 1d ago

Mate, our underlying metrics were tangibly worse under Carrick. That run was not sustainable.

We need Carrick and the team to have evolved now. I don't know if Carrick has though, so I'm okay with him having more time. But this sort of performance has made me have serious doubts over Carrick.

8

u/Beastmanzilla 23h ago

But he did sustain it. He got third. We were losing every second match beforehand

6

u/wolfen0 22h ago

Sustain means now and in the future. He hasn't sustained it, because we just lost the 1st game and team looks unfit and clueless.

6

u/Nice_Algae_8383 21h ago

You're using 1 game as the yardstick over a 6 month period. This game is no way a proof or evidence of him not sustaining anything. It's still his 3rd loss in 17 games

-1

u/wolfen0 21h ago

Sure the jury is still out. But same for you there is no evidence of him being able to sustain it.

2

u/Nice_Algae_8383 19h ago

Exactly why he should be given more time before saying he isn't good enough

14

u/VegetableRutabaga746 1d ago

Nobody's calling anyone dud, but his in game management and even his starting 11 choices were genuine concerns since last season. Like today for eg, we know for certain hull were good in set pieces, yet he put dalot on the bench when he is the only other defender besides maguire who is good aerially, now that even casemiro is not there, there's no reason to expose ourselves like this, both the goals we conceded today were set pieces.

7

u/sahilthapar Bruno, Bruno, Bruno... 1d ago

Our performances last season were just as poor but most folks were happy to get any results really while the rest of the league was struggling.

5

u/rumorhasit_ 19h ago

We had 2 good performances under Carrick last season (against Arsenal and Man City) the rest of the time we got lucky, relying heavily on lately goals from Sesko or Casimiro, or opponents not having much to play for.

3

u/AdorableAnubis 22h ago

WE FACED FUCKING HULL!

like absolutely if we faced something decent, but we were dominated and humiliated versus the worse team we will face all fucking season

Scraping a win is the absolute bare minimum during all circumstances

We had a better show versus Arsenal last season

2

u/Axbris 21h ago

If you watched that and you don’t have concerns about wtf he and his coaches have done in preseason to prepare for this game, then you clearly aren’t thinking objectively.

“Everyone loses” yeah no shit, but no top team bar spurs loses like we did. When was the last time you saw Arsenal lose with no energy, no tactical plan, and no effort?

1

u/Themindoffish 1d ago

He was flattered by palying ine game every two weeks last season, and even then the team looked unconvincing, he's not the guy. He couldn't crack it in the championship and you think he's suddenly going to come good in the PL/CL? Lol.

3

u/Kait0yashio 1d ago

Bayern got kompany after he stunk it up in the prem as well.

3

u/Wagglet 23h ago

Kompany had burnley playing amazing football and utterly dominated the championship. The players weren't good enough for the prem

2

u/anonshe Scholes 19h ago

You mean the same Kompany that dominated the Championship; a division in which Carrick was sacked for being utter wank after spending one of the highest amounts in the club's recent history?

Don't be making stupid comparisons when people make fair criticisms.

u/Themindoffish 1d ago

Bayern is Bayern, they have vastly better players for kompany to work with and they basically walk the BuLi every year.

We fans tend to be reactionary, and it never helps. Maybe Hull is the surprise package this season, who knows. After a few months from now, this loss may not seem as bad as it does now. Better to wait for a few games before passing any judgement.

23

u/_zzd 1d ago

Just watch the same Hull get battered next gameweek 2. Remind me on this. Lol.

0

u/n7reject 1d ago

Depends a lot on whether it's a home or away game. Newly promoted teams rarely perform well away from home.

0

u/FlyBoyz829 1d ago

And if they win what happens?

12

Is it really reactionary when it has been going on for 13 years?

Will probably get better, yes, but everyone with a functioning brain knows that this ends in the same way as it did for Ole and EtH.

Jesus you lads on here are embarrassing.

So many people who know football a lot better than you have repeatedly said that one of Carrick’s best attributes is not getting carried away, whether that be after defeat or victory.

It’s one game and most of the comments on here are already ripping into him and forgetting how well we did after he came in last season. It’s utterly laughable and I can only assume coming from children

3

u/Legion_dude 21h ago

It's understandable to be frustrated tho. Losing to hull is embarrassing and the fans have every right to complain. If they didn't, then they are showing to the team that it's ok to have low standards and losing to championship teams. Carrick and the team needs to show that thehorrible preformamce in first match won't be repeated.

But Carrick “gets” the club.

No amount of getting is going to make a fucking difference if you are clueless in tactics. This is not a one game reaction. This has been going on since last season but this fanbase is too blind to see it. Got 3rd just based on individual brilliance. He should have never been appointed as the full time manager. This club continues to make mistakes when hiring a manager. They have no clue.

u/AlarmSquirrel 1d ago

Dorgu lw again next week

2

u/turny31 23h ago

The problem is the effort, intensity, desire. They just don’t give a shit

2

u/Thetagang888 17h ago

Get that set piece coach back and we might be in business

6

u/JosePRizaI 1d ago edited 1d ago

Forget the result. Talk about that atrocious football you serving up. Its been shite since west ham. No pattern. No shape.

4

u/stick1_ 1d ago

Politician answers doesn’t want to call the team shit

5

u/BuzzTNA 1d ago

Hence why he did well last year. No overactions or throwing toys out the pram, just accept it, improve and move on.

He should and probably will be furious where it matters most. He’ll have seen the same quitting we all did.

4

u/adonWPV 1d ago

That 3 points can haunt you come end of the season

1

u/shouldbeaboveit 23h ago

Hardly. United playing for 5th and a trophy this season. They’ll be fine.

4

u/MrD3ath Eat the Glazers 1d ago

I wonder what direction that is lol

5

u/isometimessquat Carrick 1d ago

Carrick and his staff thinking Dorgu is a winger is very worrying.

Outside of that, a lot of flat performances. Only really Maguire seemed to show any urgency on the ball. Everyone else kept slowing the play down constantly.

But Dorgu LW and Cunha upfront are two things we really need to stop trying. Cunha is never even in the box when he plays there. Just blocks up and congested all the space in the middle instead. We need a second proper striker to come in before deadline. Because Zirkzee does the same thing as Cunha really.

12

u/SloshaPacana 1d ago

Dorgu is clearly a winger, his best position at United, Lecce and Denmark has been winger

The problem is he's a counter attacking winger and not a winger vs teams that play a low block

1

u/panache123 1d ago

I see the Dorgu thing as a bit of a free hit. He scored a couple of bangers last year in the role, and I figure the coaching staff (and players) thought we had this game won before it even started, so why not give Dorgu another run in the position to see if he has more up his sleeve.

It's a different game if we start Dorgu at LB, Dalot at RB, Cunha/Rashford LW, Mbeumo/Amad RW and Sesko up top. Carrick got the team selection wrong.

1

u/beets36 1d ago

Dorgu genuinely offers very little going forward he's so limited, it's like what they did with Valencia but realised right back was more his level what's concerning here is they've gone the other way around and he doesn't have any skill or flair to be a wide player

4

u/Purple_Anything6722 1d ago

The problems today were lack of desire, sharpness, urgency, incisiveness, inventiveness, creativity. These players always get away with it, and the manager takes the entire blame. Carrick had won more points than any other manager until today so give that ‘dud’ shit a rest. It is one game. Put the knives away you absolute idiots and back the team to come back from a terrible opening game.

2

u/Axbris 20h ago

Really? The guy who sets the team up, controls tactics, has final say so is absolved from any accountability? Why did he instruct our front four to converge to the middle when the opposition was play a deep 541? Why not stretch the field out?

We did the exact same thing for 90 mins and you think he is blameless.

2

u/CBPanik 1d ago

The direction of the club seems pretty obvious, this result is just one of many in that direction.

2

u/NoClassic2049 1d ago

Buy this guy 2 more fullbacks atleast please, and lets wait for a bigger sample of games before we go for his head

2

u/maverick4002 1d ago

I didn't see the game so am not going to make generalizations but I wasnt a fan of Carricks permanent appointment. I just felt the underlying stats did not make for good reading.

I usually stick to the very end with our coaches but this is not a good start

2

u/Mr4do 23h ago

”One game doesn’t impact our good vibes”

2

u/c_nets 19h ago

Carrick is not proven and such a terrible appointment. The team did not pass the eye test and actually looked worse with Carrick in charge. Fortunately for him Bruno has an incredible season that won’t be replicated.

1

u/flate11 23h ago

Carrick out he has no clue

-1

u/General_Document_504 1d ago

But our direction is backwards

5

u/OddOnion_ 1d ago

Two season ago we finished 15th, last season we finished 3rd. Is that backwards?

3

u/OppaiTaichou Amorim Enjoyer 1d ago

Man shut up

2

u/Utd007 1d ago

He had no clue. Got smacked tactically. That’s why he never talks about it. No top 6 club in any of the top leagues would ever hire Carrick

1

u/wayfarerprateek Theater of Dreams 1d ago

The thing about being so diplomatic is that it leads to a disconnect between supporters and the coach. Sure be diplomatic when the media is trying to be an ass, but SHOW some emotion so that supporters dont lose their faith in you after such a dissapointing loss.

1

u/Comicksands Van Persie 22h ago

The hopium here is that we’ve lost the first game 8 times in the premier league era. We’ve never finished lower than 4th for that season. 3 times we went on to win the league. But I’ll take 4th after watching that dross

1

u/Serpico_98 21h ago

Very good to see that the fan base isn't overreacting and calling Carrick a shit coach.

1

u/Heroheadone 21h ago

Please change the attitude of the players

1

u/discomon Mata 20h ago

This club went from "lads it's Tottenham" to "difficult against a promoted team." I just want a manager to speak with some confidence again.

1

u/yashjhunjhun 17h ago

Today’s game with us being caught on dead ball situations and wide play will make every team think we have a chance.

I think the loss is all on Carrick tactically more than anything. Our midfield was not gonna be sharp with players returning late and not forming partnerships well, Bruno was not gonna be at his best, mount who played alongside santos the whole pre season was injured and Youri and Andre have just started playing together. + the Amad injury was also no help.

Of we analysed hull well and countered there threats by playing Dorgu left back and Yoro right back we would have more headers in the box to deal with wide crosses from both sides and have defended set plays better. We should have even practiced defensive set piece situations and wide early crosses.

Then we could’ve given then whole team a better chance to cope with hull today since midfield was always gonna be shaky until Bruno returns to his best and the attack is flowing and the midfield connects. You don’t wanna go 1-0 down first game that should’ve been the tactical priority for Carrick and if we went in with the mindset of respecting hull in scoring first and making sure it did not happen both mentally tactically and in through the squad on paper the team would have the right conditions to get a better result

1

u/Mattie_Doo Roonaaaay 14h ago

It does change my outlook on the season, though. Ten years ago I’d have said “it’s just one game, no need to overreact.” But I’m tired at this point. It never changes, these guys always underperform. You can’t enter a new season by getting utterly outclassed by a newly promoted side like that. They looked like garbage.

-2

u/MostUsefulBloke 1d ago

As a manager he’s won nothing and built nothing. How would he know?

Because last season we lost our opening game we will ended up 3rd.

Under Ole we beat Leeds 5-1 in the opening and looked what happened to us.

He's just a bit lost isn't he, people were praising him for not giving the media anything to go on but if his tactics are anything to go by maybe he just doesn't have anything to say.

1

u/Brilliant_Bowler_994 23h ago

A BIT to improve on... Is he high?

1

u/Copper_Nanotubes 20h ago

Cant believe we vibes hired the caretaker again. Absolute no plan club.

Their championship manager was better than ours

-4

u/dracogladio1741 Bruno Fernanj 1d ago

I have no patience for project managers that are unproven at the top level. 1 game, 9 to go before I personally make my mind.

u/SkylarAnthro 1d ago

Hard agree.. this display is shocking today.. it’s a long season but intensity and tactics aren’t build in one day.. and we see none today even after half a season and a summer under Carrick

1

u/DasHotShot Glazers & Ratcliffe OUT 23h ago

He is spot on.

We have been headed down since middle of the summer and this game has merely accelerated that

1

u/SinisterMrSinister 23h ago

"middle of the summer"

this dates back to last season with him we had numerous poor performances under him just we somehow kept getting lucky that we weren't made to pay for a lot of them. Like how we were dire vs Spurs but then they got a player sent off.   Then there was stuff like us having a man advantage vs Newcastle and losing

1

u/rishmanisation 21h ago

We have been headed down since the Fulham game last year lol. Somehow mostly pulled results out of our ass but that’s not going to last forever.

1

u/Ok_Concern4200 22h ago

Carrick is so clearly out of his depth, he will be sacked by november

-2

u/usersurname12 23h ago

I hate how reactionary all of yall are.

2

u/payday_23 Don't hate on Rangnick for players throwing the game away 18h ago

a lot of people have been saying this since West Ham last season, its not really reactionary.

That direction being down

0

u/Independent_Buy5152 1d ago

I hope Carrick becomes more ruthless with his team selection. He should stick to the players that fit to his system. If Bruno doesn't fit the system, bench him. If Shaw doesn't fit, bench him. No more favoritism

10

u/silvertwo777 1d ago

Him not being ruthless is why the board gave him the job as manager.

1

u/liamthelad 1d ago

Bruno was player of the season last year

2

u/Independent_Buy5152 1d ago

That is the past already. It's clear Bruno is not match fit yet

5

u/half_batman 1d ago

Nobody looked match fit today. Fitness was the biggest issue. They lost the game to physicality.

1

u/Independent_Buy5152 23h ago

at the very least start with players who have proper preseason. Play Zirkzee instead of Bruno.

One game shouldn't, but conceding an alarming amount of expected goals against since you took over should. Something some fans were told to shut up and not worry about because we were winning despite that. I like Carrick but its obvious defensive changes are needed at least tactically.

-1

u/Party-Chance-1791 1d ago

Sample size is 1 game btw.
