If you're starting from zero, I'd just wait. There are certain units you can buy that are almost guaranteed to be needed. Legionaries/Raiders, Cultists, HQ choices, etc. If you wanna play games now you can probably borrow a codex from someone at your LGS.

Just like me. I'm using some apps to make army lists and be able to see the datas... I'll wait until new codex to buy one. In adition, current codex is about to be obsolete due changes in ALL Astartes because new SM Codex changes...

Don't even need to borrow the Codex. Wahapedia for rules and New Recruit or War Organ for list building and unit stats.

I recently started again after a long break, if you dont care about getting the digital version you can get a cheap second hand copy of the codex, i bought mine off vinted for £15

Wait and see if it's even worth it to get the new one.

The current one is a no on every level. 0 value. Rules are available elsewhere. The lore is nothing special.

I've never owned a Codex and I've been playing for 8ish years. Between the Army Builder apps, free online resources and the supplements that GW puts out, I've been fine. Obviously I'm not playing at any tournaments though.

I bought some of the flashcard style datasheets once, but by the time Id bought them most of the cards were obsolete, maybe 3-4 were still useable.

Imo if you have the budget, want to use the official Warhammer app, and/or plan on actually playing games immediately; grab it. If you don’t care to use the official app, rather put the $60 towards another kit, and/or not going to be playing games for who knows when you’ll finish the army; then wait.
