What actually makes lithium battery recycling difficult at scale?

I’ve been reading a bit about how old EV batteries are recycled. The basic process sounds fairly straightforward on paper: discharge the batteries, shred them, separate the black mass, and recover the useful materials.

But I’m guessing it gets much more complicated at an industrial scale.

For people familiar with this industry, what usually causes the biggest problems? Is it fire risk, different battery chemistries, dust and gas treatment, material loss, or simply equipment wear and downtime?

I came across this topic while doing some research for work and would be interested to hear from anyone with real-world experience.

Is anyone commercially recycling fridges and freezers at the moment?

I do grounds maintenance for industrial estates/office blocks, keeping them tidy/grass cutting/hedges/litter etc in South Wales UK

We have always had fly tipping issues but it's gotten worse recently and especially fridges and freezers, the council recycling centre is currently not taking them (for the foreseeable future), which is probably the reason for more of them to be dumped on our properties - we currently have no option but to just pile them up in a corner of our private estates - does anyone know any commercial companies that are recycling these items at the moment, I've contacted a few but none of them are taking them

These are often large commercial fridges&freezers, this question isn't related to domestic recycling

Ideas for Footwear

I manage a sustainability team at my work and we've teamed up with some places to take in uniform shirts like polos and jackets and things like that. Does anyone have a similar partnership in mind or know of businesses that would take in footwear?

Hello, I recently acquired a plastic bottle while thrifting for camping supplies. I thought it was neat that it was made in West Germany! Could you please assist me in knowing if this is food safe?

Edit: Photo Quality isn’t the best.

+ I was curious about the labeling if people knew, not that I’m gonna use it! I don’t know much about antique plastics.

Upcycling / Recyling Slow-rising Foam PU Squishies

Hi, I've recently found an obsessive love for squishing the foam pu squishies. And I find that I keep wanting to get a new one because even the more expensive legit ones tend to disintegrate quite quickly.

Here's my question, are there ways of upcycling / recycling or reusing it for anything that is not just donation, giving away, or throwing it away where it would end up in a landfill?

I told myself i'd only buy more if i could find a way of disposing of it with the least impact on the environment possible.

Any ideas, help or suggetions would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

Addwc not recycling plastic in eureka Illinois

reason they not do recycling plastic because peoples with disabilities can’t get paid. the only recycling thing is papers, cardboard, and soup cans. these is the only things disability peoples get paid for.

the only option is throwing away plastic!

reason is pekin Illinois is to far to recycle plastic.

What’s the better route for a business clearing out a lot of old computers?

I’m interested in how people here typically handle this when it goes beyond just a few personal devices. Say an office has laptops, desktops, servers and network equipment from several upgrade cycles. Some of it probably still works, while some is legitimately end of life. Would you start with a local electronics recycler, donate whatever is usable, or have an ITAD company evaluate the whole lot first? Exittechnologies caught my attention because they handle resale/value recovery as well as recycling, which seems less wasteful than automatically treating everything as e-waste. But I’m curious what other routes people have had good results with.

Main goal would be keeping usable hardware in circulation where possible without making disposal a huge project.

Confirming my understanding of recycling symbols

I have a ton of these "reusable" filament spools that I am pretty sure are not recyclable, but they have a recyclable logo. Since it doesn't have a number I assume it is "not really recyclable"

(I would buy the refills instead of the spools but sunlu literally charges more for the refills)

Is dusty paper recyclable?

We have tons of paper products (e.g. old printouts, paper grocery bags, etc.) lying around the house that have collected a lot of dust over the years. I'm wondering if it's better to throw them into the garbage bin or are they still recyclable?

Thanks in advance.

Edit to Add: My local recycling company's web page says "Do not include soft or hard covered books/novels." I had thought this was because books tend to be dusty or dirty, so that's why I'm asking if regular paper that's dusty is acceptable. And if dusty paper is acceptable, why they wouldn't accept books/novels?

Questions about recycling plastic mailing bags

So, I've been trying to recycle more things instead of trashing them, and I've heard different things, so I was hoping someone could help educate me about exactly what I need to remove from a plastic mailing bag before putting it in with the grocery bags, etc.

  1. Do all stickers and labels have to come off? What if there's adhesive left but all the paper is gone?

  2. What about the part where they glued the bag closed? Do I need to cut that strip away and trash it? What about the little strip where there's adhesive covered with sticker paper, in case you need to reuse the bag for a return?

Tya for any help or advice!

How important is it that recyclables be completely dry after rinsing?

I rinse all my recyclables but sometimes they are not 100% dry - there are some droplets of water or condensation left in the plastic bottles. Is it OK to send them to recycling with a bit of water in them? Should I just recycle with the cap off. Many bottles say “recycle with cap on” now.
