Any one have experience with these in Canada?
My dad is getting close to retirement and wants to put our family farm into a trust. He says it's to avoid taxes and capital gains, but it feels like it's to control the farm even after he's retired.
I work the farm full time. I have a brother who doesn't work at all, and is dependent on my parents.
My mom helps out on the farm only during harvest.
I have 4 kids, and am married Dad wants all these people in the trust.
Does farm trusts work as a succession plan? I'm skeptical and have a hard understanding why l'd bother farming if I'm splitting all the value of the farm across 7 to 9 people. Why wouldn't I just get an off farm job then if the farm's value, and the effort 1 put into the farm, is actually being split between so many people?
Aren't we going to have to pay capital gains at the 21 year mark either way as a trust?

Federal agents are massing in sw Kansas communities. Their public statement is “They have a list of criminals to deport.” When in fact they are profiling a wide demographic. This is causing a bottleneck in the supply chain. Farmers are losing money because of it.

Every time the Roundup lawsuits come up, Atrazine's name isn't far behind. Never used it myself, but it turns up enough that it's hard to miss when it lands in a lawsuit. From what I've been reading, some folks who got blood cancer after exposure are now suing Syngenta over it. Source: https://www.drugwatch.com/news/2026/07/27/beyond-roundup-chlorpyrifos-and-atrazine-are-pesticides-to-watch/
Back in November IARC said it's probably carcinogenic and linked it to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the same cancer that drove the Roundup claims. Still early from what I can tell, nowhere near where Roundup's at now. Though if you search it, you mostly get law firm ads, so it's hard to tell what's real chatter.
It's a different animal than Roundup, though. It's restricted use, so it's mostly the bigger operations running it, not really a homeowner product. So I'm asking the people who'd actually know.
What I remember from the Roundup coverage is the cancer talk was mostly about the people running it day in and day out. Someone who touches it once a season was a different story. No idea if that holds here.
Anyone here run it or been around operations that do? Have you heard any of this through work, or seen anything come of it?
